SimonTALM's 52 for 2010 pt 1 - Week 13 Quad added

It works very well, is very effective too. Love the double chopped.

I thought I would experiment a little this week and decided it was about time to get out my 10 Stop ND and use it myself. (The only one to use it so far has been Marcel on the way back from the York TP Convention and I still haven't seen those pics)

This is a large crop from the centre of a larger image as the original didn't have any where near enough people in the main part of the image (this doesn't have enough people in the left and right edges of the frame as it is)

Things I learned this week

1) When trying out new things it's easy to forget the basis like how to compose an image.
2) When you want people to walk through your photograph they don't
3) 10 Stops is a lot of light to loose and even on the bright sunny day this took 6 seconds to capture (I should have upped the ISO by a couple of stops to make the time a bit less and capture less movement.

nearly missed this as you haven't changed the title yet! I like the street market but I can't get on with the moving people .. they seem to come out as smudges on my monitor. I know it's not your picture in particular as it is the same on a couple of other peoples pictures.

Do you have a bigger version Simon? I like the idea but if anything I'd like to see more movement right across the frame, but I guess that's what point 2 of your lessons learnt is all about :)

I really like that Simon!

Really good interpretation of street and something outside the box.

The movement for me is spot on - not too much and just enough to show a bustling busy row. I like your low angle too.

Eeeexcellent

Love it. Would work well for speed too. :)

Nice street shot Simon, the movement defo adds to the shot. ;)

That is so close to being an absolutely perfect shot!

Love the concept and the perspective that you've got on the market.
I agree with your lessons learnt though . . . just a touch too much motion blur for me and not quite enough movement left and right. It's almost there though.

Sounds like it was a good learning experience though - looking forward to any future attempts at this.

An excellent idea and take on the theme Simon. I like it a lot, and the low POV really helps. I may have to nick the idea ;) and give it a try.

Great idea trying to capture some movement, agree with above comments as to a little too much as the shoppers don't stand out enough against the stalls.

Loving the idea and overall, it has worked, but I think a bit more practice would have this nailed Simon. Definately one fo those things I might try if th eopportunity presents itself, and my 10stop is in my bag at the time of course ;)

I can see what you were trying to do here Simon and it's almost worked for me. Glad to see you're not perfect after all :D

And I do exactly the same as you when trying something new - I'm so caught up in the technique I forget at least one of the basics :(

But it definitely says street so

Thanks for reminding me about the title, I agree just a little too much motion blur unfortunately.

Spot on, it's why I'm not happy about it. If you click on the image you link directly to Flickr and you can the a larger version there.

Thank you :D

Cheers. Speed yep I know but that's the joy of the 52.

Nice street shot Simon, the movement defo adds to the shot.

As you say, so close.

Feel free to knick the idea

Great idea trying to capture some movement, agree with above comments as to a little too much as the shoppers don't stand out enough against the stalls.

I just wish I had nailed it, next time

Loving the idea and overall, it has worked, but I think a bit more practice would have this nailed Simon. Definitely one of those things I might try if the opportunity presents itself, and my 10stop is in my bag at the time of course

Keep the 10 stop in the bag (or better stuck to your tripod as you will need a tripod)

Perfect, moi? Well actually I am, this was a deliberate shot that was not quite there to make sure everyone else doesn't feel inferior ;)

Oh how the brain works,

This started off as a simple "lines" shot for an alternative Speed shot but then it suddenly hit me an extra line at 90 degrees makes it look like a gear symbol - especially when shot against a circular mirror. So this shot is Speed in 2 ways. Although, I'm guessing that any car with this gear indication won't go that quickly as it only has 4 gears and reverse ;)

P.S. It looks more gear like in thumbnail

Things I learned this week:

1) Maldon Sea Salt doesn't chop well with a Stanley knife blade (although it crushes well in a pestle and mortar)
2) I learned that Speed (amphetamines) is a crystaline substance that can be snorted like cocaine; according to frank that is (I thought it was pill formed but then I'm a good boy :D)
3) Bank notes don't stay rolled up particularly well for photographs (but bluetack and some scotch tape help fantastically).
4) A black fabric is always better than the black side of a reflector for keeping unwanted light reflection when shooting down on to a surface.

thats a great idea simon! Very clever! Like it!

A nice twist on what seems to have been a popular direction of thought this week. Gets a thumbs up from me!

As above, nice twist and could almost be an advert for Fifth Gear as you need drugs to watch it :naughty:

Catch up time! :)

Week 4 Street: I like the energy generated in this, Simon. I agree with your learning points, and a bit less (but only a bit!) blur would be acceptable. For me it's still an excellent Street shot!

