Yes
Allow me to begin by stating what i am currently using:
Canon 550D
Canon Efs 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS
Canon Ef 17-40mm F4 L USM
Canon Ef 50mm F1.8 II

Since i like to take landscape photos i'm thinking of buying a wide angle lens. The 17-40mm, i feel, just isn't wide enough on an Aps-C camera like mine.

I've more or less narrowed down my choices to either of the above mentioned two and would like everyones opinion on which i should get.

As i understand the Sigma has some Quality Assurance issues and arguably less sharper than the Canon but it is cheaper. So it seems as if the price saving is balanced by these issues.

On the otherhand the Canon is more expensive but i don't have to deal with (esp the QA) the issues.

Any help is much appreciated. Just have to mention that i am willing to trade off the 17-40mm just to save money.

I've owned the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 and I was dissapointed at the level of sharpness. When compared to my Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro it was quite soft all over the frame. The Canon gets rave reviews everywhere, if you have the money get that. If you want to save a few pounds the next best lens is the Tokina 12-24mm F4

Would you recommend that i trade-in my 17-40mm (since its nowhere wide enough) to get the Canon 10-20mm?

Oh and don't worry about Sigma QC issues, it's a big myth. Canon has as many QC issues with its lens. Google the following... Canon 10-22 "broke in half"

Would I trade in a 17-40 for a 10-22, I'm not sure I would. But I like a general walk around rather than an ultra wide

I hope so... Getting a replacement isnt exactly practical where im from.

Hi

I've the Sigma 10-20mm and am very pleased with it and readily recommend it.

When I was looking, for me, for what I use it, I couldn't justify the extra expense of the Canon and I've not been disapppinted.

TBF lenses just don't break for no reason - if you drop it I'm not surprised it breaks.

its a consumer lens remember, not a pro grade L

If i were to get the Canon 10-22, that would probably mean i would be trading in my Canon 17-40. Fortunately i do have the budget to get the Sigma tho. So, should i trade in?

Did you experience any of the QC issues that i keep on reading? I must admit the Sigma sounds good but i am worried about it.

Lol that's not really a QC issue, treat a lens line that and it'll always break somewhere, always at the weakest point.

I've known of a few different types of lenses to break between the barrel and focus rings in my time.

UWAs can be particularly prone to this as the barrels don't recess far into the back of the lens.

Looking to get a wide angle but thinking about going the whole hog and getting the Sigma 8-16 for the option of some more striking effects in addition to just getting more in. Any reason why this is not a more popular choice apart from the lack of filter (I have no problem with this) as I have seen some stunning shots with the 8-16

No no problems at all ...

how are you finding the sigma?
im really interested in getting a UWA to play around with,
and with my budget of about £300 it looks like its got to be a sigma

The Sigma is good if you can get a decent one. The Canon is better regardless so get that if you can afford it.

As for Sigma's quality control issues, sorry but there's no smoke without fire and you don't hear so much on this subject for no reason. The variability of their products is a farce to be honest. I've had two Sigma lenses and had problems with both. One I bought brand new and it needed calibration straight out of the box - utterly unacceptable IMO. Never had a problem with any of my Canon lenses and afraid I won't be going near Sigma again.

Personally I'd see if you can get the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for around £300, or the 12-24. Both better lenses IMO.

The Sigma 10-20 has got more of a cult following as it was "cheap" and hit a saturation point. It's good but not as good as the Tokinas IMO (and the Tokinas are proper "L" grade builds, unlike the Sigma (and Canon).

I'm stuck with the same dilemma of going for canon or sigma. I have the "pennies" for the Canon but I'm still not sure if I should go the extra pounds for a Canon. Probably need to search more threads!

Loads on here about these two! The Canon is arguably the best, I have one for my 50d and it's a great lens, pin sharp.

The Sigma is prone to copy variations and some have center ing issues, but there are many happy owners out there.

Guess it depends how much you want to spend but these days the canon isn't that much more than the Sigma is it?

Yes, I stumbled upon the 10-18 but it still has not reached much people and hence most of the websites have previews and not reviews of it. Looks good from the specifications and benchmark tests and is priced at 300. Will have to wait for it

The sigma is an amazing lens. The majority of my work has been done with it and a 550d. I have now upgraded to full frame so nolonger use either but together they are a fantastic combo. My friend had the 8-16 which is great but almost too wide and ended up trading for the 10-20 so he could use filters without having to spend as much again on the holder! If you want to see what this combo is capable of check my website. 99% of it done with that setup. www.andrew-musgrave.squarespace.com

id consider the 8-16, you kinda always want to go wider and have more perspective distortion.
cheapo option is a 235degree fisheye lens for your phone, crazy wide fun (but not quality)

i have the 10-20 sigma and its ok, not the sharpest lens but thats normal with ultrawide, and dxo distortion correction softens the image slightly, but i love using it

I have the 10-22 canon for my crop. Bought it over the sigma as when I tried both together the sigma seemed longer to gain focus, noticeably slower.

I have canon and love it so much that I can't part with it even if I upgraded to 6D. I will have a hard time to replace it. New 16-35 looks great but so much money...
You can get Canon 10-22 for not much more then 300 on e-bay.

Much as I love my 10-22, I've reluctantly put it up for sale as I'm moving to FF and want to get something equivalent for that. Initial intention was the 17-40 but now the new 16-35 f/4L IS is looking interesting.

That's what I was about to say I went for the 11-16 it's an amazing lens and I haven't heard of any issues with bad copies like the sigma

Holy thread from the dead!
