43 dogs dead and current reports are saying the place has been destroyed. Even worse, it looks like it might have been arson, the police have a teenager under arrest on suspicion of arson. As a northern lass originally, MDH was the Battersea of the north to us, it has been around as long as I can remember and this is heartbreaking - I think even non-dog people would not wish this on a rescue centre. If there is a silver lining to this cloud, it is the response of the public, over a hundred turned up at the centre very quickly to help ferry surviving dogs to other centres and foster homes, provide blankets, towels, etc and anything else they could do to help. 2 guys even kicked in doors to kennels to get dogs out as the flames raged. I despair of the sort of person that could do something like this, but the response from everyone else has been unbelievable and heart warming. Thanks to social media, and the last time I checked across 2 justgiving pages, almost £70K has been raised this evening to help the home after this fire. I hope they can recover and rebuild.
