Shooting and Explosions in Paris

I feel desperately sorry for the events in Paris. And those directly and indirectly affected.

Little to no point either side of the argument using it as a point scoring exercise though

Just found out that my friend whose wedding I photographed a few years ago in South of France just lost two of his best friends. Getting worried about what we are leaving behind for the next generation .

It has been suggested that one of the suicide bombers was a Syrian who had passed through the Greek island of Leros as a refugee in October

hmm. where has that come from?

id suggest the ones that sneaked in under the radar are probably of more threat than those going through border control where their details could be recorded/checked.

Syrian passport holder passed through Greece - minister
Posted at16:38

A Greek government minister says the holder of a Syrian passport found at the scene crossed into the European Union through the Greek island of Leros in October.

Deputy public order minister Nikos Toskas, said in a statement:

On the case of the Syrian passport found at the scene of the terrorist attack, we announce that the passport holder passed from Leros on October 3 where he was identified based on EU rules ... We do not know if the passport was checked by other countries through which the holder likely passed.

so probably wasn't a "known risk" then. otherwise why risk being detained.

interesting that the link also says
  1. Bataclan attacker 'was Frenchman known to police'
  2. Stade de France attackers 'had Egyptian and Syrian passports'

(ive not heard any news since this morning so new to me)

We should also be erasing certain words and phrases from the bible as well.
There are already hundreds of millions of moderate Muslims.

There are, and I believe it will be them that are the major force In combatting IS. One thing I would like to see is a more public backlash by Muslim leaders, maybe it happens and not getting reported but my perception is that they could be doing more. When hebdo happened there was a bbc survey of uk Muslims and I think 1 in 10 supported the actions and 1 in 4 sympathised. That worries me.

Now they can't control the oddballs out there, and there will always be idiots but the Muslim community must be encouraged and supported to fight this from within.

Syrian passport found at the scene?? Why would anyone take passport to go and shoot people?? All this s*** is an inside job! They need an excuse like 09/11.
Maybe the plan was to get away afterwards ?

They need an excuse like 09/11.
I don't think they need another "excuse" to throw their hat into the ring, they had plenty, back in January.

In January three Islamist gunmen killed 17 people in coordinated terror strikes across Paris.
The victims, including journalists and police, were killed in three days of violence, including a mass shooting at the weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo,
known for its satirical attacks on Islam and other religions.

most likely a mistake or didnt care anyone finding their identity.
I suspect that if they didn't get out alive, the object of the "exercise" was for the world to know who had carried out this atrocity

About two months ago a reporter interviewed a refugee on the radio - I think he had just landed by boat in Italy. He said there were 130 people on the boat plus a group of four or five other guys huddled together at the back who were not part of the group. They had different accents and everyone on board knew what they were and to keep from interacting with them. It was obvious he thought they were fighters of some kind. I thought that sounded really worrying.

I'm not blaming the refugees, by the way. I have a great deal of sympathy for them. After all, a lot of them are fleeing from just the kind of thing that happened in Paris last night (and a lot worse).

The government needs public to back them up. It all went quiet after Charlie Hebdo. Now flood of refugees/immigrants. People say stop this madness, leave those countries, help them don't bomb them. Let's awake that anger in society. Hollande already said: This is war. Just like Bush back in the day.

Exactly this. From their point of view, the more that IS can divide Europe over the refugee situation, the better.

I'm already cringing at the thought of how our tabloid papers will run with this and I haven't even seen a headline yet. :(

it is a little convenient. but tin foil hats aside, excuse for what exactly? air strikes on syria?

Indeed, why take a passport along unless it was intended that it be found. Syrian passport from a bad guy ............ think again about taking refugees from Syria, perhaps. ISIS would want that since if refugees cannot escape it adds to the turmoil that finishes Syria and gives the terrorists some innocent people with which to mingle.

As an aside here is a little statistic to put things in perspective. In 2014 in Iraq only, the number of civilians killed in terror attacks = 9,929. That was about 3,000 more than the previous year.
That is a Mad Max world over there. Soon be using camels for transport.

Yup, unlikely to be thinking about getting away with suicide vests strapped to you for maximum carnage, which makes you think it was for identification.
Not like Isis to wait to declare it was them responsible, so, possibly about others in the area, enablers?

No, their motivating factor is to establish a global caliphate following their rules. Murder is just a way if archiving that.

But that won't happen. More proof that they are just head the balls.

If it's just like Bush, we're all doomed.

For me this sums it up:

"Thoughts go out to those in Beirut, Iraq and Paris that lost their lives yesterday. Do not let the atrocities in Paris increase your prejudice - I've seen that far too often already today. Remember, the refugees were fleeing to Europe because they came across deplorable acts like this everyday. Do not let this tragedy draw you to lose your tolerance or humanity. Only a global collective effort can root out evil. Do not Pray for Paris - that will achieve nothing. Instead show love, compassion, empathy, and an understanding of different cultures while embracing education. Only when we collectively as a species say enough is enough and address ALL social issues as a global community will we be ready to move forward."

The "officials" who made the statement regarding an alleged Syrian passport, spoke "on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named".
So a case of leaking inflammatory information in order to further stir the fear before those affected have even managed to get the ringing out of their ears?

For me this sums it up:...
That's all very noble but the people killing for current threat we all face will just laugh a little harder as they kill you if you spout this "I love and respect everyone equally" message.

Before we can live in peace and show love to everyone everwhere we're going to have to see a lot of people who see this thinking as weakness die.

but then its a catch 22..

dont act too soft because they could attack but bomb them and stir up a hornets nest and they could attack.

whats the solution..

whats the solution..
TBH personally, they ( the terrorists) must thing that we, the West / Europe must be an easy target,
they do as they please, and it appears all we do is talk about how / when / if we will retaliate.

and stir up a hornets nest and they could attack.
Very true, but then if we don't act, because of what they might do, I suspect that they will do it anyway, as above.
It'll get worse before it gets better, thats for sure!

I guess the other thing is, we don't know who they are
You would hope that all these "Agencies" have a damned good handle on that, otherwise what are we paying them for?
I suspect ( would hope at least) that they know far more than they are letting on.

or simply cannot remove all of them without someone or another group popping up.
Aint that the truth ? :(

We (the west...in fact anywhere) are incredibly easy targets.
How do you secure against people willing... Eager even,...to die for their cause?

They will officially join war against IS. Maybe even on Russian side? We'll see.

They already are.

PARIS — The French presidency on Thursday said it would deploy its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to boost its operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

The presence of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the flagship of the French navy, will add to the six Rafale jets stationed in the United Arab Emirates and the six Mirages flying out of Jordan.

The Charles de Gaulle did a two-month stint in the Gulf from February, from where strikes against IS in Iraq were carried out, before returning to its base in the French port of Toulon.

During this time about 20 aircraft carried out 10-15 combat sorties a day, according to the army.

France launched air strikes against the jihadists in Syria in October, after a year of bombing IS in Iraq, saying it was acting in self defense.

France was hit by a jihadist attack in January that left 17 dead and has foiled several other attempted attacks.

3 people arrested on the Belgium border trying to cross. They were in a rental car seen at 3 locations of attacks. French nationals not previously known to the authorities.

This is the bit that gets me every time, never mind Arthur Scargill and the miners, this is truly the enemy within!

Everybody in France has to carry some form of official photo id when they're out and about......I carry my passport and/or residents card. I'm guessing that the perp' didn't have a residents card so a passport is the next most likely item if he didn't want to chance being arrested if stopped prior to his "mission".
