weekly SimonB 52 for 2022 - Week 52 - Showcase

I like the first tree image, the mono PP works very well and gives it/enhances a moody feel.

I like the leading lines of the path through the trees and the natural leafy vignette.

I also like the very moody B&W. I think the lighter patch to the left of the tree slightly draws my eye away from the tree. It fascinates me that you get clumps of trees like this. I suppose it's due to farmers making their fields bigger. Both fit the theme perfectly.

The horrid day has created a nice moody image. Definitely works with the mono processing.

Mono for me too, can't beat a moody sky in B&W.

Thanks for the comments everyone, it really helps.

Just on holiday this week in the Isle of Man, which always makes taking part in this challenge difficult given that I’m away from my computer. So I was trying to think of a suitable picture to take that would meet the theme. Thankfully I remembered that there is a reservoir not to far away.

This is Sulby reservoir that feeds the north end of the island and provides hydro electric power as well. The picture was taken from my drone which is always fun to use and allows me plenty of time to put the camera where I feel it might work best. The picture is of an overflow hole, I thought it would be wise not to venture down this hole as I may never see the drone again!

I’ve also included a wide shot of the reservoir just to show the size of it, it is apparently the islands largest reservoir.

That's a cool shot Simon, thanks for the info and the context shot. Makes for a complete story.

I stared at this for a while wondering what it was but the second shot put it into place. Nicely done.

An interesting and novel shot for the theme. Such a shame the water level wasn't higher so the overflow was in operation, but we can't hold you responsible for that!

Well that's a different and very effective take on the theme.
Well droned, so to speak.

That's a great image. Unusual but effective composition and the light and texture on the water is really nice.

Pretty cool images :)

That's the most interesting drone shot I've seen recently. It makes a cracking image.

Thanks!

Ha that's exactly why I put the second shot in!

I know that would have great!

A skill I have picked up from moaning on a daily basis! :ROFLMAO:

Thanks very much!

Pretty cool images :)

Cheers!

I love this - colours and composition work really well. Good to see the wider shot too.

Thanks very much, I'll put up a picture closer to the hole!

Thats very neat Simon. Nicely flown!

Thanks!

Thanks, I was glad I remembered as I was struggling for ideas.

Thats one big hole. Very nice image.

Massive!

That's a great shot and well done for keeping up the challenge while away on holiday.

Cheers! This week's theme is proving to be time-sensitive, a shoehorn may be required!

Looks like I've managed to nip this picture in before the next theme is announced, it's been a busy week for me. This picture was taken on my phone so the quality is lacking somewhat but a few tweaks in Lightroom have improved it a bit. This was taken from Crosby beach where I just managed to capture the container ship roughly where I wanted it ( it was too late for me to line it up with the sun). I thought the wind farm added a bit of interest to the picture too.

Classic sunset Simon.
Boat and wind farm add distant detail.

I love the depth in that, and the light is beautiful. As tiny as they are in the frame, the boat and the turbines really add something.

There's a lot to like about this shot - the colours, the reflections, the clouds... and it all feels like you're there looking out.

I used to do lots of windsurfing at Crosby Marina many years ago. No wind turbines then :) Happy days.

Lovely light and reflection on the water.

Thanks for the comments everyone, looks like its hit the mark!

I had a couple of ideas for this week's theme as there are a couple of racetracks not too far from me. One track had drifting events on which I thought would be great to try and catch. However, being the tight person I am, I wasn't willing to spend the money to spectate! So instead I wandered over to Crosby Marina today to hopefully see some watersports.

Thanks to @Bebop for the inspiration this chap (lets call him Rod) in a fairly large boat was leaning over loads to control this craft. It was also a good excuse to put my new zoom lens into practice and it was certainly useful here!

I am sailing

Happy to have inspired you ha ha! You've nicely captured 'Rod'. I like the negative space on the left. There does appear to be a little bit of a light halo around Rod - did you maybe raise the shadows here, or is it his Ready Brek glowing? Or is it just the sun on the water?

It really looks like somewhere hot and sunny, not the Crosby Marina I remember. I vaguely remember losing the tip of my board to those rocks on the edge, though I don't think there was so much vegetation 30 years ago!

I remember the aching belly muscles from that sort of exercise! And the backache after a couple of hours windsurfing!

Shot certainly fits the week's theme.

Great image. My son in law is a sailing fanatic but he and my daughter live over 200 miles away so I couldn't get a chance to take a shot of him.

Sunrise/Sunset - wonderfully exposed shot Simon, I like the ship and the wind turbines on the horizon
Sport(s) - another great shot, gives the impression of movement and the struggle to keep the boat from capsizing

Nice shot Simon!

Drifting at Three Sisters? I was tempted but not at £15. I opted for Aintree motorcycle racing at £10 - and plus I'd never been there before.

I found the other pictures quick enough. This was as close as I dared fly into the hole as I didn't want to lose the drone or risk causing issues for the reservoir!

I thought this was some sort of rivet on a piece of leather at first glance.

Really interesting shot. and the viewpoint is great.

That's a great shot anyway, and even better when I read that you'd managed this on a phone.

Well timed and composed - you've captured the essence of this sport.

That's really nice! At this size Rod's head gets a little lost where it meets the shoreline, but bigger on Flickr, the issue goes away. I love the body position.
