No
well done both

Andy "I'm not British" Murray.

And still no recognition for our GB women's mountain biker Rachel Atherton who won her 4th world championship this year (2 in a row) and 13 unbeaten world cup rounds over 2 seasons (new record) and 30 wins overall.

But let's stick to mainstream headline sports..

Ken Dodd for services to tax evasion?

Well done both.
Incidentally, I believe Murray's is for his achievements in tennis (which, like him or not, cannot be disputed), not any comments made to the press.

Honours system is a joke, getting a knighthood for playing a sport. Posh spice has been given an OBE for services to the fashion industry, it's a joke
How many gold medals have you won?
Agree re Victoria Beckham though.

I have always thought it was screwed up. Sir run around in a circle, or Sir hit a ball. They need to say to the Real Heros Sir/Dame, but sadly our REAL Heros will Never get that.

No, its for excellence - wining double golds in 2 Olympics is no mean feat and should be recognised. not to decry our forces but they have many medals for valour/excellence.

74% of the awards have gone to "ordinary" people.
Won't stop you whining though.

and? he is still playing a sport and makes a s*** load of cash from it. You can't compare knocking a fuzzy yellow ball about with a snow shoe to those that actually deserve to be honoured. To reuse your point above sports stars get paid a lot of money and get big trophies for their efforts when they win.

I'm sure Andy Murray would agree with you, but that's not what this thread is about.

except this thread isn't about the 74% of ordinary people and who is whining?
Considering we don't know any of the ordinary people....well my dad got an OBE a few years ago, so I know him and he was pretty ordinary ;)
what has that got to do with the honours system - how much has andy murry contributed to science or teaching of young minds
Possibly more than you've contributed to tennis :p

It is good that 74% of the honours have gone to ordinary folks but it should have been 100%.

Why?

So, if for example 1,000 people received honours, 740 would have been ordinary people, the other 260 went to celebs, sports people or whoever. If 100% went to ordinary people, there would still only be 740 of them. So who gains from the other 260 not being given?

Laura Kenny (Trott) is the most successful female track cyclist in Olympic history, and her husband Jason Kenny has equalled Chris Hoys total of 6 gold medals. I think they are deserving of knighthoods.

Why? Just because they can ride a bike fast.

That's not why he's getting the honour.
Try to keep up.....and also have the good grace to spell someone's name right.

Edit....I wonder how many children have been inspired to try tennis following his success.
Not every child's future achievements lie in academia...in fact I'd suggest they're in the minority.

2. Nominate someone who lives in the UK

And both HAVE received honours in the list.

yep happy for those two to get honours, it is not just about what they do it is about insping people and instilling pride in your nation.
sport in our ever waistband expanding world needs pushing and promoting now more than ever.

Ok, some stars like him will make loads of cash, but many of the olympians wont.

What has that got to do with the honours system?
Andy Murry's knighthood wasn't just for tennis, but also for services to charity.

I demand someone be outraged on my behalf. ;)
Do your own out-raging.
I'm not raising my blood pressure so you can feel smug and warm and fluffy :p

I didn't say andy was getting his knighthood for that if you care to re-read the post I was replying to.

I also didn't say every childs future was in academia either or even any.

nothing but it wasn't a reply to what Andy is being given his knighthood for.
