This is a relatively new phenomenon and it's one that swings the outrage meter to 11.

Why do people feel the need to take so many selfies or even "groupies" all making silly faces with their heads rammed together.

I was at the Kelpies last night and there was a group of girls who went there it seems purely to take selfies on their iPhone.

If they're that keen on portraits why not either

A) take up photography seriously and take decent photographs
B) pay a professional to take their photos for them.

I overheard them saying "we have to go back there we are missing selfies from there"

I noticed this in Monserrat in Spain and in Mont St Michel. People were more interested in bagging the selfie or group shot than they were with connecting with the place and understating it's place in history.

As it were, these selfies I do like. They have a sense of adventure and risk that a couple of 18-30something hipsters/fools from Falkirk will never achieve .

Sod that! That's down right mad! I never understood the selfie culture either TBH, especially the ones that make them look like a goldfish, looking out of the bowl. As an aside, If the queen takes a selfie, is it in fact a onesie ?

I'm going to The Kelpies tomorrow. No plans to take any selfies though.
 
Surely its people just having a bit of fun. Im not sure why it bothers other people so much...apart from the ones that are swinging the selfie sticks around...they are quite annoying.

What annoys me more, is things like this... :whistle:

We were at Helix Park yesterday and tried to get to the Kelpies but it was so busy. Loads of kids flying around on scooters and 2 moaning kids that had knackered themselves at the park.

Just hoping to get an idea of where to go so that I can nip back and do a night shot. Hopefully no selfie brigade in the evening.
 
I really couldn't give a monkey's about folks taking selfies.

What annoys me more is some plank with lots of equipment and an ENORMOUS sense of entitlement, miserably grumbling because he/she believes their photograph is more important than everyone else's, and that everyone should clear the decks to let him "perform".
 
I really don't see the issue with selfies. I think they are brilliant, provides me with lots of on street humour. Especially when I see old people walk about with their tablets as a camera, try and do a selfie with it in the sunshine and apply a pout. Brilliantly funny, but nothing to do with portrait photography.

Live and let live. On that note, here is me, myself and I getting ready to make some pizza.

I've taken selfies with the missus. It's a reminder of our visit to a particular place. In the past, I'd have taken a camera and tried to do a "selfie" using the self-timer. It's a lot easier with mobile phones.

What I don't do is take selfies for the sake of it. And none of them get posted onto the likes of facebook.

It was a holiday weekend but full of scenarios like this and barely coherent 18-30 sorts just taking mindless selfies.

You may find tonight will be better as it's a school night but honestly, if you want to enjoy their magnificence and splendour, go first thing.

I took a series of blue hour shots. Still to process but due the long exposure all the selfie/incoherents/unruly children on bikes and scooters ghosted out.

Mainly because:

a) they are more interested in the capture of the moment than the technical quality of the image and
b) that would be pricey but feel free to offer your services - I doubt they will be taking much direction though. I'm sure if you offered they would have been happy for you to take the pictures for them :)

^^^^^ What he said...... there are lots of things that people do/say that annoy me but as long as it doesn't directly impact or affect me then they can crack on..... if they want to look a bit silly then it's up to them.
 
We took a few selfies in Norway (GoPro on a stick).

Made for a few nice photos of me and her with a great backdrop.

As someone else said, if it's not hurting anyone then who cares.

This - unless the other person/people actually want to be hurt!!!

Hundreds of iPhones on selfish sticks in Iceland back in March but they soon biggered off when their coach went, leaving the scenery all but deserted. Most of them seemed to be taking shots of themselves looking at the scenery rather than themselves and the scenery - maybe they were videoing themselves saying "Wow!" a lot?
 
I made the mistake of getting my other half a GoPro with a selfie stick... I am not against the occsional 1-2 a day only because when I go somewhere I have trust isssues giving my camera to a stranger to take a photo of me and my swmbo, anything more than that is awful, I like to take my time and enjoy the place, sometimes I feel better not carrying my camera at all and just sink into the atmosphere.

Also...not remotely a new phenomenon, just made easier.
I remember decades ago folks would hand you their camera and ask you if you'd take their pictures.

Imagine actually having to interact with the great unwashed. Oh the horror! ! ;)

People with small cameras must give way to people with big cameras. Same with cars. :)

I think it's about courtesy. If I see someone with a large camera and tripod I can tell they are taking the photograph seriously so I will avoid walking in front of them or getting in their way. I would like the same done for me. Or if someone has a big dog is it really too much to ask they place it on a lead so it doesn't come bounding over and knocking over several £1000's worth of gear, or if someone has a child is it too much to ask they ask the child to keep still to refrain walking in the frame for 5 secs whilst someone takes an exposure of something at night. I do not think it is. In the same way, can a selfie stick yielder not just walk in front of someone with a tripod and camera for a few secs whilst they take their photograph. It's not about importance, its about respect, respect for other people and an awareness of whats going on around you. Some people simply have none.

In the same way if someone in a fast car is trying to get past me on a rural road. or someone simply wanting to drive faster than me, I won't block their progress but slow a little on a straight stretch to facilitate them passing. TBH this isn't something that happens to me often. Better still, if I am in the left hand lane in a queue of traffic and someone overtakes in the rh lane to cut in front, I will allow them in rather than close the gap. It is about courtesy, respect and doing as you would be done by.

The only holiday pictures we had that were in focus / framed properly were the ones that my Mam and Dad did that with the camera... Neither of them were capable of taking a decent shot to save their skins - and they never trusted me not to drop the camera :lol:

It is, and how many of the tripod brigade get in the way of those with selfie sticks due to a complete lack of awareness of whats going on. Even if i see someone with a small camera or phone trying to take a photo and I am getting in the way, I will try get out of that way. No-one wants a photo of me bar @Nikon_Nick who I will offer a series of personalised selfies of myself in and around Scottish scenery. For a price....

I see the "live and let live" brigade are out in force again. Don't they realise that selfies are the latest thing we can get angry about?

A lot of people don't give two s***s about whether their shots are regarded as good photos or framed correctly. They just want a picture of them and their mates with something pretty in the background.
I used to find it weird. Then I remembered that there was another episode of CSI still to watch, so thought about that instead.
 
I was at the Dachau concentration camp recently with other photographers, one of whom saw a couple taking a selfie in the gas chamber. And thought it crazy. But I think it's no different from other places where they want to show the folks back home that they were actually there, in the actual gas chamber.
