I know I've messed about and put a frame on it and a title and a sepia tint but I wanted it to look like an old postcard.
Ross Ensign 16-20 on Kodak ASA 400 b&w.

erm is it my eyes or does this shot have uneven development

Nah, I don't have the diffuser panel for ma scanner so all my scans look that way...

Some HP5, rated at 200 and guesstimated the dev at 8mins in promicol.

I think I would prefer it sans-sepia and sans-border personally :)

Looks a little like you've got some more of that pink from the gravestone border, rather than sepia tint to me, Andy... There's also a bit of a halo around the headland, if i'm being picky. It does have the right vibe for a old postcard though!.

A few old ones I found when digging out my old film kit, years out of date film. D&S at tesco.

All shot on a MTL5B with Kodak CN400.

Seems strange considering thats where my set were from only half an hour before, 10 years aparts mind.

LOL.
I saw yours and I thought "I have some beach shots like that......"
I didn't recognise yours as Portabello mind you. Must have been subliminal.

You know Andy. I am not a fan of the tint here. The photograph itself is great, but the tint does not work for me. It also looks like it has some digital sharpening as opposed to letting the grain do its job. I do like the border and title.

Thanks for the comments guys.

BY I think the halo is because the headland was lit by a beam of sunlight but the rest of the image was under cloud, its on the neg so nothing to to with processing. As to the pink, well I've just printed it on A4 and you're right.

Thanks Javier, in the print it doesn't have as obvious a tint but I think I will go back to the original and try a more natural look.

Cheers

Andy

Sam, I agree with Javier, great image.

not a very interesting shot, but just sharing a frame of cross processed velvia 100f taken a while ago.

RIP and condolences.

OK I've had a re-think and this, apart from a straighten and a tiny levels tweak, is virtually straight from the disc.

I have to say that overall I prefer it. I think I'm still using to many digital thought processes and not allowing the film/lens/camera to do its work.

Andy

All I know is that I sat there staring at this image for quite a few minutes, so this tells me that I like it :)

I much prefer this version also...

Definitely prefer it this way Andy

One thing i've found, if you have an image that you feel needs a gentle sharpening, rather than using the usual unsharp mask tools in photoshop, a High-Pass filter layer overlay sharpens the image up without over-emphasising the grain structure. Just one example of differing processes for the 2 media :)

Thanks BY nice tip.

Andy

Just got a film back today from Tesco. Got speaking to the lad and asked him to do a decent job on them for me. He actually did !!! Scanned them at higher res than normal creating 2mb files.....

#1 I'd want to lose the house and the distracting sky at the top in a crop.

#4 is great, though. Lovely tonal range.

1 tighter crop

I had tried the tighter crop but Helen wasn't keen.

Respectfully, I'd have to disagree with her :)

She said "Why do you have to do such a tight crop" which I took to mean she didn't like the crop BUT now she says she likes it so we are all in agreement :)

Is posting photos I took in the early 90s cheating on this thread? :suspect:

I did only get round to scanning them recently, if that's any defence.

As some of you might know, I've been doing a long term project recording the construction of Renzo Piano's Shard of Glass building at London Bridge since last year. It's going to be the tallest building in western Europe when it's completed in 2012.

I've had a few photos published in a couple of architectural journals, on the architects' web site and for publicity for some of the sub-contractors as a result.

Most of it has been digital, but I did think I wanted to get some 'real' photographs along the way. :)

Here's a few behind-the-times shots from June 23rd, taken with my Canon A-1, using Ilford FP4+. It took a while to get them developed and scanned. There's another colour batch in the can but not yet developed.

There's a few more film shots over the couple of pages following this in my Shard Gallery.
