Sir mo farah and sir Andy Murray

Why?

So, if for example 1,000 people received honours, 740 would have been ordinary people, the other 260 went to celebs, sports people or whoever. If 100% went to ordinary people, there would still only be 740 of them. So who gains from the other 260 not being given?

If it was decided that 740 ordinary people deserved honours then that is fine. No one gains from the other 260 not being given, but why should honours be given to some of the 260 for doing their job?

Probably for the same reason that some of the ordinary people get them for doing their job.

I have to admit I do not know if some of the ordinary people have received honours for doing their job but those I have heard about seem to have been rewarded for what they have done outside their normal jobs.

The celebs and other well known people who have been honoured have already received(in most cases IMO very well deserved) approbation for their activities. They do not need any additional credit.

Those non celebs or sporting personalities, awarded for their efforts either in work or charitable fields, probably don't require additional credit either.
That's why they're called honours, not rewards.

It is very easy to criticise sports men and women for getting an honour. It's also very easy to forget the blood, sweat and tears over years and years. The word 'sacrifice' is often used to describe the decision to commit to a path that may give them nothing (in financial terms) not unlike the ballet dancers who do the same perhaps to be in the corps de ballet for years. so, yes a few will get huge financial reward, trophies and so on. But not just for turning up... So I am pleased that such lifelong effort and commitment is recognised.

Do your own out-raging.
I'm not raising my blood pressure so you can feel smug and warm and fluffy :p
Outrageous!

And now he can join the ranks of Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris, oh wait......

Well done Mr Murray, although I'm not a sport fanatic I can appreciate the amount of dedication and perseverance it's taken for him to get to this level, in addition to the charitable work [emoji3]

No, its for excellence - wining double golds in 2 Olympics is no mean feat and should be recognised. not to decry our forces but they have many medals for valour/excellence.
And these guys have their GOLD medals to show for their efforts, and little risk to life and limb whilst doing it.

Sure they should be recognised for their achievements but the honors system is getting to a point where even your neighbour will have a CBE for fitting a wind turbine in his/her garden.

An exaggeration obviously but personally I feel the honors system needs an overhaul.

We are not even an empire anymore which what on earth do those mean nowadays?

I find it a little odd that you can become a Knight/Dame for being a sportsperson but those who do lots for charity or medical Science can end up with a CBE or OBE.

People who save lives should be given an honors recognition over any sports person or musician.