Week 5 Speed: Very clever double take on the theme.

I like the interpretation, too - and can't think of anything at all that I'd change.

Excellent. That is what I call lateral thinking and the execution is absolutely spot on.

of all the drug related takes I think this is the best
(sorry everyone else)

the gear shape is well executed
and plays nicely on the multiple meanings of gear

all in all most excellent!

Very nice Simon!

Stunning framing and concept - especially the coke/gear mix. Very imaginative. Only small crit would be I would love to see this with some wacky flouro lights in BG or something to give it a club/druggy context rather than still life.

Excellent

This white powder did seem popular for this theme, nicely done Mate ;)

That's very very clever Simon and it works on so many levels for the meanings of speed and gear

Your lessons learnt really made me smile - mainly because they're very similar to some of mine. It's also intriguing to see the range of substances that people have used for their speed interpretations this week.

I'm amazed how many people went for the drug theme, I think between us all we must have kept Frank very busy  This is definitely one of the best ones I've seen so far though.

I can only repeat what has been said already...That is very clever Simon, nice spot, who needs 5 when you've got 4 (I have no idea).

I believe I am right in saying that fabric absorbs the light.

Crisp, clean and impactful with a nice twist.

And with a bit of research through talking to Frank!

Makes me less happy with my own effort on the theme, which is always the sign of a good shot.

I tried the white powder but just couldn't get a shot that i thought would be different to other peoples - You've nailed it with gear stick shape which makes it a standout shot

Just catching up (finally!) - I really like the street shot, I like the sense of movement, it works for me :)
Speed's a clever idea too :)

Another very clever shot Simon... That works well on multiple variations of speed.

Clever shot - well done!

Phil

Thank you

neat idea on the speed theme, several levels here and i like that.

just looking at some of your other work for your 52 and some great images. You seem to make a good job of the still life shots.

Thanks, I find still life shots easier to fit in to the theme and I can control the image a little easier in the short timeframes

A nice twist on what seems to have been a popular direction of thought this week. Gets a thumbs up from me!

And there was I thinking I had been clever with this, Oh well perhaps next week

As above, nice twist and could almost be an advert for Fifth Gear as you need drugs to watch it

I don't think they'd appreciate it somehow

Catch up time!

Thank you twice :)

all in all most excellent!

I'll be honest I hadn't realised the multiple gear link as well

Love it.

Very clever and a perfectly captured image.

Thanks

Love it. Very smart idea. Somebody thought hard for this one

Nope, it was just one of those shots that evolved, I wish I was that clever to have thought of this straight off

Very nice Simon!

Excellent

I think flouro lights would spoil the Gear Stick top impression this has.

This white powder did seem popular for this theme, nicely done Mate

Indeed it does seem popular this week

I like part two especially the dual refrence to speed.....

Terran

Cheers

clever twist and well executed

Thank you

A clever take on the theme.

:D

I believe I am right in saying that fabric absorbs the light.

The fabric I used certainly doesn't reflect light as much as the black side of the reflector, whether that's because the material absorbs the light I don't know.

A very good idea simon with a a bit of a twist. By the way you need to talk to FRANK.

Cheers

I'm sorry to have made you think less of your own shot, I'll head over and check it out in a minute, but I'm quite sure you'll have done better than you think.

I tried the white powder but just couldn't get a shot that i thought would be different to other peoples - You've nailed it with gear stick shape which makes it a standout shot

One of the reason I don't look at others shots until I finish mine, I don't want to be put off

Just catching up (finally!) - I really like the street shot, I like the sense of movement, it works for me
Speed's a clever idea too

Thank you

Clever shot - well done!

Phil

Thanks

An interesting shot. Made me look twice to see the different levels in it- speed gear etc. Very clever.

I only saw the speed when I was taking it, the gear reference to drugs only entered my conciousness when I read it on here.

very clever.. not very up in all things 'drug' related so has been interesting to see the different interpretations so far.. have to say I like this due to the added meaning with the gear stick.. expertly shot as always.. :)

Hi Simon,

I really like your street shot. The use of the ND filter works, and reminds me that I actually need to use mine.

I also agree with your learning point about how learning something new often makes you totally forget the basics. This happens to me a lot.

And it's another innovative shot for Speed. Like the duality of the drugs/car references and it was well spotted. I also like all the black in the frame. It works really well and your lighting was very good here.

Good stuff!

Ian.
