Can anyone please help with the correct method of selecting paper type in the printer settings:

I set the correct icm profile (downloaded from the paper manufacturer's website) in LR's soft proofing and the print module, so LR should control the output.

When checking the print settings in the printer properties settings dialogue that appears after pressing "Print" in LR, the only paper options are the standard photo paper, matt, glossy, premium, fine art etc. There is no option to select the actual paper in use.

Does LR overwrite the basic printer settings and "tell" the printer which paper has been selected?

The system is:
Windows 10
LR CC
Canon Pixma Pro 100S

I'm new to printing and keen to get the best from what should be a good printer.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

  • When you have selected LR to manage colour you then have to disable colour management in the printer. I use Epsom so I am only guessing at canon procedure. Actually I've just found this online.

  • When the printer choice is displayed select ‘Properties’ to make changes to the print settings;
  • Choose the ‘Main’ tab to select paper type and print quality;
  • Halfway down the window is ‘Colour / Intensity’. Select ‘Manual’ then ‘Set’;
  • In the manual colour adjustment window, select ‘Colour Correction’ to ‘None’. This disables printer colour management.
It is very important to carry out this step to prevent 'double profiling' which causes all sorts of colour problems. I'm sure a canon printer will be along soon to advise further. Good luck and never be afraid to ask.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply Gerry. I have disabled the printer colour management, it was buried deep in the printer settings. I think I have everything correctly configured - my only doubt is about the paper type selection when about to print. My prints are sharp and there is no colour cast on B&W prints, but I want to be sure that I'm getting the best out of the printer and the very expensive inks!

Also an Epson user here, and in addition to the info given by @Foxbat Flyer

In terms of paper type, your paper manufacturer should also give a paper type instruction for the printer you're using.

Here is an example from the Canson site which says that for my Epson printer, I need to set the paper type (in the printer settings) to "Premium Semi Gloss Photo Paper" and use Photo Black rather than Matt Black for my Baryta paper. Getting this wrong can also result in bad prints, but as Chris has stated, double profiling is a common error. As to setting the paper type in LR - as you say there are only a couple of options, but I tend to choose what I think is best and it's worked fine so far.
