Smoking ban in cars with anyone under the age of 18

This country if fecked lets face it..........I feel sorry for the younger generation as in my teenage son who is 19 and already owe's 30k in University education fee's and he still has a further 2 years left.

It's not real debt though, so I wouldn't worry about it, doesn't show up on credit reports, doesn't impact mortgage repayments, and if you're earning £22K, the repayments are a massive £90 a year.

At the end of the day the Government know it causes cancer so in my eyes there is ONLY 1 option Ban cigarettes completely.

Saw a chap in his drop top on the way home, 2 kids in situ, smugly smoking away.
Will sales of convertibles rise I wonder?

Not all people that smoke, get cancer, not all cancer sufferes smoked.
Besides, there is far too much money at stake, be that the multi billion business,
or the 12.3 billion£ raised in taxes.

According to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) figures, the typical price of a pack of 20 cigarettes was £6.83 last year. Of this, a full £5.61 was tax, including tobacco duty and VAT. So 82% of the price of a pack is tax which goes back to the Treasury. Hand-rolling tobacco is less burdened by tax (67% goes to the Treasury) and cigars even less so (45%).

Figures are sketchy as to the cost to the NHS but put between 2.5 & 6 billion,
So worst case scenario, there would be a 6 billion ££ shortfall.

It's the age thing that gets me. I could be banging a 17yo, have a baby with her, marry And she could work. But smoke in the car with her? That's the crazy thing.

Simple enough, just continue taxing all the ex smokers. ;)

Even crazier, there was a scenario posed to a lawyer on the radio, if a 17 year old, picks him mum up in a car, and he is smoking, they are both liable.
Him for smoking in a car with an under 18 (himself) and his Mum ( being the responsible adult, even if she can't drive) for allowing someone to smoke in a car that has an under 18 in it!
The world has gone f*****g mad!

Damned good idea ! I suggest we start that right now, all the self righteous ex smokers can chip in too (y)

Probably overridden by the fact rhat the smoking age is now 18 and has been for a while

If that happens, then I will start smoking again :)

How old do you have to be before you can legally buy cigarettes?

18....as per previous post.

I always thought it was 16.....hence why anyone under 18 in a car........I think I will get my coat :)

18+ and a lot of places have notices "if you don't look 25 be prepared to show ID.
( just like alcohol )

IIRC its NOT an offence to smoke at 16 though.

I always thought you could buy cancer sticks @16.

Missed that with my last post, I thought you could still smoke at 16, but couldn't buy them, nor could anyone else buy them for you?

Strictly speaking true.
But if the bobbies think you're under 18 they can confiscate your "gear" :-)

I didn't realise that its was that long ago, but from the NHS web site
From October 2007, the age limit to buy tobacco products was raised from 16 to 18 as part of the government’s policy to prevent smoking in public places

More donations to the police Christmas party ;)

Talk about nanny state :runaway:
It's not a nanny state law. Nanny state laws are to protect you from yourself. Such as crash helmets and seat belts, and such like. Other laws like child abuse, drink driving and smoking in pubs and restaurants, are not nanny state laws. They are to reduce cases of inconsiderate people bullying, hurting or killing innocent people. Only nasty pieces of low life scum object to those laws.

Speaking as a nasty piece of low life scum I only want one protection. I want to be protected from sanctimony! Whether it's a sanctimonious objection to tobacco or car driving or dogs or someone else's different political or religious opinion. And, boy! hasn't the internet been a marvellous Godsend of an outlet for the sanctimonious and bigoted!

Going to have to agree to disagree you are saying it seems that people who smoke in a car are bullying the under 18 person accept or go a different way thats not being a bully its called choice. I have the choice to smoke like it or not and the under 18 who says otherwise is free to make alternative travel arrangements.

If said under 18 decides to go in the car that i would be commiting slow killing of innocent people with respect rubbish my dad smoked while i was in the car so far i am still alive i have had far more risky encounters driving and walking the streets.

You thinking smoking is bad try drink and drive or hard drugs

Okay, so if the law states that you have to be 18 and over to buy and smoke cigarettes, but bearing in mind an 18 years old hardly look any different from a 16 years old. What happens if...

1. The police saw you smoking with what looked like someone under 18 in your car and stopped you? Wouldn't that just proved that enforcing the smoking ban in car with anyone under 18 to be a moot point, if it turns out that half the cars stopped on grounds that driver is smoking with what looked like a passenger under 18, turns out that the passenger is over 18? Wouldn't that costs a lot of money for the police to have to make official reports?

2. You and a 16 years old is smoking in the car, or that the 16 years old is the one smoking in the car, but the police saw the 16 years old, and somehow mistakenly assume that person to be 18 years old?

Hasn't vaping all but killed-off "proper" smoking these days?

As long as the mother isn't smoking it's not a problem.
The police have been visiting local youth groups explaining to them that if they driving at 17 or in a car
driven by a 17 yo they can't smoke but a 17yo old in a car with over 18s can.
Just how crazy is that .

That's where the law is an ass and common sense should be applied.

Because the law is there to protect under 18's that don't smoke, not crazy at all.

So you'd kick your kids out of the car and tell them to make their own way. Nice dad you are.
My dad smoked when I was a kid, and I'm talking 1960's - 70's, yet he never smoked in the car. He had the decency and respect not to inflict his smoking on us whilst in a confined space and would wait until he was out of the car.

I was the same, didn't smoke in the car, nor in the house, and gave up when they were at their most vulnerable and I had to handle them and help my wife....And later on still didn't smoke around them, and ultimately just gave up'ish.

lets see how long that attitude lasts after your house is burgled, family members beaten and the police response is 'sorry sir, the criminals were not sanctimonious so we let them go.'
