So how much have you spent on Photography Gear!

I doubt that you will get too many (honest) answers to that
I won't admit what I have spent even to myself
but at a quick calculation........
far too much :( :D

Lol.. i think it'll only be the singles our there that will be honest!! lol.. my wife reads this you know!!!

A lot, and intend to spend a lot more.

Waaaaay ........Tooooooo...... Much...But finnished now have all i need.... Honest :D

More than anyone else here, probably.

Around the £1200 mark.

Ikelite housing and camera unused ( second hand )

easy answer too much but there is alot more i want :cuckoo:

My gear is priceless :D

This prompted me to do a bit of adding up........oh, and don't forget the.....:thinking:.....that's seems to be the lot then.... so that makes a grand total of.....:gag:

Bob

I have to say that most of the stuff has come from the US secondhand and the only new bought lens is the 28-135 for my wife to use......I treated her to one with a gold ring around the end, not the cheaper red ringed ones that I have to use....I think she's worth it though :naughty:

Bob

Canon 10D, 20D, 5D (plus a Fuji & a Sony DSC F717 before the DSLRs)
Canon 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 28-135mm, 24-105mm, something by Sigma, Tamron 17-50mm.
Several Cheap tripods
Lots of various memory cards in various formats, plus adaptors, extra batteries, filters etc. etc.

Amount of money actually spent. I'd say less than £500. I have lots of people who love me and like to buy me things. You have every right to be jealous :D

Oh my God, this thread made me do the calculations, and I didn't want to do that!
Might not sound much for most people here, but I reached the 4k mark, and it's a LOT to me!

Since I started 50-something years ago I shudder to think, however it's not as much as I've spent on wine women and song that's for sure. Actually, forget the songs, they were usually free!

More than I would like to think about, but really, surprisingly little if you ask my Wife.....:naughty:

Hi Roger
regards Kevin

I'm very lucky in that I was given the camera and some lenses, anything I have bought came from the sale of a lens, so I have spent less than £100

I don't think I will be needing anything else and if I do hopefully birthdays and christmases and a lot of saving will provide somehow!

This is a painful exercise for anyone, but think of it in relation to other sports or hobbies you could have done instead

Motorsport, almost any motorsport would have cost far far more than you've spent on photography; even watching it costs a fortune
Football, as a supporter, t-shirts, annual tickets and travel - not to mention the beer too
As would climbing - due largely to the travel/accom costs
Even fishing with licenses, maggots, floats, etc. costs a packet over time

Actually, I reckon, unless you go 'gear junkie', photography is probably one of the cheapest participation hobbies after the initial gear purchase; and most of us only change our gear to 'upgrade' as a want, we probably don't need to

The upshot is... stop moaning... photography is CHEAP as a hobby and cheaper still for Pro use

Stop-in from the pub one night a week and that'll easily fund your gear's costs over a year

Or why not find your market, sell a few pics, the odd photo-shoot and make it pay that way - I guess few full-time Pros got up one morning and thought "I'll be a photographer for a living", they drifted into it

Try it - worst way going your gear purchases will be tax-deductible even if you never sell an image !!!

how can you gear be tax deductable

If you are a plumber you need tools right?

They are a business expense, and hence tax deductible

If you're a photographer you need a camera... same story

Here's the fun bit...

You place your free ad in Yellow Pages, you inform HMRC you are a photographer (part-time) and you complete your annual self-assessment form. Unfortunately, as you've not sold anything, you've made a loss on your gear - hence a tax-saving can be had. If you do sell something, but not much, your income could be offset against your gear purchases and hence you've bought your gear cheaper/free

Or so I'm told - which is my disclaimer on all that !!!

But dont forget to claim exemption from your National Insurance contributions or you could pay double!

This will probably sound like a cliché but my time is the most expensive thing I've spent! Like many others, photography isn't my full-time profession so I try to make the most of all my time photographing :)

Hmmm, if I'd have found that lot sat on a bench it may have saved me a few quid too. ;)

Might even has switched to Canon myself coming along that lot lying by the side of the road up for grabs

Well I just got up this morning and spent another £1220 before breakfast! It's so easy to spend it without leaving the house ;) My missus was sat with me as I spent it so all is good  Over the past 4 years I have probably spent 6k in total on camera and studio equipment and still haven't got a 1ds or any L glass :'( Watch out for my "for sale ad" soon :)

 I do that, buy things online when she is sat in the room, it's a b****r to explain when you arrive home from work to find the un-delivered parcel ticket though. :naughty:

Just a thought.....

Any of you who have websites, your addresses (home I mean, not e-mail) are relatively easily traceable. Now, do you REALLY want to leave a piblic advert for any dishonest types who might like to come and break into your house? a kit-list in our signatures is probably actually a foolish idea, however, a list of items isn't quite as much of an advert as a total value of items. Just think on it, eh?
