I am thinking I should have a spare body in my bag (it would be a shame to trek down to somewhere like Le Mans or Rally GB and have a failure mean I didn't get any shots) but am stumped which way to go.

I already have a 1D Mk2 and thought a 1DS might make a good backup body plus give me full frame for landscapes and portraits.

Then I thought I might be better off with another 1D Mk2, or a 1D Mk2N as a direct replacement if required.

With the 1Ds or 1D Mk2 I like the idea of having shared spare batteries and chargers.

Finally as it is (hopefully) a spare body should I save a few quid and buy a 40D or something?

If motorsport or other action is your thing, then I would have thought that another MkII (or the 'N') would be your best bet.

If you're used to 1-series AF, speed, and handling then another 1D MKII or (MKIIN) ideally, the original 1Ds is very long in the tooth now and ISO performance and general responsiveness is nothing to write home about, it's also very heavy to use as a back-up and although it is full frame the supporting technology is very old now.

The 40D wouldn't be a bad option as it's newer technology, fast, lighter, and ISO performance is pretty decent I've seen lots of people use it for action and get very decent results and you have a 1.6x crop as a back-up if you need extra reach.

Right now I'm using a 1Ds mkII and am very pleased with it as a landscape/portrait camera, I had the option of getting an original 5D but went for the AF and handling of the one series. The 5D would perform slightly better in terms of ISO performance as it came out after the 1Ds MKII but there's not a lot in it.

If you want a back up body with the advanage of better IQ for landscapes and portraits then you should really be looking at the 1DsMk2, this will use the same batteries/charger, give you a wider option for your landscapes and better IQ for your portraiture.

It also has a similar AF and handling as the 1DMk2 which you already own.

Hi Mark
If you decide to go for a 1D Mk2, I have a Mk 2 N available.

Interesting thread this....I'm in a similar position...more through the fact I want to try a FF camera for portraits and landscapes.

What did the OP do in the end?

Thanks

Rob

Not pulled the trigger on anything yet although seeing another 1D Mk2 not reach its reserve on ebay tonight at £350 did tempt me.

Blimey....cheap enough!

Still not tempted enough by a MK1 1Ds? Or even a 5D?

Cheers

What's your main subject Mark?
What sort of prices have you seen the 1ds up for?

Rob

1DIIN (has less aggressive AA filter than the original mk2), mkIII or 1DsII in my opinion. You may still consider 5D for less hazardous environments. Don't worry about the batteries on the other cameras - 1D mk1/2 has probably the weakest ones by a long margin. I am seriously impressed how good the mkIII is.

Well I managed to get a ridiculous deal on a 1Ds this afternoon, even taking into account it needing a new shutter it is cheap enough that I can have a play and see if FF is my thing.

Now can anyone recommend a good chiropractor? This is going to be one heavy bag full!

Nice one! How to replace shutter do you think?

Funnily enough I have just bought one today too! Just got to await delivery.

Cheers

Rob

Check www.mpbphotography.co.uk, they have a scruffy 1DsII for £999 and two x scruffy 5D for £499, I was incredibly temped to pull the trigger on the first one but since I don't "need it" at the moment I decided not to ;) ...
