Slimberts 52, Week 26, "Beginnings" (Page 15)

great portrait for week 7 , is that taken with the new glass? , we wanna see examples of it :D

I like it, it works for me and I think you've caught his character well.

Great shot, full of character (as has already been stated), awesome story too, people like this amaze me.

Thanks loads everyone!

I'm in a bit of a rush atm so can't reply to everyone individually, sorry! :(

Really busy at work and at home at the moment, and this is going to continue for a while, so I might be posting a few Jokers in the coming weeks (as I'm about to do for week 8!) so I apologise in advance for that!

Thanks again everyone for all the lovely comments! :D

Week 8....Joker! :shake:

Really wanted to avoid using these but sadly there's no way round it at the moment....

So here is a picture that I took earlier this week when I was out with Lynton in North Norfolk. Hopefully Lynton will be along soon to say exactly where it is, as I don't have a clue!!

This is the first time I've ever used liveview on my 40D. Didn't even know how to switch it on, so it's a good job I had the instruction manual in my bag!

IMG_2912a1.jpg

C+C always welcome from people of all abilities....don't hold back!!

Nice to see you back on here Damien, I thought you were MIA;)

As for your image, I don't think there is anything 'jokerish' (is that even a word?) about your photograph. I think it fits the theme of mechanical.

I love the colours in this, very vibrant and the silhouette (sp) is very sharp. Well done:thumbs:
You've learned something new too by using liveview...that rhymes:D
All round good work.
Cheers
Iain

Thanks Iain! I did think about using it as a "Mechanical" shot but Lynton just laughed at me and made me feel stupid () !!

I've never thought about using liveview before, but in that situation, it worked really well and I can see me using it much more often should the need arise....

Thanks again Iain! :D

wow I think its agreat shot loving the colours

Hi Damien,

Lovely pic - and I am going to let you off on crowbarring that in as Mechanical - even though I promised/threatened to rip the hell should you even attempt to do so on such a tenuous link) .........as the results on here at 800 pix even blow away the things we were seeing on the LCD's of the cameras...........

For those who want to know where it is:

The mill itself is on the North Norfolk Coast Road, between Burnham Overy Staithe and Burnham Norton.............

We had originally planned on going to Binham Priory for some sunset stuff, if you could pick it up and plonk it round 180 degrees would have been good but it was crap! , so with the sun setting we rapidly headed to Wells (next the sea) which too was pants.

I then remembered this mill and the poor car got a thacking as we bombed along a twisty turny single lane road to it to catch the sunset.

I may or may not have driven up a farm track suitable only for tractors  and we may or may not have trespassed  onto the edge of a farmers field to get the shots.....

And yes I am annoyed that Damien's liveview is more clever than mine! (Once he read the destructions!)

After that - we headed to Kings Lynn to get some interesting shots of the docks at night........... that was hmmmmmmmmmmm "uneventful?" (nonexistent!)

I really like #8 damien, lovely crisp edges and the sky is amazing.

My favourite of yours so far :)

Btw I didn't know you had a 40D. You finally couldn't stand the sony a200 anymore eh ? hahah.

Thanks Lynton! I am quite happy with the photo....and it sort of fits the theme, so it's not a complete "Joker"!! It's nice to think that Thursday wasn't a complete waste of time! And my pizza was lovely!!

Yes you did, and my backside was nipping a little bit expecting your exhaust to fall off at any moment! :phew:

Thanks Steven! Switched to Canon just before Christmas, and really do like the system. On the whole I don't really have any brand loyalty and just use the best camera I can afford at the time....Sony, Nikon, Canon, anything but Pentax to be honest!!

I do miss my a200 though, base ISO was perfect and I stand by my opinion that the a200 is THE best beginner/starter/learner camera out there....the only things that made me change was the noise issue above ISO400 on the Sony, the better build quality of the 40D, and the fact that my 40D came up a bargain price and it didn't cost me much at all to upgrade once I'd sold my Sony....

You think you'll change brands at some point, or are you Sony for life?

Just been catching up on your 52 Damien. some good work so far. No need to appologise for the joker though its a cracking shot with some beautiful deep colours.

Thanks for commenting Chris! :D Much appreciated!

Beautiful shot!.....but it's a windmill what's that if not Mechanical?? :)

Thanks Sonia!

And you're right, it is Mechanical.....!! :)

:D Don't listen to Lynton . . . Windmills are mechanical so
and it was taken in the right time frame (almost!) so double

That's an absolutely beautiful shot!
Nice crisp silhouette and gorgeous sky. It certainly ticks all the boxes for me, so if this is one of your jokers I'm looking forward to seeing the next one.

BTW what's going on with your new avatar pic? . . . it looks kind of :gag:

Nice, simple, clean and very well composed, this is one very pretty picture Damien. And let's not forget the actual technicalities involved in getting a decent sunset pic on the Eastern side of the country!

Arthur

PS - I reckon Lynton deserves a pat for the location too...

That's a couple of corking photos there Damien.

The portrait is great, and so is the story behind it. Who needs photos of celebrities when there are true heroes in every town.

And that silhouette is amazing. Lovely shot.

Ian.

.

Why, does it it not set on the eastern side? :p

Seriously though, jokers or not, the last couple of images are crackers, for different reasons. The portraits [and story] I love simply because you have captued the essence of his obvious good nature and humour. The Windmill is just a very pleasing, easy on the eye, shot.

