Slimberts 52, Week 26, "Beginnings" (Page 15)

Not as sharp as you'd like, but the colours and expression make it a nice shot, mate.

Thank you! It was shot at f1.8 which makes moving subjects a little tricky, but I'm pretty pleased with the result. Way out of my comfort zone this street lark!!

W2 I think the second with more hand showing works better, mono conversion also gives the shot that little bit extra.

W3 Caught some nice texture and subtle colours. I hope you enjoyed the pork from your second option.

W4 Glad to hear you are getting out of your comfort zone, I would have perfered it if there was no eye contact though.

that's the sort of direction I thought this week's subject might take
kudos for you having the balls to do it
scares me witless

contrast a bit high for my taste, but if you're going for gritty I guess it's ok!

Nice eye contact there - He didn't look overly happy at having his pic taken - maybe he thought you were Immigration or something similar............

Yeah - bit difficult the up and in yer face type stuff isn't it. I will revisit my week 4 before the end of the year..........

No offence to anyone else, but I've seen a lot of black and white street pics this week and wanted to avoid that, hence the high contrast colour effort. I wouldn't normally push it that far but I think it suits the theme....

My second edit is even more contrasty!!

Thanks for commenting!

Cheers Lynton, once he knew he was being photographed, he was quite jolly and started smiling. But this was that split second of eye contact before he smiled and it became a pose....

Right, second edit!

Bit more of everything, and a tighter crop....

Any better??!

I like it, bit blue but it's the time of year - and I love the look, almost like he wishes he was somewhere else!

I like both but the tighter crop is better. Only niggle is the bottom lh corner where it looks like the border has randomly bled into the picture.

Good to meet you today, haven't had a chance to process mine yet, but as I was on the 10-20mm there's no candids. I wasn't going to get that close.

Thanks Mark! Didn't go that far into editing to get rid of the black bit, lazy I know but I just this theme to end!! :shake:

Hopefully you'll make it to the meet next week, would be good to meet again....I know I'll feel much more comfortable using a tripod! ;)

i likes it :D , nice colours.

anyone who has the balls to go out and do it gets a  from me

Great shot. I found it very nerve wracking getting up close and personal myself.

A cracking shot - well done! I'm not so keen on the over saturated colours but that is just a matter of personal taste. The tighter crop works well.

:clap::clap:

Well done for getting a shot of strangers. I have just had a try today and its not easy is it?

No it isn't! I could have cheated and used my 300mm, but I decided to restrict myself. I start off with a 17-35mm, but this was a little too wide so I put my 50mm on and stuck with that....It would have been a lot easier with a long zoom!!

Thanks Richard, I'm giving ALL street shots extra resect from now on....!!

Great shot. I found it very nerve wracking getting up close and personal myself.

Thank you Steve, I deal with confrontation (often violent) almost every day of my working life, but the thing that caught me out with street togging, is that you don't know what peoples reaction will be....it's that fear of the unknown that really caught me off guard!

I guess the confidence to really do it, comes with time and practice

I particularly like the eye contact in that one Damien, pulls you in.

Thanks Yv! The eye contact was the one thing I tried to get the most, I've got plenty of shots of people staring at the ground etc but none of them do it for me....

I do like strong colours, but I wouldn't normally push the colours that much, however I really didn't want to do black and white for this one, and the over saturated look hopefully gives it a slightly gritty feel? Maybe not...but that was the idea! Thanks for the comment!

Like the eye contact you've got here as it draws you in but it seems a little soft to me, I wonder if that was because the aperture was wide open  as I tend to use a maximum of f4 when taking candids as it throws the background out enough whilst keeping all the facial features in focus.

Well done for getting out there though and it's only through experience of this kind that you'll learn what settings work best for you

The eye contact definitely makes it, particularly as his mate is oblivious to you. Like the contrasty colour. I don't think any softness detracts at all from this sort of image if it's right, and this one is

I'll be honest, getting a sharp photo was the last thing on my mind!! I think the focus point was just above his fingers, so his face will definitely be soft, but you're right, lessons learnt and my settings would certainly be different next time...

