So many 7d's for sale.....

I took the alternative route, Kept my Nikon D300 and purchased a Panasonic HDC-SD 600
camcorder.

If anyone is thinking along the same lines as me I can highly recommend this Panasonic one the movie quality is like watching TV - can take a stills print off the video- takes stills pictures and has most of the major features of a DSLR.

Not only that it is small enough to carry in a trouser pocket, a fantastic camera is my verdict.

but hang on, are you talking about automatic focus as in you do nothing, or are you talking about pressing a button to autofocus whilst shooting - if the latter then you can already do this on the 7d etc

AFAIK, the A55/A33 will do continuous AF when recording HD video. It will only record video with the lens wide open at the moment though.

My next dSLR (something along the lines of 5D mk?) will have video. It could be useful if I had to shoot a tutorial, demonstration or maybe even a wildlife clip. I don't see myself being a serious videographer now, but it is useful to have. BTW I wouldn't even consider 'a dedicated camcorder'. The [lack of] choice of lenses, DOF, high ISO is a no go. Video AF is only a matter of time.

I must concur with one of the statements above that people are buying the wrong camera to start with. If it's portraits & landscapes, then you need a 5DII, but if it's wildlife or sports, then the 7D hits the mark. They are both very different tools.

It would be nice if a camera that cost as much as the 5D II could be reasonably good at wildlife and sports too (better AF and faster burst speed). Here's hoping for the 5D III

I think in reality the reason for so many offered for sale just now is that many were bought on 12 months interest free credit. Expiry time is soon approaching so the decision to try and sell is made.

having been a real fan of panasonic camcorders, ive had 2 in this range inckuding the model before this one. as camcorders go these are the best ... but they are nothing in comparison to the video you get from a 7d or a 5dmk2. the gap in quality is simply mind blowing.

It is.......

Could you tell me more about this? I was not aware that the BBC had to 'broadcast approve' any cameras. How is any production is 'limited' to the 'amount of footage' that they can use. What do they limit?

I was told this by a close friend who shoots natural history documentrys for picture houses, including the BBC. And he has a 7D in his kit bag, which is used as much as possible.

When a pitch for a film is sent to the BBC they have to highlight exactly which camera the shot was recorded on, too make sure the 'DSLR limit' is not exceeded.

I hope this helps.

i've read this a lot on cinema5d forum too, not just in britain.

Plus the market for the 5d has dropped to the point where I might as well just keep it

My feelings too infact I have a 1D mkii that has only done 50k cost me over 4k and worth £1000+i guess and still more than capable of turning in a result to be proud of, infact i tent to keep a 16-35 on it these days...
