Ah! This was edited as I posted my first reply... no probs, but ... the 'palaces' are maintained for the state as are many other properties. They have to be maintained, looked after. They are part of the heritage that we can all enjoy :cool: You say they applied? but did they receive the grant and how much was it? ... I'm not actually a royalist per se! but I do believe it's up to the country to look after it's historical structures, gardens or whatever :)

Name some things they pay for, you know, travel,food, holidays,that sort of thing......

Remember, until 1993 they didn't even pay tax, they had to be shamed into doing that

If that's true? then so what? .... 62p a year to pay for the Royal family is a damn site better value than paying for the rest of the ****** (!) .... The Royal family generate billions of revenue for the country ...... money well spent IMHO ;)
 
They'll have to get the invites out soon, or all the foreign bigwigs royals and celebs will be booked up and not able too attend.

* B Marine estate – 46.6

Now what was that about a tiny £38.2 million?

One minor point, that's the money the property, which belongs to the nation, made, not what the Windsors contributed to the economy...;)

Those may be the Revenue figures, but is that the profit, and besides I daresay that involved a good few people who are probably glad that they are employed by the Estates.

I think you'll find that most of their holidays, other than those at royal residences, are paid for by their hosts, yet when the Middletons stayed at on of Charles' properties he sent them a bill for £3k....

So, they pay tax ....... Sounds to me like they are contributing quite a lot then? ;)

Nope, that is the revenue from the Crown Estate which belongs to HMQ, but from which the income is passed over to the Treasury in exchange for the Civil List, under an agreement between Parliament and George III and it's confirmed at each Accession. Legally Prince Charles could tell Parliament and the Treasury to poke it when he becomes king.

:lol: If their hosts pay for their holidays .... so what? ..... Do you think they'll be going to Tenerife for a couple of weeks and staying in a hotel after booking it at Thomas Cooke travel :shrug: ...... If I have guests, I don't charge them :shrug: ... not that they'd pay anyway :D

Somehow I doubt Prince Charles or her Maj. puts in a bill for washing their smalls? ...... :D

Well I for one will be there, trying to take better shots than I did when his Mum got married. (And I hope I can still be there when he gets crowned).

Its a funny thing. In other respects I'd be proud if you'd call me a Republican, but when it comes to OUR Royal family I'm a total head held high, chest puffed out ROYALIST! Don't forget that ever since we chopped off the head of a certain King and got Magna Carta signed, they only SERVE with our consent. And serve they do very well usually in my opinion.

If you ever get to meet them and even better chat with them, then I think you'd find most of them "Jolly fine folk". The Queen in particular has the remarkable ability, just like her Mum, to instantly put one at ease when conversing with. Very different to the few seconds sound bites and clips you find in the "Meeeeja".

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that there would be an end to the monarchy, more that his mother doesn't seem too keen to relinquish power to Charles and going by how long-lived his maternal grandmother was there's a fair chance he won't get his turn...
 
Just my opinion but all this kings and queens malarky is medieval nonsense. This is the 21st century and we need to stop living in the past.

At least we don't have to splash out a pile of cash supporting the whole of their extended family. And we get to choose who we want, rather than having some gormless prat who had to get somebody else to pass his A levels for him imposed on us.

You realise that's just a drop in the ocean compared to what they actually bring into the country?

I read that this wedding alone is going to boost the economy by over a billion through tourism etc

Don't think i'd want to take up valuable space on my memory card,....£80m for a wedding at the taxpayers expense is a damned disgrace when you look at all the cutbacks that have just been announced.

What is disgusting is £16 million compensation (gag money) to 14 so called victims of torture! .... What's the problem? this Country has loads of money! Jeez it can even bail out the Irish banks ..... :shake:

Just a thought, as William is a helo pilot why not hold the wedding on one of those aircraft carriers we have with no planes on them? there is cattering staff already there (ships cooks) and the captain can marry them.
It would cost b****r all really, a tank of gas for the chopper, the ex royal yacht britannia could bring out the families (with tourists footing the cost) it would be a lot cheaper than closing half of London and getting police in from everywhere to line the route.
