Simon's 52 in 2022

Good subject matter for the theme Simon and a good shot. I think that, for me, I prefer the colour version but I would have been torn between the bench and the headstones by themselves.

A nice set, I prefer the mono ones and I think you've chosen the right one - plenty of old things there. Nicely composed too.
 
Nice subject. The light in no2 swings it for me.
 
I didn't see your original #2, but I do think I prefer your replacement one to the B&W shot.
The reason being the shot has more headroom above the grave stone that leans against the tree. It feels less forced to me.
 
I like the new versions you are now showing, the originals have been removed so my earlier comment seems a bit lost.

I think you've chosen the correct one, the black and white adds to the scene. The picture of the hugging headstones is really good too.
 
Graveyards are difficult places to shoot as they tend to have well looked after and also very tatty areas. I prefer your original B&W, you have captured a full range on tones.
 
The colour shot by a mile for me. The taller crop, and the warmth of that shaft of light against the bench and tree, with the muted tones in the rest of the frame. It feels really nice.

Thanks Nick. I do like the colour one, but I wasn’t happy with the background, but others like you seem to be ok with it. It’s certainly got nicer light.

I get that I guess, but for me the bench/tree/stone area is strong enough to carry it. There could be dancing elephants in the background and my eyes would still be drawn to that central theme.
 
I do like the colours in the second and I might even have stepped a little further back. I don’t know what else might have crept into the shot then though.

A tough call. I like your chosen shot but the colour version has that lovely light playing on the tree and bench so I think I'm leaning towards that one.

Thanks Helen - the longer I look at them, the more I'm leaning towards the colour version too.....
 
Week 3 - Receptacle & ICM tech

I knew pretty much straight away that this week's theme gave me the chance to incorporate the ICM tech, and I sort of had in my mind the shot I wanted of water pouring into a receptacle. The outside tap and bucket idea was top of my list. However, it wasn't until I went to set it up that I realised a couple of things might scupper the shot. The drainpipe stands out too much for my liking as does the external electric socket and there's pretty bad efflouresence on the wall. None are sadly are things that I can do much about, but when processing, I think the mono version softens those a little, and hence is my preferred shot.
The second idea was water going into the sink. It needed a tight crop to get rid of other bathroom clutter and a window and I'm not sure whether I prefer the colour or mono version.

The ICM was achieved using a slow shutter speed (2s) as well as mild shaking of the camera on the tripod whilst zooming. Strangley (or not) the shaking of the camera seems relatively imperceptible compared to the zoom movement. I'm not sure whether that's down to the zoom masking the shake, or really good image stabilisation from the Fuji X-S10 :LOL:

Either way, I'm glad to get my first ever intentional ICM out of the way!

I think the B&W presentation was a good way to get past the efflorescence. A very successful shot for both tech and theme.
 
Nice one - ticked the boxes and one off your Bucket List :naughty:
 
Don't really like the sink shots, especially the first one, however I do like the bucket ones and IMHO the colour one seems to have a lot more impact while the drain pipe adds rather than detracts from the image.

Thanks Martin. The sink shots certainly don't work as well, and the water running from the tap is almost invisible, but included here for completeness to show differing attempts.

I find it difficult with “rogue” objects (the drainpipe in this instance) to know whether they enhance or detract from images. From feedback on past images sometimes it seems they do, sometimes it seems they don’t - appears to be quite subjective. If this hadn't been n ICM shot, I might have attempted to clone it out.
 
I think that you've chose the right one Simon, good tech shot.
 
Image one for me Simon, converting to B&W has eased the distraction of the air brick and muted the impact of the waste pipe a little bit. If I were to be really picky the zoom shift centre would look better (imho) centred on the water stream, plus the angle the water is flowing from the tap looks a bit odd to my failing eyesight, it may be better of it were vertical, but that a me thing as I'm the guy who goes around using rack of eye ... twist of gob to straightening hanging pictures.;)

Thanks Duncan - Good advice for future attempts. I have to say I'm also usually obsessive about verticals and horizontals - my family think I'm bonkers, so not quite sure what happened here! :LOL:
 
Nice, it's not easy getting a zoon burst that clean. Definitely a receptacle to. If I had any criticism it would be the hardware on the wall, a the pot against a clean brick background would have been smoother maybe. Having said that, I guess it's more 'real' for their inclusion.
 
I like the Bucket shots, not sure which on I prefer though, they have an element of speed about them similar to when the Millennium Falcon goes into Hyperspace :) :exit:

Thanks Nick - I agree about the hardware, but there was nothing I could do about it really.

You chose the right shot out of the series.
Good idea for the ICM.
