Jakska, that beach shot with the bottle is great - such natural tones :)

I'll be grabbing the next Yashica MAT 124G that comes my way...

Thank you for your comment Jakska, here are some more from the same reel.

Three shots from a roll of velvia that just seemed to be never-ending...

Velvia 50, Canoscan 8800F, Silverfast SE, Yada-Yada-Yada....

KevM - your film is finally ready for sending and assuming I get a lunch break tomorrow will be winging its way to you ASAP

Right then, had a bunch of films done the other day and am now working through what I got back:

First up Lubitel 2 and Lomapan 100 combo:

Then it's Nikon F65 and TMax 3200:

And finally, Color Plus 200 and Canonet QL19 - although one obviously converted to black n white:

All processed and scanned by the good folk at Bayeux.

After a bit of a scanning marathon I've finally got some slides scanned. I'm trying to find a nice film for macro work and bought some Provia and Sensia. The most noticeable thing is that my camera shake is absolutely awful, before I even think about making a choice I need to improve my technique. Excuse the hasty liberal use of smart sharpen (it didn't seem so obvious in PhotoShop, neither did the poor sRGB conversion :()

1. Sensia - oh look, some daffodils.

2. Sensia - free horrific oversharpening.

3. Provia - I got the exposure right on this one, go me!

4. Sensia - Another sharpening disaster I'm afraid.

5. Sensia - I quite like this, shame about the background.

6. Sensia - this one is actually sharp. honest!

***Excuse the hasty liberal use of smart sharpen***

If you can't afford drum scanning, then everybody should use sharpening by any means...it's not cheating but just putting back what you have lost using flat bed scanners, and I've noticed my supermarket sharpens scanned negs (probably pre-set by the engineer).

BTW nice shots.

Another one from the archives: Nikon F5 and Ilford HP5 dev'd in ID-11 as per usual...

The 'then' UK National BMX Champion rider Clive Gosling...(I think)...

Thanks, the problem with these particular shots is that I don't believe they're soft because of the scan, the frames themselves are "off". The sharpening has masked the problem to some degree I just think that's it's more of a wake up call after using digital for so long. I despise tripod mounting for macro work so I will work on my technique to keep everything steady under such conditions.

A few more shot on Provia:

These shots, along with the ones in my previous post are the result of two rolls of both Provia 100F and Sensia. I shot them on several different days and in different light to see which one I preferred. Out of these I believe that I much prefer the colour rendition of Provia and also managed to get better exposure on the Provia rolls than the Sensia. By far the biggest problem I had was with camera shake so I think I'm going to give Provia 400X a try (once 7dayshop actually gets some stock...)

Hey Statler and welcome to TP! :)

I really like the feel of the 2 shots posted especially number 2!

Some really great shots on here. I have been 'away' for a while, so I thought I'd share some of my recent stuff with you. Now, these shots might look quite similar to some of Woodsy's he posted. That's only cos we were at the sme places at the same times!

anyway, on with the show :)

1) Worms head Rhosili. Not the cleanest neg i have ever produced. Riddled with dust in fact. I need a drying cabinet. Looked like sunset was going to be trash until some kind soul set fire to some heathland on the gower. That's not cloud. Its smoke!

2) Yawn, Elgol.

4558412977_155817c954_o.jpg

3) Buchaille etive beag. We spent a joyous 2 hours dashing around the stretch from loch rannoch to ballacullish. One minute we were in a snow storm, next the sun was streaming through the clouds. I can understand where storm chasers get their buzz from now!
4559042586_d3fc3dd671_o.jpg

4) Loch Leven. Panorama stitch of 2 5x4 frames. Printed at 300 dpi, this is a 60 inch by 28 inch print. About a 850Mb tiff when open.

5) Loch Na-Achlaise. Brrrrrr. Cold.

think thats enough to be going on with for now.

As I said to Woodsy, these are stunning and #1 is out of the normal realms of stunning, great work. Congrats.

I really like that style of photography and I think the underexposure actually adds to it here.

It'd be absolutely perfect if the headline of the paper had something relevant to the rest of the image. Next time, eh?

Thanks! I think I would have to take my own newspaper along and someone to hold it! ;)

Great shots Spencer, I'm loving number three. I never seems to capture that sort of lighting caused by gaps in the clouds.

You're getting some great shots out of the Lubitel Jon, you've got the hang of it very quickly.

Tried my hand at a model shoot recently. A mixture of Portra 160NC and Ektar, I am liking the results of the latter more.

3 and 4 are epic Wilson. Excellent tones, did they take much processing after scanning or is this how they came out?

Cheers Kev.

  1. Scan to negative as raw
  2. Open in Photoshop
  3. Invert image
  4. Add curve layer, then select black level using the film base colour
  5. Add another curve layer on top to set grey balance, use the eye drop selector on a grey part of the image
  6. Then adjust the curve for contrast as necessary

So not too much processing. The part where you can get most inconsistency is the grey balance because you may not always have a suitable grey in the scene, in which case just keep selecting parts of the image until you get something close. You can see a green cast on the third based on the selected grey balance.

Cheers Wilson. Can you not save those curves for a particular film and re-use them or is it not that accurate?
