So much hatred for new wedding photographers??

Could you actually be any more patronising and condescending? I'm all for honest answers, what I am against is "professionals" making snide comments (see above) and harsh critique when upon examination of their work they are hardly in a position to pass comments. This happens a lot on here which is why (and many others) packed in posting shortly after joining.

As it happens if the definition of professional is someone whose income is derived from photography then I sadly would be classed as one - I feel uneasy referring to myself as such though.

How is any of that patronisiong and condescending. It's a serious question.

And if you're a pro, and running a business, you've got to have a thicker skin that this. I can't believe that anyone is offended by what I've written. It's not snide AT ALL.

You think that I'm being confrontational? How about when I joined the site and got a virtual booting from "professionals" on here because I merely hinted that at some point in the future I may shoot a wedding...?

I can't reconcile those two statements

never am really - the truth is, particularly on this forum, that wedding photographers are stereotypically like medical students ;)

What drunk and wandering around with a formaldehyde soaked, recently dissected male member in their pocket?

I'll shoot my next wedding in a white coat, dressed for rag week then

So because they are helpful in one section that gives them the right to stick the boot in to posters in other sections?

Thats not what I said, but without the more experienced people helping this forum would be the poorer.

Really? I went to medical school in the not too distant past and perhaps minus the member its quite an accurate picture! ;)

certainly not the ones I know and have taught - maybe those are the ones that never made it though

for someone who is making their income from photography to be asking about wedding lenses makes no sense to me. (Coupled with some of the questions in other recent posts). Clearer??

Why would it make no sense to you? Did I say I made a living from wedding photography?

I can't believe this is still going 6 pages later!

you said you made a living from photography, from that comment and some of your other posts the two things make no sense, sorry but thats how it is

Staff edit: Personal attack removed

can we go back to the bit about the fish... it was getting interesting around about then :D

Look - I've got no axe to grind here at all, I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than do another wedding, but I've done hundreds - all on film- the only digital ones I'ver done have been since I packed it in and for friends and relatives when I can't feign a stroke to get out of it. The simple fact is that digital has made photography a whole lot easier and it's made the prospect of doing a wedding a lot less daunting - something the pros have to come to terms with. But, and it's a big but - it's still possible to make a complete and utter [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] up of it - don't kid yourself about that for one minute.

Anyone who earns a living solely from wedding photography is working bloody hard at it and I think that's something that people need to respect. I've no problems with anyone having a go but far too often it's quite obvious that people are leaping into the fray before they're anywhere near ready to be doing it.

It' s invariably going to be a techy subject , but I think most of the pros here do pretty well in responding with advice to people 'having a go' , but what would those people have done before the internet? Try walking into the studio of the pro on your local high street, and telling him you're doing a wedding round the corner on Saturday, and you wouldn't mind a bit of advice about how to do use your flashgun and how to pose the groups. Go on - I dare you! Ask him what the going rate is while youre on - I double dare you! :D

When I grow up I want to be a wedding Photographer.

:)

I'm also puzzled by POAH's dislike of medics. Its a puzzling thread. Next thing you know the Mystery Machine will turn up.

The same as boyfalldown.

Well I don't know what he was puzzled about either to be honest.

Oh wait - hang on a minute - you are assuming that I am not good enough to make a living from photography, well why didn't you just come out and say it just to reinforce the point that pro photographers on here aren't patronising or condescending at all.

Well I'm afraid it may break your heart but I sell quite a lot of photos, enough to live off, even though I may ask questions about wedding photography lenses...

Paranoid much? Jesus, how do you arrive at 'you are assuming that I am not good enough to make a living from photography, well why didn't you just come out and say it just to reinforce the point that pro photographers on here aren't patronising or condescending at all.' from someone simply saying they can't reconcile 2 posts?

You're wide of the mark. It's an entirely reasonable question to ask someone who says they make their living from photography why they're asking questions like that.

I don't shoot wildlife or sport, but I've a good idea of what I'd need on the lens front. Same goes for architecture and so on.

cause I'm a Scientist

I know something about science, honestly! I have to work with scientists now and sometimes I might even be nice to them. My god, I even have one as a sister-in-law! You are just jealous because we can call ourselves Dr without actually really being proper doctors! ;)

Fair comment.

Truth is after attempting to learn the art myself I realised I had huge gaps in my knowledge that a more structured learning method would have filled in. Consequently I enrolled at a fairly reputable art college to learn photography properly from good tutors. It's expensive but worth it, been there 6 months now and my photos have improved dramatically, I was invited to exhibit by Wakefield Arts Group last week and I was really proud of myself.

My income is from selling photos that I have on display in my shop and also in lots of pubs in my area - truth being that I am a better marketer than a photographer... for now.

Good for you - seriously.

And don't knock the marketing side - it's hugely underlooked as a critical part of success.

Thanks for understanding I wasn't having a dig.

I've a PhD so I'm Dr by salutation not by job title :p
