Their ceramic clear filter is supposed to be something else - seen a video of someone hitting it with a hammer a few times and it still didn't break - normal glass one went first tap[emoji33]

I was referring to IQ. Putting UV filters on any lens degrades the IQ to a degree, but the longer the focal length the worse affect it has. A lens such as this will have a very noticeable affect on IQ with a (useless) UV filter attached.

Are there _any_ filters worth putting on the lens which won't degrade performance, in order to protect it ?

Also, if anyone could provide me with some settings out of the box for BIF/Planes, such as OS 1 or 2 setting etc. I'd be very grateful.

No.

Just use the hood.

Do you have the dock?
If not settings 1 & 2 do nothing as they are programmable via dock only.
Dynamic OS and fast focus are good settings for me at least.

Os1 and os2 will work out of the box.
It's C1 and C2 that need the dock to customise.

Any recommendations on a good strap please? Is the Black Rapid Sport any good?
The Black Rapid strap is perfect for these lenses, the RS-7 is the one I used with the C and now use with the Sport. Not cheap but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for and they are worth the £'s.

Thanks, do you know if the Sport strap comes in different materials as camera king are selling one entitled ..........Black Rapid RS-Sport Ballistic Nylon Camera Strap Bomb-Proof Nylon Webbing

I don't know the answer to that, sorry. As far as I knew there is only one but I could be wrong - try their website as it may say on there.

It's the heaviest lens I've ever bought too, though to be fair I don't really notice much of a difference between the weight of this and the mk1 canon 100-400 so it's ok. Got my RS-7 Sport Strap coming today. Another thing I noticed is that the barrel can be rotated fully in one turn, I had read a lot of people saying you need to turn it twice to fully rotate.

Thanks Chris, Setting it up on the dock helped. But I have a feeling im really going to enjoy using this lens.

Great shots. What settings do you use for bif shots?

Hi Robert lens wise Dynamic OS and Focus priority adjusted through the dock, Cam wise F8, ISO as high as i need it for a decent shutter speed i shoot with a 7d mark11 so i get 60 odd focus points at 600mm along with the auto tracking feature once you have locked on with centre focus point. Case 3 setting.

A great collection of shots Mark, looking very good indeed.

Mine turned up late this afternoon along with the dock, couldn't resist having a try before updating lens. Luckily a squirrel popped into our garden to allow me a few grab shots.

Lens seems very nicely made, just need to get used to it and tuned. Also, nice to have the extra reach over a 300mm prime and 1.4TC on FF.

Hi all,

I installed the dock tonight, expecting to upgrade the firmware on my lens but it says I already have the latest firmware (v1.02) is that correct? If so then my next question is which customisations shouldI use for an airshow?

I've only just got mine. The firmware on mine is also 1.02. I changed the IS to Dynamic.
Haven't had the chance to test it apart from some shots in the garden

I've never heard of 'dynamic IS', I have the sport version of this lens and can't see a 'dynamic' selection switch, or is it just for the 'C' version I wonder ?

Well a! Bit disappointed yesterday .not sure if it was user error or lens, but I was trying to track a peregrine over the sea, I was on spot focus, and the sea was a bit choppy but bird was quite close ,so would have thought that it should have locked on quite easy, but it didn't, in fact the lens locked up a few times, and had to be either turned off or pointed at something that it could focus on quite easy, raining all day today so not been able to get out to try some different settings..

Never heard of this with the Siggy. Are the contacts on the camera clean? Have you got the dock and tuned the lens to its fastest setting (though I found its normal setting very fast and accurate straight out the box)? I'm not a bird man but I managed some great BIF shots straight out the box with my 6d with my first attempts (and I'm no expert in birding!)

PS - I know I'm stating the obvious, but the camera was on AI Servo wasn't it?

Yes camera was set to continuous focus, there's no issues with speed of the lens it's the ability to catch subject in messy background s that seem to be the problem, not sure if it's the lens settings or camera? I had no problem with it tracking swifts in clear sky's. Thanks.

What camera is it? It's not a problem for my lens and locking / tracking would be a camera issue anyway?

D7200 ,also thinking that it's camera. Perhaps I'm asking too much from camera trying to track a fast flying bird over messy background,s..

The d7200 should be ok?

I took mine back to LCE in Lincoln for a similar fault and exchanged it. It would randomly stop focusing altogether and I had to manually focus or turn it off before the the AF would kick in. The first time it did it I put it down to user error, then over the weekend before its return, it did it 4 times

LCE, amongst other things, first said it could be the camera, I politely said I didn't think it was :D and eventually got an exchange because it was still under 30 days old.

New one has been good so far :)

Why do they get so defensive? It could be Electro-Magnetic Pulses or even Sunspots :)

You have this camera that works with all your lenses and then, you get a new 'device' and all of a sudden something doesn't work. Ah, must be the old device ....

Until I try again I'm putting it down to user error, the annoying thing is I left dock at home, I'm away at the moment, so cannot try different settings on lens. I have altered the camera settings, still on spot focus, AFC , I have extended the time that the camera takes to focus longer when tracking a subject. Before it refocuses .
