Scotland... Post your Fav spot to shoot... looking for some new ideas!

I'd suggest Melrose in the Borders. Lovely hills, big viaduct and several ruined abbeys to wander through. Also "Scotts View".

I've decided to do Scotts View this weekend... Prob early tommorrow morning... anyone know if it's better at sunrise or sunset... I'm thinking sunrise...

Dude. You want to take some baggage? Would do it on Sunday if you fancied :D I have a load of pics of it already, bad light though.

It's facing due south so either/or would be the answer to that. Trouble is....at this time of year that's either about midnight or 3 in the morning...:D

buy a boat ticket to go "island hopping" up in the outer hebrides, south harris....deserted, idyllic beaches. my mum says only go in july and you could get nice weather otherwise its grim mostly! (shes from south uist). braemar is beautiful, mar lodge etc (as mentioned above), or Glencoe for dramatic skies, lone bothies and windy roads! maybe not all of them are daytrips but a long weekend up in the hebrides would be a nice project.

Sunrise for definite, the sun sets behind the hills !!!
But it depends what you want. Ifyou go for sunrise and it does not appear ,wander round for the day (plenty in the area) and go back for sunset.

Sorry cant do Sunday... and to be honest I'm a bit of a lone photographer... My plans for Sat is either Castles of Lothian or Scots View then Bamburgh... I'm now favouring the castles to be honest...

I've got allot on on Sunday too... thanks for the offer though.

If I was going up there i'd at least take a week... I've been years ago but dont recall it much... I was too young.

We were in Scotland in late March this year, staying at Tummel Bridge, near Pitlochry.

I took this at Loch Tay:

It's one of my personal faves and I converted it to B&W and framed it on the wall of our lounge. Catch a loch early in the morning with no wind and the reflections are amazing, it still irks me I did get a good shot of a crystal clear Loch Tummel.

I struggle with Lochs at times... never seem to get it right... it's normally the background that lets me down... looks to distant or is just not interesting... I think one thing you def need to do with lochs is walk round them... you miss to much from the car... or at least park up and have a good walk... I also find you see a great view and there is no where to park up the car and walking back along the road with no footway can be almost seuacidal! (sp?)

Never thought of Arran...

Off to bed now... early start tommorrow...

Well I ended up having a great weekend away taking pics which I've not done in ages... However the light was not great and appart from Sat morning I din't get much worth keeping. I spent Sunday carrying out a few tests though... not looked at any of my pics though and the way this weeks panning out dont think i'll get the chance... I'm sick of being constantly busy! It should get quieter after the summer and the wedding and hopefully i'll free up more time... anyways...

Some locations to Suggest for you guys I visited on Sat...

Seacliff Beach... East Lothian - Great seascapes and Tantallon Castle
Borthwich and Cricton Castle - Midlothian
Scotts View- The Borders.
Biers Hill- East Lothian- Climb the tower and get fab views

Hopefully will get a few hours to PP this week and update my flickr.

Anyone any other good location ideas though... started marking up a map and skye is def the hot spot so far!

M

As I assume you are fairly near to Tantallon, you might want to try the beach
at NT606845. A bit tricky early in morning at daybreak to find the path so would suggest when in the area during the day have a quick recce.
Sunrise can be really good, but I would suggest checking position of sun at different times of the year.

I've found a fab location for tantallon... I did a day recon on Sat... It means paying the £2 to get into seacliff... and then driving the car through a field... which you are prob not meant to do... but nothing stopping you and there is a proper sub base landrover track which goes round the field and allong the top of the cliffs at the beach... no gate on the feild either and does not look like its been farmed or used for animals this year!

Not sure when i'll get the chance to go in the next few weeks though... although I might be totally crazy and just go before work one day! I'm in edinburgh!

Dude,

You have 666 posts. Freaky :D

Glad you had a good time.

Gary.

Thanks Gary

Garry can you tell me what's your secret to such sharp crisp looking shots.... every one of your landscapes seems to posses this quality in abundance... I just cant seem to get it... although I do admit I need to get out more at the right times!

And any other good local locations you have found to us?

M

I just make sure I use a tripod, use SHUTTER DELAY MODE, and use SELF TIMER (2 seconds). This eliminates so much minute movements (so I read).

Then a simple Unsharp Mask.

How about Ayrshire - seems to be a forgotten part of Scotland and you can visit in a day from Edinburgh easy. Both beaches here in Troon are mecca's for kite & wind surfers which are challenging to photograph although I can't do it very well. Culzean Castle & Country Park has loads to see & photograph and your not far from one of my favourite haunts, the Galloway Forest Park - Loch Doon & the Stincher Falls are gorgeous. It is also the UK's first Dark Sky Park so you don't even have to go during the day! Not to mention the usual touristy Burns Cottage, Tams Brig and the Old Kirk in Alloway :D

Here's pics to whet your appetite:

A view of my home toon, Troon, with Arran in the Firth of Clyde:

Stincher Falls, Galloway Forest Park:

A cannon at Culzean Castle for something a bit different:

So don't forget us down here, there's loads more to see & photograph than I've listed

Apologies for the apparent hijack but hope it's relevant! I'm heading up to Aviemore from Manchester at the weekend (weather permitting!) and was going to go A82 then the Laggan road. I'm intending to stop at all the usual along the A82 but is there anywhere just off that's well worth the effort? I'll be coming back via the A9 if anyone's got any good suggestions off their too?

Thanks!

I'm going to split the journey and stay overnight somewhere Fort Williamish - does anyone have any cracking places to stay with good sunset/sunrise prospects?

I know the weather will conspire against me but worth a try right? :)

oops wrong post
