So my son has sold his trainers on eBay for a buy it now price - the guy that's bought them says he,s in New Zealand at the moment but wants them shipped to the USA! If he pays by PayPal and we send them tracked and signed for delivery can we be conned here??

Steve

If he pays by PayPal and you ship to a different address other than the PayPal registered one, then as far as I know, you will NOT be covered if anything goes wrong.
This happened to me in the past, and I don't think anything has changed.
I am happy to be proved wrong though! Check on the PayPal site to make sure.

I would only ship to the registered Paypal address :)

Copied from the PayPal site-

You may be able to add a gift address to your PayPal account during the payment process, on the 'Review Your Payment' page.

Otherwise, you may be able to add a gift address to your account by following the below steps:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click Profile near the top of the page.
  3. Beside 'Address', click Update.
  4. Click Add Address.
  5. Select Add a gift address, enter the address, and then click Save.
So just to be safe, ask the buyer to add the new address to their account profile and you will be covered.

I suspect you are being conned already...

Someone "in" New Zealand wants the item posted to the US? Sorry, it screams scam from the rooftops.

Have you even researched the cost of a Paypal approved postage method to be sending them abroad?

Well no because I didn't like any of it from the start! I smelt a fish and told my son but he didn't want to listen! Now you guys have pretty much confirmed my fears and I showed my son this thread he's now resisted them! So thanks all!

Can you block international buyers if you list an item as buy-it-now?

Yes you can. Theres a place you can block any country you don't want to send to, or you can state UK only.

Thanks ! We blocked all countries to send to so that will stop people buying it too?

It actually doesn't always block people buying from a country you've blocked for some reason, kept happening to me. Might have been a bug at the time, but it was pretty annoying. People in Kazakhstan wanting me to post a 99p pair of earplugs.. Yeah right.

err have you cancelled the deal through ebay for the new zealand guy?

he could in all honesty start an "item not received" dispute now and you'll get a black mark.

Can't find where to do this ??
You have to choose the 'report a problem' optrion, where you will be given a choice of solving a problem or cancelling a transaction. Stupid place to put it IMO but there you go, ebay is on it's way downhill faster than ever before at the moment!

Help! Now the bloke has paid my son £500 and wants them shipped to Nigeria! What do we do???

What about the money he sent?

Refund it via Paypal (if that's how it was paid). Check by going to Paypal by typing www.paypal.com into your browser, do NOT click through any links on the payment "confirmation" you have received.

Any other payment method (most likely the Paypal one as well if it's £500) is probably going to be fake with some sort of counterfeit payment confirmation.

Yea it was PayPal-is there a way of scamming us if we just send the money straight back?

Has £500 actually arrived in your PayPal account - or have you just received an email saying it has?

Also send the email to PayPal to check on authenticity. They will then cover you and end transaction.

Will check all this our when I get home and report back-thanks everyone-great advice as usual!

PS. I wouldn't wait 'til you get home - I'd contact eBay & PayPal immediately. My rat-smelling meter just went off the scale.

£500 for a pair of trainers!? Holy f***. Id definitely do a runner from this deal though. Well dodgy.

As Ozei says, it's a good bet no money has actually gone through Paypal, and if you click on any links in their email it won't actually be Paypal you are redirected to.

I would log into Paypal and check what is showing in your account, I would also give Paypal a call and tell them the full story and ask their advice as well.

PayPal Customer Service:

08707 307 191

00 353 1 436 9004 (call to ROI/Eire) All international and mobile rates do apply

Remember, just getting an email purportedly from Paypal doesn't equate to actually receiving a payment.

tell him to p*** off (and cancel the transaction)

I'd be willing to bet that theres not 500 quid really in your paypal account. (this smells like ta variation of the "you refund then, the original payment bounces and you are left 500 quid out of pocket scam")

Dont send it back whatever you do! You probably haven't received it in the first place. Do not click anywhere on the email but save it for future proof. Contact PayPal/Ebay immediately.

This is a common eBay scam! Used to happen to me all the time - it's why I don't sell on evilBay anymore! :(

just need to adjust your settings to say what countries can bid on your items.

ive sold many a high value item with no scammers :D

Yeah, I never quite worked that out :p