Thanks loads for commenting! :)

Great shot !!
Love the content and the processing works well too.

Thanks Rob!

And a big thanks to everyone who comments on my 52....it really is appreciated guys/gals! I know there are LOADS of 52's to get round and it's lovely that you take time to comment on mine....

THANKS!!!!

The street shot is very interesting, I really like the composition and tone. It was hard to decide which crop I prefer, the red thing in the top right makes for a good border but it does help to have the subject more in-frame. Ultimately I think the second crop is the best.

Steven.

Ooh lovely shot damien... I even know where that is! Lol. I was watching these buskers just the other week! :D

I like that, I'd have done a runner when he made eye contact personally!!! I prefer the edit too, good stuff

Chris

Love the eye contact. Just enough for the shot and he really looks like he's enjoying himself. Not sure about his mate in the background though - did he not want to be there or just not want to be in the shot?

Cheers Toby! :) These two are new to me, never seen them before. They are just down the street from the Puppetman, who's still my favourite! ;)

Thanks Chris! They were quite happy to be photographed which made things easier, and I prefer the 2nd edit too! :)

Cheers Jackie! :D The second guy kept laughing/smiling when he saw the cameras, he was loving it! But I thought some shallow DOF might help the shot, hence the f1.8...

Should have done something around f8 to see if that would have been better but I didn't hang around long enough to try! ;)

Puppetman all the way... you seen much of chinese elvis recently? lol

Not sure if you saw but I won't be able to make this weekend! Sorry... I've had to take my days off for something at the end of the month.

Have a good time anyways! And I look forward to seeing the photos!

It's good, but the crop is even better... Well done for doing this. The eye contact makes it and I like the processing.

Great shot for your "street image" mate. FWIW I like the original one your posted up - I think the PP is a bit too much in the second one and I preferred the wider crop of the first one. Still it's a nice image - the eye contact makes it.

I like the street photo and prefer the tighter crop. It makes the subject more prominent. I would not dare to take pictures of people in the street.

I also really liked your spam image. It is a very different take on the theme rather than chopped wood or vegetables!

Jenny

No worries about this weekend! I'm sure there will plenty more meets this year, especially over the summer....

Thanks loads! I definitely prefer the drop too....

Hi Dmamien, I like the composition of this image and the fact you have your subject looking at the lens. I feel the same about street photography, much more acceptable 50 yrs ago.

Hi Martin! :) Thanks for your comment, much appreciated!

Thanks Ryan! :D "Street" was always going to be a pain in the bum but at least I got through it in one piece, way out of my comfort zone with this subject! Thanks for the comment, although I'm sticking to my guns on prefering the second edit :p

Thank you Jenny! Seemed a lot of people did the chopped wood for week 3, including me, so I thought I'd do an extra one to make up for being a bit boring! Thanks for commenting!! :)

I like the Street shot, the bright colours work well for me and the fact there's eye contact really adds alot to it. Well done :)

Hi Damien, Just having a first look round your thread, and a bit of a catch up. :)

Week 1: Curved. I really like this - the mono treatment and the composition both work well. I wouldn't have guessed what it was - I obviously don't see enough of our hoover thingy!

Week 2: Poetry. I'm a northerner too, and 'read' it with a suitable accent. I was expecting the photo to be three geezers staggering between two pubs - but JD's always good. No complaints, except the bottle's empty. I prefer the 'hand' version. :)

Week 3: Chopped. Lovely colours and textures in the wood and an interesting perspective.

Week 4: Street. I love this - the accordian player looks like he's enjoying bieng the centre of attention, and the dof works very well. Well done on leaping out of your comfort zone so effectively.

Sadly, "Speed" is going to have to wait...:(

Simply been too busy with work this past week, plus I'm now in the gym every other night trying get rid of my frankly enormous gut....I should really have forced myself to get out last night after the Norwich Cathedral meet but once I'd sat down after getting the kids in bed, the lure of my bed and a film was too strong!!

On the upside, I'll now have two themes to shoot this week. I wonder if I can combine the two themes in one shot....aswell as seperate ones obviously!
