***Who says you can't do flowers in black and white?**

........as long as you enjoy it then why not......in my experience it's very difficult to get a very good B/W shot that's not boring.

I am pretty sure you meant a good ''flower'' black and white and I would have to agree. I have seen a bed or field of flowers done in black and white that look great, but have yet to see a single flower in black and white that blows me away.

Well I meant you have to have more of the "eye" or skill or whatever you want to call it, to get excellent b/w shots. Many people take shots in B/W and think that's it, but the skilful guys can do high or low key and can produce shots with excellent varying tones from white to black if needed and have the "eye" for the subject to start with and knowing it's not going to be in colour.

Then I apologize. I miss understood what you said.

I'm glad this b/w thing is sorted cos I could feel a long and truncated boring finger wagging paragraph starting to take shape in my finger ends.....and nobody needs that...

If anybody is in any doubt about the validity of b/w flowers, they should take a look at Irving Penn and Robert Mapplethorpes work, cos those two are complete Gods of B/W still life on film.

anyway........here's a fat bloke in a bikini on kodachrome.....

Hey Jox. When did you take my picture ?

Fistral beach, Newquay, Cornwall, England..

He just came running down the dunes, dipped his toe in the water, *brrrrrrrr*, and ran back up the beach....:cuckoo:

Ah, Fistral, that brings back memories. Used to work for a company that had a couple of branch offices down in Devon/Cornwall, and once a month I'd be sent down there - always arranged to go down for the thurs/friday and stayed over for weekend somewhere along that coast.

I just realised I miss-read your question jg....

I do not believe you have "JANE" and the red rose of Lancashire tattooed on your right forearm JG.....can't say the same about the bikini though......

I could do once a month......no problemo, s'bit of a ride though

Yep took a quick look and Penn's work had very few B/W flowers but Mapplethorpe had many.......and they were all boring ;)

*Yawn*

Did I miss something? Photography seems to have suddenly turned into something objective almost over night. Weird. Please send me details in how one can obtain black and white brilliance so I can avoid any further mistakes.

Sorry it's probably my fault...the important thing is to enjoy what you are doing and would just add:- for action shots using B/w or colour is less important and for any shot, it is always the end result that counts so enhancing in the darkroom or in photoshop is OK IMO.

This guy has admitted enhancing his shots in the darkroom or Photoshop.

You can tell and I think they're the lesser for it. Like the models on the front of women's magazines who've had every last bit of character or personality removed by photoshop they become characatures of the things they represent, idealised to the point of cliche.

For me the flaws in things are what gives them their reality. Revealing those things you hadn't noticed is what photography does best. Just an opinion, like.

Well lets face it, people are now going around taking shots with mobile phones so a shot has to be better than a Joe public "tourist" shot, and so many static shots have all been done before, it's difficult finding something new.

Sorry if this burst the bubble, but this is a show us your film shots thread, if this exchange of views could be taken to its own thread so much the better.

Thank you all.

Here we go then, the first from a roll of Fuji Velvia 400 from a Seth Lakeman gig at the Hard Rock Cafe last night. Nikon F3 and a Nikon E Series 50mm f1.8 and no flash. I can now see why everyone rates the F3 its a brilliant bit of kit. More to follow.

This is true and it is one of the reasons I like street photography.

And seeing your street shots is one of the reasons I like street photography, although I still haven't got over the fear of being spotted....

Here's a B&W :naughty:. I don't think anyone should get upset about excalibur2's opinion; he's entitled to it.
Delta 3200 @ 1600 in D76. Mamiya c330 pro F

Now thats lovely, in so many ways.

Andy

Really nice tones Rick, what's going on in the bottom left corner?

Thanks guys.
Are you talking about the light leak or the scrunched up t-shirt?

:lol: The light leak, that would be it. Still a great shot though.

ah yeah, i'm not sure how it happened. I think I loaded the reel in the tank incorrectly as it appears down the length of the roll of film - hopefully not a problem with the camera!

...and you are on a winner, as it seems very popular on forums showing how people live in different countries ....most people are naturally interested in people.

Velvia 400??????

Do you mean Provia 400 or Sensia 400? Not saturated enough for velvia anyway.

my first roll of pano.

Scanned from the hardcopy ( because the negative just wont scan) and then some hodge-podge. They look much worse than the original

Ujjwal - i'm never going to listen to you again when you say you don't have an eye for a shot - those pano's are absoloutely fantastic, and are not helping my xpan cravings one bit

Sorry, Provia 400. Note to self, read box before throwing away.

Brilliant - I love this one!

Have to agree Ujjwal, they are excellent. I have the same problem with scanning, they never look as good as the originals. Asda only scan a very low res disc as well so the next lot are going off to a lab.

Andy

Thanks guys. I think the pano format is grand on its own; and makes even ordinary photos look good.

Here are a few square formats - used it after a long time. Never really liked the format, so wanted to use it one last time before I sold the Mamiya 6, and never go back to it again. Funny thing is, I actually liked it this time around - and thinking whether to keep it.

Bigyin : thanks for the offer. You know you just have to ask for the X-Pan and I'll put it in the post.

Scanned from hard copy and resized.

Hey! I have taken a few B/W shots, but DIY could only get up to 16X20".

A digital pic of one of my DIY prints with my glasses to show size:-

Great to see this being updated so often, so here is one from new camera (4x5 crown graphic) I haven't stopped playing with it since it arrived. This was shot on ilford mulitgrade paper, with some shift.
