Show us yer film shots then!

Had another go at the shots from last week... hard to get anything out of the slides, they're just so dark, but as it was so hard to arrange a day away shooting, I sort of feel I aught to try and get something out of it...

Problem is boosting contrast means burning skies. If you were in a darkroom you'd dodge the skies and allow the rest to come through right?

(oops, sorry Mark, did not check your tick box :( )

So, cheat a bit... drop a neutral gradient filter over the sky and get playing :D

Problem is, the slides were so dark, there's no real range left in the shadows - as soon as you start pushing them a bit, they just turn into noise.

This, believe it or not, was what I started with !

I'd lost the tally-sheet I keep, where I record the number of films I'd done in a given mix of the E-6, and just guessed. Then when I worked out how many i'd really done, the chemicals were depleted by a good 7 more rolls - worth maybe another 45 seconds in the first developer, or a good stop and a half under :(

I wondered what you put then deleted is all... thought I was in trouble for posting edits of your pics.

Having spent a few years "in training" bringing something from nothing with deep space imaging I find this sort of manipulation rather easy... almost instinctive.

Try splitting to CMYK, boost contrast of the K layer then recombine and kick up the colour level a bit. There are all sorts of way to bring up images like this...

Naahh - i'd just started waffling about how crepe the original slides were, and realised that a quick shot of one explained far more than all the waffle did. So - I deleted the waffle quickly, and resized a scan down to show you ;)

All things considered, I'm going to have to take my lumps on these ones I reckon, and just accept that it was bad weather, bad choice of film, bad processing and all-round rubbish end result. Still - when I've saved up enough to get up there again, now i've got a couple of locations scoped out :)

Well, they are eminently savable you know.

I've just spent half a hour wading through the scanner software manual (I think trying the original german version would probably have made more sense tbh!) and there's a couple of settings for getting a bit more out of over-dark highly contrasted media, so I may just shelve working on these versions, and spend a miserable next rainy day waiting for the scanner to chug out another attempt. In all honesty, and this isn't a dummy spit, it's being realistic about the shots - I don't think that they're worth faffing about with any more in CS5 - if I AM going to spend some time re-working them, then I'd rather invest the time in making the scanner do a better job in the first place, which hopefully will help anything I make a rick of in the future

The second attempts I posted were in fact, pretty close to what I remember it looked like, and also better than I managed to get while shooting with the digital - it was just a crepe day - shame that it might have been my only chance to get up there for another few months :(

Well I just grabbed one of the cheapo scanners from Aldi today just to try out and see if I could scan myself, now I'm hooked.
Scanned about 5GB so far, and haven't touched the older negs or slides.

So here's a couple of near 20 yr old shots I never got around to printing (found a whole folder of nearly all un printed negs, I just developed the film and filed the negs!)
If I remember rightly, Nikon FM, Nikkor 50mm, and FP4 pushed to 400 cos I liked grain lol.

Late brother and his girlfriend at the time.

What he said - bet you were delighted to find that folder

I knew the folder was there, I just didnt realise I hadn't printed a lot of the negs in there, and yes the whole family are over the moon.
I wonder what joys the old margarine tub full of older negs holds?

It will have to wait for another day though, my eyes are on stalks after doing that lot yesterday lol..

From a Zenit 11 and Kodachrome 200 I believe.

Fear not, if you go to Adjustments and then Shadows/Highlights in PhotogramShoppe it should allow you much more flexibility with tweaking. On my version it isn't an adjustment layer which is a pain but you could always do it on a duplicate layer if you so wanted. I hope it works (I shall look like quite the tool otherwise :bonk:).

I'll keep it in mind, and give it a go, once I've had another go with the scanner - I think that it's more about me getting a decent source image to work with than anything, but I've certainly had some success with hte shadows/highlights control before:thumbs: Another trick I've used, is to use CS4's open as... command, to open the scanned file using the camera raw option. Gives access to all the tweakey things you get with a RAW digital file, in a nice non-destructive way - just the thing when you're messing about like I am with this shot.

Some from my roll of Kodachrome i had back yesterday. Lots more to scan in after half term.

Just some shots I like and deliberately didn't worry about the shadows for darkness to frame the subject:-

Lovely pastel colours on my monitor.

Great pictures of your grand daughter Brian. She looks like she was having fun.

I do, however, think its a bit extreme to call her 'Canon 28mm f2.8 Fdn'. I know you like photography but could you not have gone for something simpler, Leica for example.:D

Damn! can anyone lend me a full stop or comma :bonk:......but I call her Lolapop and she gets annoyed and says "No! I'm Lola Cherry".

My grand children have giving my hobby a shot in the photographic arm, as I was going through a long phase of "been there done it and I'm bored", which has now led to LBA and buying/using SLR's that I missed in the past.

2nd one is excellent. Got a really moody feel to it. Great image.

Yep, the second shot is great. I love the starkness of the tree against the misty background. One to get printed big methinks.

#2 for me too... but can;t help thinking a few yards back and a zoom in to bring the background up a bit closer maybe?

Got to leave something for next time, haven't I

And I suppose it wouldn't be a trip to the lakes without the boats

another nice image, if a tad dark

Excellent shot Mark. I like the original but the edit is an improvement.

Like your shot as well Chris, as you say 'dirty & grainy' works well for this scene.

Andy

Here's a few from Brittany in August. All taken on a Ross Ensign 16-20 with a Rosstar 75mm f4.5 on Fuji Superia ASA 200.

A mistake. I forgot I was using colour film and put a yellow filter on. Converted to b&w it looks ok, very happy with how much more contrasty it turned out.
