Smoking ban in cars with anyone under the age of 18

Does anyone really think that the people stupid enough to do that, care about a law against it?

That is the crux of the matter.
The underlying problem behind that is successive governments increasingly believe that legislation is the answer to everything. "We have a problem ............. no, we can sort that, we'll make another law". and they go on to ignore the plethora of their laws that are ignored/not enforced.

Too many lawyers in parliament and not enough common sense.

Im all for it Andy (not that I think it will stop those that are stupid enough to do it from doing it). Ive been 'clean' for 5 years now, and never smoked when I had dogs in the car, let alone a child.

This threads is a fine example of double standards of some tp posters. Many would quite happily see parents of overweight children prosecuted for child cruelty yet complain when a far more serious issue is addressed. All in the name of personal freedom

How is it a more serious issue than child obesity?
Genuine question.

This isnt hard to tell, no.

This, is more difficult...

As I said previously, im all for the ban if it will actually achieve anything. I was just pointing out that Dean wasnt being a stupid as he was being made out to be for suggesting it may not always be possible to spot an e-cig.

Thats all...

The problem with common sense, its not always common and it often doesnt make sense

I got that. ;) even then its not that hard to tell

but even if the odd person does get stopped for vapping with kids in the car does it matter? A two second conversation and you're on your way again. It won't be the only law that causes people to be stopped, checked and then allowed to move on

Not to mention that very few people i know who vape, use that style of ecig, they tend to be the 'grab one in the pub' style, most use the other style of large vape shown above, which are very distinctly and obviously different.

Genuine question.
Child obesity is reversable there are plenty of skinny grown ups who were fat kids. Damage to health from passive smoking is likely to be for life.

ha ha ha so true, mind you maybe its because some of the really fat people also smoke like chimneys :-)

Not the case.
Damage from passive smoking and for that matter primary smoking is largely reversable over time when smoking stops.

Childhood obesity can lead to the vascular system not developing correctly and that is never reversable.

no what I'm saying if you actually bother to read is that you wouldn't be able to tell if someone was using an ecig over a cig in the car. clearly your incapable of understanding what I said so maybe I need to explain it to you like I'm talking to a 5 year old in small words and sentences that you might understand.
given that many ecigs are made to look like a cigarette and even glow at the end and both produce clouds of what looks like smoke ( because its not smoke from an ecig its vapour ) then unless you were standing within a few feet of said person you would not be able to tell the difference
understand now or do I have to do pictures for you as well?

Well, if you're going to throw a tantrum Dean, probably best you don't participate in this thread any more. And if you could pick up your toys, we'd be most grateful.

i'm a smoker and the new law doesn't bother me one bit i never smoke in the car anyway even on my own
to be honest i can't stand the smell of stale smoke which might sound odd coming from a smoker

Damage in later life to children exposed to passive smoking is well documented but You make a good point on obesity.

I was the same when I smoked I could never smoke in the morning made me feel sick. Gave up 7 years ago aged 38. Always said I would stop at 40 but just chucked it in earlier. Smoking in cars is yuk.

A pointless and unnecessarily law in my opinion. Like the police will have enough time to enforce that. I guess just like they do with mobile phones etc.
No different to when wearing a seat belt became compulsory, I knew people who got prosecuted.

Passive smoking will starve a growing child's body of much needed oxygen it needs to develop.

Passive smoking may starve a growing child's body of much needed oxygen it needs to develop.

FTFY
I'm not disagreeing.
My point was that it shouldn't be seen as more damaging than childhood obesity.

Thank God both my parents smoke at home and in the car, when I was growing up then!
6 foot is quite tall enough for me!
I also uses to chew the ends of the lead pencils ( well that is the paint that coated the pencils was lead based) at school and chew my cot that was painted with paint that contained lead.
The early classrooms has asbestos ceilings....
Don't forget the good old 2/3 4* fuel that contained lead
And of course no one had central heating it was all coal fires, and not smokeless fuel either.
Its a wonder I ever made it past my 10th birthday TBH!

Wow a few posts since I posted and my argument is to STOP smoking all together , fines are just another income revenue from the government on something which is killing thousands every year.

That is nothing @Cobra , my mum ate Liver when she was expecting me :p

All valid points (but maybe a little glib!), but lets not ignore the vast improvement in infant mortality rates - in 40 years (1970 to 2010) in the UK, deaths of under 5's have gone from 22 deaths per 1000 births to 5 deaths per 1000, a dramatic drop.

What are the stats on the causes of the earlier deaths?
Any correlation to the uptake of vaccinations and the dramatic decrease in childhood diseases such as measles?

Of course not. Vaccinations are ineffective and poisonous and cause autism and are mind control drugs and other conspiracy stuff. I read it on the interweb.

If the report included colour pictures, then must indeed be factual! :-)

I would expect that my mum did too TBH.
My mum drank Guinness. Her doctor recommended it!
Indeed it was recommended, back then, but if you listen to the crap thats spouted about what / what isn't good for you, it changes almost weekly,
ie I think at the moment that red wine is actually in vogue? and a glass a day reduces the chances of a heart attack.

Yes it was intended to be a little glib, or indeed sarcastic, but its all true.

As to your second point, I think Ruth pretty much covered it.

Not for pregnant women it isn't! Recommendation for them is no units.
But the recommendations about cheeses changed in the 22 months between our two children. And the evidence on nuts is looking like a U-turn will be coming there too.

The red wine and heart attack thing is a weird one. The experiments that produced those results only looked at the beneficial aspect of the active compounds and didn't consider the negative effect of the alcohol. BBC did an article a while back where a doctor weighed it up on balance. I think it was titled "is red wine really good for you?".

I have had a quick look and cannot find any further analysis on that set of numbers.

Another site with a bit more detail, but a quick scan doesn't give any conclusion as the causes of the reduction:-

Goddamit Mother! not only did you smoke when you were pregnant, but you also drank too! Its no wonder I'm such a weedy little thing :(

whats total rubbish about it? You mean you can't see when someone has a cigarette in their hand? Honestly if thats true you shouldn't be driving for other reasons.

Yes, I know what an e-cig is an looks like ta. Presuming you can tell the difference between one and a real fag?

This is my daily ecig. Looks exactly the same as a ciggie!

One of my customers, has something very similar to that, quite a slip of a girl too!
In fact hers may even be bigger, (if you have small hands?) as I'd struggle to hold it comfortably!

That looks absolutely ridiculous

Not as ridiculous as my lungs after 20 years as a smoker. I'm young enough still for them to recover and now have a harmless way to enjoy nicotine so everything is good.

I wish there was e sweets now as the pain I've endured in the dentists this morning was harrowing!

I've got Hendrix hands. You can hardly see it when I'm actually using it.

What's in the E Cigs flavoured liquids also concerns me , you don't know what you are inhaling at least cigs you know its another nail in your coffin.

I'm sure I read a week or so ago that although red wine contains something to reduce heart attacks, the amount is so small, you have to consume 100 litres a week.
