Yes
Slightly gutted that my new Tamron 17-50 hasn't turned up yet, but I was content in the knowledge that my new Sigma 50-150 2.8 was waiting for me at home after being delivered.

Just unpacked it and they've sent me a 150-500mm 5-6.3 instead! The packing slip says 50-150 as it should be. Now this isn't from a massive company like Warehousexpress, it's more of a 2-3 branch/online jobbie.

Two questions:

1) Given I already own this lens and don't need it, should I let them know of their mistake? This lens is about a £200 premium over the one I ordered!

2) If I am going to send it back, should I be super sneaky and compare this copy to the one that I got in Hong Kong earlier this year, and keep the sharper one?

I'm sure I'm going to hell for thinking either of the above, but I'd be intrigued to see what you other deviants / good folk think.

Cheers.

Call me boring, but I'd let them know straight away what they had done and send it back to them (at their expense of course).

Honesty does pay IMHO, even if it's only reward is a good night's sleep.

i wouldn't do it now youve posted it across the interenet oh and the serial numbers wouldn't match for 2)

The guilts already kicked in even thinking about it, so send it back as is. If you are happy with your copy of this lens, then why compare:shrug:

send it back, especially as you've advertised the fact you're considering committing fraud on the internet

Tell them you received the box with a brick in it, and you are not happy. Demand they send you your lens immediately.

Well, I thought I'd balance out all the advice above.

I'm sure someone else posted a similar thread... getting the 150-500 instead of the 50-150 just a day or two back!

You need to contact them and offer them the chance to rectify their mistake.

Do not contemplate doing a swap - this is fraudulent.

Dear Internet,

I'm considering committing postal fraud, just thought you'd all like to know,

Signed,

Kalibre

I wouldn't consider a becoming a career criminal if I were you :naughty:

Send the box back, with your cheapest kit lens in it, demand it be rectified.

Flog the new (mistaken) one on the web.

Job done, foolproof.

I wouldn't have even considered keeping it.

As they are only a small company and need the revenue for wages I would be tempted to SELL IT TO ME sod the guilt trip ... send it back honesty is the best way mate

I'd send it back, It's no use to you as you've already said.

You'll feel better doing the right thing:)

Absolutely no question ... Honesty is always the best policy my friend... ;)

Come clean, call them and let them tell you how they are going to rectify the situation... :D

:p

sending it back and saving them some money could end up with you gaining a reward off them like free postage or a lenspen or summat

lol, I pretty much came to that conclusion as I was typing it, but I thought I'd give you lot a chance to prove what outstanding and honest citizens you are.

What I will be doing (which someone eluded to in a post) is check out the new copy as it's not strink wrapped or anything, as I've pondered sending mine to Sigma for calibration as it 'might' be a bit soft at the longer lengths. This will help me make up my mind.

I've used this company a lot so wouldn't want to damage relations anyway.

(No doubt I'm still going to hell for even posting it though )

Send it back. Especially as you don't even have a use for it

Use it to commit a crime that brings you millions, then send it back. Your copy of the lens will be clean giving you a perfect alibi. And I think you'll find that it really is that simple...

I would be honest and send it back and I would also hint for a reward for my honesty

If it's a company you use a lot anyway, be honest and you may well find they do something nice for you in return - especially if you're a good customer. Chances are they may well work out what's happened anyway......you know it makes sense.

And being honest here, although I wouldn't keep it, I'll admit I would have thought about it!

Firstly I'll say that I'd ring them and ask if they'd like it back - then let them collect it. The trouble is once I ordered a Creative Zen Micro MP3 player. They sent me a box of 24 of them. I rang them, they offered me a reward, they collected them then refused the reward as 'the boss said no, sorry'.

I understand the dilemma - I imagine that you'd rather just had what you paid for (and then could play with).

Thanks for the honesty

About 30 seconds passed between me opening it and creating the thread (that's sad isn't it), so it really was a snapshot evil temptation. (Insert muhahaha sound).

I was about to post saying I'd send it straight back - but being threatened with a lens pen has made me reconsider

What would be interesting is if they do reward you in some way to let us all know who the company is, good advertising for them and all that guff. If they tell you to send it back then tell you to sling your hook once they have received it then also let us know so we can slate them

Perhaps pointing them toward TP saying lots of potentially new and existing customersare awaiting the results...after all its Xmas.

So come on then, who are they??!!

Send it to me mate.
I absolutely PROMISE I'll send it back to them :p

:agree:

It's just the right thing to do.

LOL. You know the answer - if you keep it, it's Theft plain and simple. If you change the lenses over it's Criminal Deception. Hardly worth risking the loss of your good name for. ;)

Something that just occurred to me... You didn't buy it from A J Purdy, did you? If you sent something back to them now, it would very probably disappear into some sort of bureaucratic black hole.

i always thought that if you recieved something that you didn't order, technically, it's being sent as a 'gift' So i'd keep it.

Then again, just been on a legal website, and it says that you must notify the seller, and they should replace it at their own cost, and send the correct item to the purchaser.

So you should send it back, and request the correct one, but you should not, by law, pay anything to send it back, or recieve the replacement.

Would this item be regarded as unsolicited? By law you are free to keep any unsolicited items that are sent to you home ...however as this seems to be a mistake then I would suppose it may not be regarded as unsolicited!!!!
Get yourself a good lawyer (£300 per hour) and ask them.

what goes around comes around

An easily overused quote but soooooooooooooooo right:thumbs:

Be a good citizen and send it back or you will be straight on the naughty list- bet you hadn't thought of that:thinking:

As nearly everyone else said...call them up about the mistake and return the lens. It makes no difference if you already have a copy of this particular lens...and no, trying to substitute your "old" copy for the new one is absolutely not an option. The size of the store also has no bearing on the decision, or whether you plan to deal with them in the future. What's right is right; what's wrong is wrong. If you cheat the company, you'll think about it every single time you use that lens, and your thoughts will never be constructive. Guilt is a powerful emotion. You'll sleep better knowing you did the right thing.
