Should I work for free?????

:)

Again.... something with no real product at the end... just data. I think that's part of the problem. Photography has become something where the final product is a file you download for most people. The irony is, as more and more of us are taking images than every before, more and more of us understand photography less.

I think this is the crux of it; data, intellectual property etc has no physical substance, hence no 'value', and that influences people's perspective on the same.

Of course there is value, but how to wrap and present the product in such a way that people perceive inherent value and are prepared to pay a price.
I recently made my will. There are plenty of free templates you can download and use, yet I opted to pay a solicitor £300 for the privilege. Why? The value I drew from the transaction was piece of mind that it was all witnessed correctly and stored somewhere people might actually find it.

There is value to be created, and people will pay for it.

Only seems to be the creative industries though. Don't get it in bakery, or gardening, or transport... or building. Imagine that? "I see you've just set yourself up.. I'd love you to build me an extension... I have no budget, but it would be GREAT exposure for you."

You do get it in at least 2 of those industries. A small delivery company will offer to do a few free drops for potential big clients to show what they can do and a gardener will do a few small jobs to show what he can do. Not worked in bakery but I would be surprised if there wasn't something similar in that area.

There is probably an element of this, when all you get is a pdf or a file of a photograph there is no indication of the potentially hundreds of man hours that went into the creation of that few mb of data.

So personal experience doesn't count? 5 Years ago is ancient history? I don't see what you are getting at? If you have a point to make please do so in more than 5 words.
Lol you never said 5 years ago. You said something like before our time.. Your not younger then 5 years right?

And I can imagine most here are over 20 so before our time means 20+ years ago..

What he actually said was "in a previous life", which is different to "before our time". Lives can change very rapidly.

Previous life means before our time ie another life.

A typical humans life spams over 60 years..

Jeeze, now I feel old...

Previous life is a figure of speech, usually meaning a previous employment or career.

Well if you want to get pedantic your example of free music is false. There is a difference how you pay for something like Spotify. You can either pay money to listen as you want or you pay time to listen to the ads that make it possible. Either way you have to give something for it.

I must say working for free is not very sustainable.

I enjoy taking photos at events that my wife is taking part in, the latest ones being the Reading Half-Marathon and the Tough Mudder in West London.

I'm not going to twiddle my thumbs whilst waiting for my wife - so I took thousands of photos of people, if anything I revel in sharpening my skills.

So I have thousands of photos of people in the reading half-marathon and I think it's a shame that they never get to see them; I felt charitable and wanted to unite the photos with those people - as you can imagine I got flak for that, from here on TP - I took them offline.

At Tough Mudder, I took thousands of photos - people assumed I was an official photographer and really played up to the camera - which was great for me. However my experience with the Reading Half-Marathon is that it is a complete waste of time to process anything but a handful of photos. One couple did ask where they could find their image, and they did remember my web address which was nice, and I emailed them a copy of their photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/62198876@N02/17177561018/

Now I feel bad, next time I go photograph my wife and event maybe I need a hi-ves vest which says " I AM NOT AN OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER I'M JUST DOING THIS FOR FUN "

You know how I feel about Free! It's a great starting point into any field. And there is nothing wrong with you doing any thing for free that's your choice. Are you good enough to get paid then yes. But I know you feel that if you get paid it does become a job and jobs by nature aren't fun.

If we are comparing getting paid for a job or selling prints they are different. If all I did was landscapes I would want people to visit my shop *hint hint* and actually purchase some of my stuff. Please note I don't just do landscapes.
But I have charged for a party in the past yo cover my time for he occasion which I didn't feel bad about.
Although my dream is to become a portrait and street artist yes an artist I am probably some way off from being where I want to be but alas I have where i want to go. And hell I have a stalker sorry follower on flickr face book as well so fame does come at a price.

My only issue is why did you let a bunch of randoms bully you into taking them down? Its there issue to deal with not yours! Put em back up along with two fingers ;)

How can one compete with someone offering to do it for free

Having said that I'm doing a free shoot in a few weeks! For practice but I told them they want prints they buy them through my shop ;) they were going to use groupon and asked me instead. Bloody work colleagues.

Equally how can the person doing it for free compete..

and the one burning question I will be pushed to get an answer to and never know.. did they know I was booked when they offered to do it for free... thats the killer question in me eyes..

surely thats "on spec" .. I do sports jobs where nobody pays me but I sell prints...

Well I'm hoping to get paid for it. I usually charge on commission but I'm a sucker for portraits and thought I need to expand my portfolio of more than just me.

Exactly... he wasn't working for anyone... he was a spectator. Thousands of people from the event would have been blasting images out over social media any way.

I'm fairly certain some people in here are still not getting what we mean by "working" for free.

Giving away images without payment.

There's no expectation for you to charge for them though... you were just a spectator at a public event.
