Hi guys...

Just looking for some inspiration and ideas of locations of where to shoot in Scotland... So post anywhere but please be quite specific... I know the West Coast etc is Beautiful... I'm more after exact locations... why you liked it... maybe even a photo!

I'm trying to just build up a wee ideas book for when i'm planning trips... marking locations up on a touring map so I can plan future trips away. My fiancee and I often just go a weekend long drive so tiing this in with good photo locations rather than guessing would be good!

Also My fiancee is off on her Hen weekend this weekend so im free to have a weekend to myself and going off taking some photos is my plan...

All location suggestions welcome... not looking for any particular genre!

Mark

I've only been to Skye and surrounds for one photography holiday but would recommend:
Niest Point, great sun on the cliffs and over to the islands.
Waterfalls at Glen Shiel
Tarskavaig Bay overlooking the Cullin
Old Man of Storr... big climb but worth it
Torridon, Loch Maree for a really prehistoric landscape
Duirinish: interesting village used a lot for tv/film location

Check here for some shots I've taken:

Get yourself a DEPSSI sunrise / sunset card and a good ordanance survey map if you're intending doing early morning or evening shots. Nothing worse that getting up at 4am and on arrival realising the sun is in completely the wrong direction. :bonk:

This may be of use ->
Sun/moon times . I know its for Aberdeen, but you can change the locations to lots of major towns.

Theres some good locations mentioned on the scotland tour thread currently running in the meeting place section. The Queirang on Skye

I know that even starting from Edinburgh this is a long way but the A836 from Lairg upto the north coast has some fantastic scenery. Its a bit dreary for the first 15 miles or so but when you get into the hills its fantastic and the whole north coast is wonderful as well.
I know I put this up every time anyone mentions Scotland but I don't care its my favourite shot as it was the first image I took that made me think I might not be completely useless as a photographer. Its Loch Loyal on the above road.

Chirnside In Scotland

Hi Mark, Just got back from The Ardnamurchan peninsular, (just west of Fort William). Some stunning scenery around there, Loch Sunart, Tioram Castle, Loch Knoidart, Sanna Sands etc. Also has the benefit of very few people, we stayed in Strontian. There are a few images in Travel portfolio on my site. http://www.briantarrimages.co.uk Hope this helps.

* Some stunning scenery * ? :D

You have just described probably the most photogenic part of the UK. West Scotland, and in particular, the Highlands, are probably without a doubt, the best Landscapes the UK has to offer.

I love it, to the point, where I WILL move there one day.

Gary.

Hi
Just back from Skye magical place wrong time of year though.
If anybody is interested a 105 mm circ Polariser is lying somewhere about
NG 584196. Ah well .

If it's specific you're after - why not try the village of Plockton, a few miles from Kyle of Lochalsh - it's absurdly pretty...

Drive for 1/2 hour further north to Torridon, and you get this...

Garry... I would add to this... depending on the weather... I went up to Ardnamurchan last Easter... and all it did was Rain Cat's and Dogs all week... but then that's my weather curse... I wander what old woman I upset that put a bit of a curse on me!!!

I think with all these places the main tip will be to stop... get out the car and walk a bit also! That's something I def need to do more off!

Is that not where those strange people live what wear bells round there wrists and ankles... bang sticks together... and drink cider live???

I guess its no stranger than us scots who wear a skirt and eat the scrapings of the butchers floor in a sheeps stomach!

Lets not have any racism here chaps... England has some amazing toging locations too....

Yes SKye... I need to go there... not been for years... Infact all of the islands are good. I think I'll do the top of Scotland and Orkney and Shetland next summer... will just have to see how things pan out...

Any good locations for day trips out of Edinburgh... I'm thinking the Borders etc...

I know the highlands well and have spent many a holiday in that area, my three probably favourites would have to be:

Loch Morlich near Aviemore,
Loch Garten near Boat of Garten
Loch Laggan On way to Spean Bridge from the A9 @ dalwhinnie (SPELLING?)

