I've been having problems since I started buying and using a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM lens when I bought a few years ago.

When I bought it I didn't use it much because I thought there was something wrong with the lens focussing on the left hand side of all my photos. They all soft.

I decided to email Sigma(UK) about it. They said they couldn't do anything with it, so they sent it to Hong Kong. They adjusted the lens a bit and sent it back... I tried it and it still wasn't up to my expectations.

I didn't use it for a while, and I eventually took it to a local shop. He had it for a week and he said there was nothing wrong with it. He said it was sharp when placed on a tripod.
But I beg to differ.

Anyway, I've decided to use it more often.

My question is. How can I use it more?
I always use the centre AF point on the camera and have it in P all the time with the occasional AV mode selected.

Hi ......?

Sorry to hear about your problem with this lens.

I bought this lens earlier this year, and I can't fault it. The results are very respectable, irrespective of what mode its used in.

In my case, its used with an EOS 7D.

hi can you post some photos taken with it i own 1 and love it i do hear the sigmas are very hit and miss if you get a good or bad one, i use mine for some landscape snaps and car shows

Here is a photo. Sadly its the only one that shows the 'soft' or out of focus. This I think is before I sent it to Sigma(UK).

I'll post more if I find any :)

Have you taken some more shots since you had it checked and the shop said it was fine - did you look at their shots taken ?

If you had it back to Sigma and they sent it for repair, why didn't you return it / contact them again if you still weren't happy with it ?

No I don't have any photos. I haven't been using it much (blame the new lens I bought lol).

The guy deleted the photos so no.

I'll have to go any take some more photos today

I would, if the shop says the lens is fine, set it up on a tripod and try to replicate their shots to check...

If the shop is local and your not getting the shots you feel is right, pop back to them and get them to check it again and show you the results ...

what was the camera settings i cant see any exif data as its photo bucket try taking a shot at f11 and say f8 and at say 10mm 15mm and 20mm take them on a tripod so it will cut down on hand shake, here is 1 of mine taken hand held at f11/10mm/iso 160 ,

Camera settings

focal length 10mm

f/5.6
1/60
ISO 200
Matrix setting
central af point selected
P mode selected

as said try it at f8 and f11 at 10/15/20 mm and see if it is any better for you mind use a tripod if you have one so it cuts down on camera shake

I'll try it Hoochy1 and I'll post the results. Might put them on my flickr instead of Photobucket.

I went out yesterday morning. Used my tripod all the time. But the sky was a little dark. Mist everywhere and the the clouds weren't that great. So I deleted all 70 photos.

I was actually thinking that I should have stayed with Canon lenses and bought the 10-22mm.

When it's right, the Sigma is a good lens - no doubt about that. No point in posting duff images taken before it was allegedly fixed, but either way, if you're not happy with it, the obvious solution is to have Sigma UK sort it out. Which they will, even if you have to pay - and it'll be worth it.

Was the lens originally purchased in the UK, or is it a grey import? That's the only reason I can think of for the lens going to Hong Kong. It's one of the risks of buying greys.

Edit: just seen your new test shots. Definitely summat wrong on the LH side.

I bought the lens from a place from Hong Kong. I realise it was a huge mistake now.

I'll only buy equipment from the UK!!

yip there is def a problem from just off center to the left hand side it seems to get a bit better at f11 but its way out from what it should be now here is the thing they had a go at trying to fix it the first time (or so they say) is it worth sending it off again when you count what it will cost postage and the cost of the repair and it may be the same 2nd time around ?it may be better to write the lens off and buy a 2nd hand known good 1

To be honest I don't know if I want to send it off again and wait a few weeks for it back. I'm off to Scotland a week on saturday, so I'll want it then.

I'll think about it more after I come back. I don't know which lens I would go for and I would buy a canon 10-22mm if people recommended it.

yea the canon lens is very sharp but cost more than the sigma but a good sigma wont be that far off the canon lens it all comes down to what your budget is ,oh and enjoy scotland

If I decide to sell the lens, maybe through eBay, how much should I get for it if I say something about the focussing?

Or should I go through a Trade in shop online and see what they charge for taking it off me?

OR
Should I email Sigma(UK) and see what they can do about it?
Surely they won't replace the lens for a new one?

I could go for the Canon wide angle!!!! But would the lens be compatible with lets say the Canon 5D Mk III ??

10-22 is an EF-S lens, that means it will not work on the front of a full frame camera (5D, 6D, 1D etc).

Not a problem because 10mm on a crop (xxxD, xxD and 7D cameras) has the same field of view as 16mm on a full frame.

But the Sigma will be able to fit, lets say the 5D?

When I sent the lens off it cost me £37.99 and had the following done to it;

Adjust Optic
Reset, Check & Test

Adjusted 4th Group lens unit

I presume this was back to Sigma?

As it's been such a long time since you had it to them, you're probably going to have to bite the bullet and pay again...

I'd get it back to them, explain your problems and have them look at it, then I would strongly recommend you test it when it's back and return it if you're still not happy. If everything is okay, then use it, stop worrying about trying to upgrade something you've not used and enjoy the lens...

good luck with it i hope they sort it for you
