SIGMA 120-300mm D 2.8 APO DG HSM EX

This is an excellent lens, heavy brute but very sharp, some seem to suffer from front focus issues.

A average price is around £1000 to £1200 for the DG in good condition, the non DG version is cheaper.
Having said that a few have sold for around £900 on ebay before

I have one, it is sharp, takes the 1.4 TC well, easy to use and I don`t find it heavy.

If you read all the tripe about Sigma lenses on the net forums you would never buy a Sigma lens and they would never sell one.

It is OK with the 1.4tc on.

F8 at full whack.

Don`t know sorry,I use the Sigma 1.4 with it.

just got one dg version with a hoya uv filter on it looking forward to getting it:)

Well done....anyone else looking at this thread also needs to be aware that the non-DG version comes with the smaller tripod collar which can't double as a carry handle. The DG has the TS-41 collar which is perfect for such, considering the weight!

Seems that way then...google for images of the DG version and you'll see the difference. A replacement TS-41 will set you back a fair bit, but it could prevent you dropping the beast!

It is a fantastic lens, I have the non DG version with the smaller tripod mount.
It works well with a sigma 1.4TC (or canon) , not as well as with a 2.0TC, not sure about the kenko 1.4TC, but they are well regarded.

Just finishing processing a few images I took this afternoon with the 120-300 F2.8, here's one

I had a copy of the Sigma 300 prime and it wouldn't autofocus with the Kenko converter. You'll need to get a Sigma converter. The Canon converters work if you are a Canon shooter.

looks very sharp to me should be here tomorrow,

will try it with the kenko pro 300 dgx tomorrow and see if it works.

While we are on the subject of Sigma lenses, anyone had any experience with the sigma 300mm 2.8? interested in this lens. Would go for the 120-300 but I already have a canon 70-200 2.8, and there is no way that lens is going!
Cheers

No one :(

think i need to find something lighter open to offers

Can anyone shed light on a suitable backpack that will take this lens attached to a Nikon body with battery grip and still be within the weight and dimension limits for airport hand luggage?

Thanks

i imagine youll need something in the lowepro 400 size?

my slingshot 300 takes the 120-300 width ways but without body attached..

(since the pic was taken the 120-300 now sits at the bottom, the 70-200 in the middle now to accomodate the gripped 20D/1D)

Great results after I adjusted the micro-adjustment on the canon body. Worked perfectly well on the 5D2. the front focussing was an issue but now is superfine.

The lens is a heavy beast but for the money, it is a great lens. It has paid for itself in sold images after only 15 months.

The one I own is the APO DG version I use it on a Giotto monopod with the head rotated round so the lens is in the portrait format. But if I want landscape I can just loosen the tripod collar and rotate through 90 degress to give me Landscape.

All in all I would recomend the lens but it is a tad heavy. If I could justify the prime lens, I would go for it but the zoom function on the 120-300 is a great facillity and also maitaining the F2.8 aperture throughout.

No other manufacturer that I am aware of offers anything similar.