If you're up in that area a nice drive is to Rannoch Station along Rannoch Mor. stunning scenery and about fair old drive with a hotel and a station at the end, then its turn around and take the same (only) road back. Thats one I intend to spend a little time visiting when I'm up there in october :)

Ranoch Station is Def worth a visit... In fact that whole road... Def cross the line and walk onto Ranoch Moor as well for some shots... I've only ever been in ****ing weather... Are you getting the idea i've not had much luck with the sun... but it was amazing! I recomend the Loch Rannoch hotel!

What i'm finding funny is allot of you are posting places i've already been... So maybe i'm doing better than I thought with my list... hopefully will get some ideas as more posts come though!!!

The Trossachs - the gateway to the highlands...

1. Inversnaid Hotel Waterfall
2. Lock Arket!!!!

OMG I cant believe I knew these two pics too!!!!

Any day trip ideas for me from Edinburgh...

I've just had a thought that on Sat i'll go off and maybe shoot Castles of the Lothians... will see! Depends on the Weather....

I've been lucky enough to be driven along the ranoch road a few times in good weather, and every time a deer has appeared from NOWHERE! you cannot believe just how well they blend into the surroundings, especially considering the size of the red stag!

Cant wait to get there and drive it myself, fiancee never been along the road but loves the highlands. Roll on october!

Just get up at 2am and do the whole Edinburgh to Fort William run including Glencoe, Loch Tulla etc.
You wont go far wrong on that route m8.
Take the Back road from Kinlochleven to Ballachulish though either on the way there or back.

I didnt notice you were off m8, are you going for the day or overnight?
Im not 100% but depending on what day you are going i might be up for tagging along.
We could split the fuel etc.

Theres loads of good locations. The trossachs make a good day out. Start out at Aberfoyle and follow the road to Inversnaid hotel. In the right conditions, the views can be superb.

After hopefully getting some good shots in the right light, your next port of call is up the hill at the David Marshall Lodge. There is a walk there to the Little Fawn falls, which if the rain has been heavy for the previous days is very nice.

Then the next stop is Queen Elizabeth forest Drive, where in the middle of the Forest, Loch Drunkie awaits...:)

As you leave the forest drive, Blackwater Marsh is on the right hand side.

original.jpg

Then once you rejoin the main road it's down the hill towards Loch Achray.

If you are feeling energetic, you can climb Ben A'an from here. About 90mins to get to the top but the views are very good.

original.jpg

If thats not enough to cover a full days shooting you can head down towards Loch Lomond and wait for a sunset along from Balmaha

Hopefully that will be some good info to start you off.

Strax, they're stunning mate. Loch Arklet is a mighty fine photo indeed.

Great tour strax!!

Skye is for me one of the best photographic locations in the UK and like others here, I will live there one day.
It is worth a visit to the less well known view of the Cuillin, from the Sleat penisula instead of the more traditional Elgol.

Skye is a great location (as I sit here typing this in the middle of a weeks phototaking in Skye;))

I can agree with the view from Sleat towards the cuillin, I spent a good couple of hours at Dunsgaith Castle today looking across to the Cuillin.

Of course the best view in Britain is supposed to be from Sgurr na Stri looking down on Loch Coruisk towards the Cuillin. Once I get back home I'll post some of my shots from the top:)

loch ard is amazingly beautiful and very very traquil. I came across it during my winter run to Inverness. the scene at the time was absolutely amazing, the only expression i can describe it is "Winter Wonder Land"

and i suspect it will have full character all four seasons.

I know it very well, lovely old cottage on the waterside, which if it wasn't for the erosion would be a cracking place to live :)

Def need to get up to sky sometime soon... To far for a day away on Sat though... and also as usual the weather looks like it's not going to play ball for sat... any day i free up for togging it rains or is gloomy... I think im going to do a wee project on castles of Lothian... I'll see...

www.metcheck.com is my friend... much better than the BBC!

Any other ideas for places though guys... looking for some off the beaten track ideas and hidden gems...
