Sigma EF-530 Woes

My usually-reliable Sigma EF-530 Super flashgun caused me a little grief tonight. For some reason, the flashgun doesn't seem to want to communicate with the camera. In its normal auto mode, the flash will only fire at full output, leading to hugely over-exposed shots. It also won't auto-zoom with the lens like it used to.

I managed to continue the shoot in fully-manual mode, guessing at appropriate settings, and for the most part it worked ok, although I missed a few shots because I was on the wrong setting.

Has anyone had this problem before? Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

Could be dodgy contacts. Flash not seated properly? Dirty contacts?

As far as I can tell it's seated properly, and the contacts aren't dirty (although just so I know, what's the recommended method of cleaning them?). Also, it behaved identically on two different cameras.

An additional point that I neglected to mention was that the AF-assist lamp was also not working. Don't know if that's indicative of anything...

Have you tried new batteries, nearly flat batteries can cause alsorts of wierd problems, give them a go and eliminate the batteries as the problem.

Already tried that I'm afraid Dave - I'm getting identical issues on two different sets of batteries, including one brand new straight-out-of-the-packet set of non-rechargables.
