On a 50D at 1/125, f/2.0, 400 ISO, small crop, no other edits.

On a 50D at 1/800, f/2.0, 200 ISO, medium crop, no other edits.

I have been questioning it for a little while actually, don't worry about it!

For my purposes I am beginning to think that just one lens isn't quite going to cut it, I really need something wider and a bit longer. the 85 seems perfect to cover my 'longer' side.

Just got this lens last week. I find it so much more useful than 50mm on a crop body.

I like this. I am guessing you were near the minimum focussing distance? I would love to be able to take photos of cats close up and just have the face in focus with the rest disappearing into blurriness. There's a photo on the Internet somewhere with a cat taken against a similar background, but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Found the pic I was talking about on Wikipedia, turns out it's actually taken with a 50mm f/1.2 @ 1.2.

If you like that effect you should try the 85mm f/1.2 II.

Nope minimum focus difference would only get part of one eye in focus
