43 dogs dead and current reports are saying the place has been destroyed. Even worse, it looks like it might have been arson, the police have a teenager under arrest on suspicion of arson. As a northern lass originally, MDH was the Battersea of the north to us, it has been around as long as I can remember and this is heartbreaking - I think even non-dog people would not wish this on a rescue centre. If there is a silver lining to this cloud, it is the response of the public, over a hundred turned up at the centre very quickly to help ferry surviving dogs to other centres and foster homes, provide blankets, towels, etc and anything else they could do to help. 2 guys even kicked in doors to kennels to get dogs out as the flames raged. I despair of the sort of person that could do something like this, but the response from everyone else has been unbelievable and heart warming. Thanks to social media, and the last time I checked across 2 justgiving pages, almost £70K has been raised this evening to help the home after this fire. I hope they can recover and rebuild.

Terrible

I've been following this over the course of the evening.

How can anyone do that ??

Yes the guy who did it needs help - and he needs to learn just how severe is the suffering that he has caused. Those poor dogs .

It's really sick

at the very least make him deal with the remains of the burned animals. that should make it hit home (unless theres something seriously disturbed about him).

disgraceful though.

I hadn't heard about his until I saw it metioned on FB . . . just completely lost for words.
If suspicions about arson are correct, that is one of the sickest most twisted things I can imagine anyone doing.
Absolutely heartbreaking thinking about what those dogs' last moments.

If it was arson (which would seem probable) I think the seriously disturbed bit goes without saying, TBH Neil.

I can think of no motive for targeting an animal shelter other than it just beng 'for the fun of it'.
And if it was the kid that they've arrested, the speed with which they've found him would suggest that he stayed around to watch the outcome, or at least was still in the vicinity when people started arriving at the scene.

All speculation of course.

well yeah probably. we've all done stupid things as kids though (me and some friends nearly set fire to an entire oak tree once), but some just seem to make stupid decisions about where the line is.

like you say speculation but whos to say the kid didnt just set fire to a wheelie bin and it got out of hand.

still, stupid thing to do.

He is still being questioned, but there are some reports that his family were turned down for a dog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, its all very sad,, but the response by the public does go someway to restoring my faith in human nature, just hope that they are back up and running as soon as humanly possible,,, because sadly dogs needing space never ends

60 animals now confirmed as losing their lives in this and wouldn't be surprised if that increases over the next day or two. Rumours will abound about what exactly happened and why, but until we have a proper official reports, it is hard to say what kind of person would consider this a normal action. As Neil says, it could be some kid that set fire to wheely bin without thinking through the consequences [who did at 14?], all the way up to a full blown, 24 carat nutter. I guess it's anything in between those two that makes you worry about the contents of the gene pool.

Blimey!! :banghead:

I was actually quite heartened that the GMP last night asked that they be left to continue their investigations and that local people shouldn't take the law into their own hands. I'm quite happy with that level of vengeful emotion! I'm nearly as happy with that as I am impressed by the two local guys who kicked open cage doors and rescued dogs!

Poor dogs. I am often quite cold to what humans can do to each other but a big softy whenever it's a defenceless animal. Hopefully they are insured and the money raised will be added to the pot for future dogs.

Whether accidental or deliberate its a terrible thing to happen.

Years ago I (as part of a team) had to clean up a house following a minor fire,
and that included removing just one dead dog.
It wasn't pretty and I still remember it vividly to this day.
It must have been horrific for those having to "clean up"
the aftermath of 50+ :(

I hope that justice is done and that the centre gets back on its feet before too long :)

I am more saddened by the acts by what humans do to each other than what is done to animals. A human life, to me, is infinately more important than an animals one, in my view. Whilst I hope the arsonists are caught for this nasty, senseless crime I'd feel more strongly about it if there were 41 people that died.

Do you think £700K would be donated if it was a homeless shelter that burned down?

dunno, lets hope we don't find out. But I would wager the news coverage would be far more

Depends if 60 helpless residents had perished inside.

Lets say they had. Ok, not on the same scale, I know of an arson attack with 3 people died, including children. How much charity did they, the rest of the family got. I will tell you. Nothing.

I find it shameful people are more empathetic for the plight of animals than people.

Yes, we know you do.
Just let people be saddened and move along

so lets conveniently forget how much money has been donated by the people of this country alone to human suffering in Gaza, or to events like comic relief and children in need, or perhaps the recent ice bucket challenge stuff....

'Statistics' can be made to say what is convenient, never ever forget that when reading such articles...

That means 60% of homeless people aren't junkies. Free's up money for the more deserving 60%.

Shooting in the face sounds about right!!!!

I've been pondering what to post in response to you and have come to the conclusion that there's no point as you appear to be too narrow minded to understand. The fact that someone who believes drug addicts should be shot in the face is lecturing others about empathy is mind boggling.

From what I can tell, your answer to anything which you fear or do not understand is to destroy it.

People cannot help being disabled, people can help becoming junkies. I find it amusing you say there is no point responding me, yet somehow, you manage to...

I find it mind boggling people can empathize to animals more than people - maybe because they match their IQ so can relate to them better. I don't know, but I am disgusted by it.

Do you have any concept of exactly how insulting to a whole lot of people that actually is, never mind the member you have quoted. That steps perilously quote to a suspension Steve, I suggest, as a moderator, you wind you neck in and think about what you are saying before hitting the reply button.

Ah, so if people make the wrong choices in life they deserve to be shot in the face? lad we got that sorted then

Oh, and I said there was no point in the response I was pondering. Try reading my whole post rather than cherry picking. ;)

Didn't you say there was no point in replying, yet you did. Anyway. I believe junkies to be a major problem and issue. Just think what we could do for the 60% who are homeless not through drugs but other issues.

I believe whole heartedly in the death penalty, wrong choices being murder, rape, pedophilia etc but hey, that is just me.

No, I didn't.
