My friend is selling the following for £410

cannon eos 1000d
tamron 80-250 fd lens with carry case
fd to eos adaptor
lowepro camera bag
original cannon carry bag
uv, pollar, florescent lens filters and case
velbon cx440 tripod

Camera is in great condition it's got shoulder strap, charger, manual, 18-55 lens with uv filter and cables for tv. Two carry bags for it one lowpro bag and the original cannon bag whats a bit bigger with more pockets for bits and pieces. The tamron fd 80-250 (80-250adaptall) lens is in good as new condition there's not a single mark on it.

Would this be a good camera for a total beginner? Would it give clear crisp portrait images? My interest in photography mainly would be portraits especially of children, would this camera be suitable? Would I need a different lens to give sharp images or would that be adequate? If I get into photography and shoot portrait images for free as practice would this camera be suitable for that and if I got into it more on a professional level would I need to buy a new camera or could I stick with this even for professional paid shoots? Is it a good price or is it worth buying a different camera?

Sorry for all the questions! Please help as need to let him know my the end of the week before he lists it online!

I don't think so - I know you can't see the classifieds here but a 1000D was advertised recently for £250 with a better lens. bags can be bought cheap and the tripod is only a cheapo £25.

Steer clear - based on price.

Steer clear of any FD lens on an EOS body.

Just looking at Amazon, you can get the camera 2nd hand for £210 and the tripod for £22. I'm not sure about the lens but you could buy a 50mm 1.8 2nd hand for around £45.

I very much doubt that the rest of the kit will add up to his asking price so I would offer him no more than £350 max.

The camera and a 50mm 1.8 would be fine for what you want. The tripod won't be up to much but will be ok short term.

Hope this helps.

Sounds overpriced to me and not ideal for a starter with the FD lens.

Oh thanks for the speedy replies! Much appreciated as I am very much a duck out of water in regards to photography at the moment.

Hope you don't mind if I ask a further question

What would you recommend is good as a beginner camera that can achieve fairly high quality portrait photos and what lens would you recommend to go with that camera to get good results for portrait photos?

I don't have any idea about different types of lens's yet so if you could guide me as to what i'd need to begin with for good quality shots i'd be very grateful.

Your best bet is to go and handle some and get a feel. What suits one won't suit another.

Dependant on your budget I would get a cheap 50 mm lens, the camera and a flash gun. You will need extras but any decent shop assistant will sort you.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Personally I think the gear your friend is selling is very overpriced and under spec. I've just checked on ebay and found a listing on there from a seller called Digigood. I can highly recommend the seller as I have used him a number of times and have never had a problem.
The listing here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-CANON...Cameras_DigitalCameras_JN&hash=item45ff854741 would be a perfect starter kit and if you could afford to get the Canon 18-55 IS lens as well (normally around £50 to £70) you would have a great start to photography. It also does HD video as well if you should get into that.
Looking at that, I may just look into one for the kids next christmas to save me having to beat them off my gear for a change.

This may be slightly off-topic, but why do I get

The camera and lens alone don't take "high quality photos". The use of light and learning how to use the camera will allow you to make them.

Links work fine for me.

Sorry to ask what might be a silly question, but what is a FD lens?, is it an older style one without auto functions?

Yes

To expand on that a little - FD lenses did have auto functions apart from AF when used on FD cameras. Canon ditched the FD mount for the all electronic EOS in 1987. FD to EOS is one of the worst combinations for lens adapters because they both have quite large mount-to-sensor/film distances so you either lose inifinity focus or find an adapter with an optical element which increases the focal length and is usually of poor quality.

That's very helpful, cheers. I'm kinda half looking for some lenses for my DMC-L1, something with a long zoom as want to try and get the moon. Sorry to hijack the thread.

No need to apologise, glad people responded to you :)

Hi Chantelle & Welcome

As has been suggested, if you can have a play about with differrent makes etc to see which feels best in your hands...

Don't think there is anything wrong with the kit you listed in your initial post - it is an entry level body and if this is your budget and you are happy with it, then go for it, but I think the general feeling is the price is a little on the high side.

Personnaly -> If you know this guy well and he's a good friend, you know how well the Camera has been looked after, if this is something you wish to buy, then I'd be temped to make an offer to him for the Camera and kit lens (18-55), maybe one of the bags if you like them and let him list the other bits on e-bay.

I would then look at the Canon 50mm F1.8 and also the Canon 55-250IS lens down the line. Both of these are great lenses for the price...

Hope this is of some help..