I never do!!

Thanks Sarah! I know it isn't perfect, but it's come out better than I thought it would when I took it, so I'm quite happy with it!

It's my head! :shake: I shot a wedding about a week ago with ryanyboy and I head butted the lock inside an open boot lid of a car....my own fault for not paying attention! :bonk:

Yes, but the sun's over all the rest of the smoggy-rotten country! Sunrises around this part of the world are awesome :D

Thanks Arthur! :D Being on the east coast with no hills etc can make it tricky to capture a decent shot of the sun setting in the west, but I'm pretty happy with this one! Nothing fancy, just keeping it simple, but I think that's why it works for me!

Lynton deserves nothing after "finding" the disaster that is Binham Priory!! :gag: Although he drove that night, so I bought him his tea (a Hot and Spicy Meat Feast Pizza!), and we always have a laugh (usualy till my sides hurt!) so I forgive him!! ;)

Thank you Ian! :) Kevin really is a hero, we need more people like him in the world. Would be a much better place....

Why, does it it not set on the eastern side? :p

Technically yes....

But we have no dramatic hills/mountains in Norfolk....which is why we have to use windmills!! :p

Thanks Yvonne! After the minor disaster of the wedding last weekend, it's good to here I "do" a good photo once in a while! :D

Lynton deserves nothing after "finding" the disaster that is Binham Priory!!

Be a cracking sunrise though! Not my fault that some munchkin many years ago decreed that altars etc had to be at the Eastern end of a church and they built the new one at the wrong end.........

It's got potential (Binham priory) though I am struggling with how / why / where/ when / what.........

Yeah i'll switch when I can afford to do so :)

I don't know about Joker... is that cos it's a little late ?? It's bang on theme though and I love it.

The content of the link below wouldn't have anything to do with you or Lynton would it Damien?:D

DENY Everything!

Think I covered it up well enough in my 52...

Ouch !!!!

Thanks Sarah! It did hurt a bit....:(

I don't know about Joker... is that cos it's a little late ?? It's bang on theme though and I love it.

Thanks John! :D But if you think that ones late....I haven't done "Play" or even thought about "Chemistry" yet!! :shake:

Right then, time to catch up a little!

Not had much time for photography recently :shake: so I've fallen behind with my 52 a little :( If things go to plan, work should slow down a little soon (ain't holding my breath though!) and I can get out a bit more with my camera! :D Fingers crossed....!!

Just a simple snap of my eldest daughter "Playing" on the Wii as she often does on a Saturday morning.....(High School Musical 3 for anyone that's wants to know! :D) Hopefully I haven't copied too many other 52er's with this, and I know it's a bit boring, but it gets me almost up to date!! "Chemistry" photo will hopefully get done tomorrow, although I still haven't figured out exactly how I'm going to do it!!

Anyway, here's Lexi doing what she does best!!:

Comments are welcome from people of all abilities, don't be scarred to say what you think!!

Certainly fits the "play" theme though............ would have been funnier though to see young daughter, trash Daddy at Wii Sports golf or Tennis!

Just don't get High School Musical!

This says play to me too Damien on theme just like your windmill for mechanical eh Lynton?

Damien is just out of shot in this Lynton, he is at Lexi's right hand side wearing a headband and some fluorescent leg warmers:D

Thank you Iain! ;) Nothing more than a snap, but I need to get back on track with this and as long as it fits the theme, I'm happy enough!! :D

You've spent too much time at my house Iain!!

This says play to me too Damien on theme just like your windmill for mechanical eh Lynton?
Pah! OK I concede, a windmill may have a cog in it somewhere......and thereby by definition is mechanical...... . As chauffeur for the night, I thought it only appropriate given I had driven up a rutted farm track AND trespassed into the field (albeit set-aside) that my passenger could quite delicately walk across a couple of acres of winter barley and putting on his best northern accent, go speak t' mill owner and ask if he could go up into the cowling and tilt t'mill 45 deg or so to make a better profile........)

Damien is just out of shot in this Lynton, he is at Lexi's right hand side wearing a headband and some fluorescent leg warmers

and in the words of Mr J Clarkson, "on that bombshell......... goodnight!"

So week 10, and "Chemistry"....

This is definitely going to be a Marmite shot this one, although I suspect most people will hate it!! :gag:

It's a list of some of the more harmful and IMO shocking ingredients in cigarettes....something I've smoked longer than I haven't! Well over half my life, spending a small fortune, only to put these chemicals in my lungs....:shake:

I'm currently going through the motions of preparing myself for quiting. I've even changed to a different medical surgery because my old one isn't bothered if people stop or not....!! (I'm quoting the receptionist here) "We no longer offer extra support to people who are stopping smoking"

Anyway, I went for the over done "gritty" feel for this one. I know it won't be everyones cup of tea but for the first time in quite a while, I'm on time and up to date! :phew:

So, here comes the Marmite.....!!!

IMG_2988a.jpg

As always, please feel free to say exactly what you think about my photos....whatever your ability!!

Certainly not marmite. I like marmite :D

Seriously, like you I've been smoking most of my adult life (apart from a few periods where I gave up, most notably for four years!). It's certainly a list that makes you think about what you're doing to yourself, but I'm afraid it is just a list and doesn't convey much more to me. Sorry :)
