My son is 11 in his 1st year of high school , he's just come home with a school magazine with some information about a recent school trip for the upper school.

17 pupils and 4 "lucky" teachers went on a school trip to Iceland  we went to Woburn Safari park.

an advert for next years trip is on the next page.

NEW YORK air trip

The trip will include the Guggenheim ,MOMA ,various galleries the empire state and a broadway show.

I have to say i'm astounded by this, I can't afford for my kids to be going on school trips to New York and Iceland, seems like a nice little jolly for the teachers though, a break to New York out of school funds , perhaps they're training to be MPs:bonk:

We went to Spain on our fourth year school trip. When we returned the there was a slideshow for the parents. One of the pictures showed us all sitting in a bar, with a rather large amount of empty pint glasses stretching out on the table in front of us.....:bonk:

I went to Lanzarote and New York for my college residentials.

In primary school, we spent a week here:

Hathersage in the Peak District :D

What gets me is the astronomical cost. My mates son had the chance of a weeks skiing. THe cost inclusive of the passes etc. was more than a £1,000.00.
Whilst waiting for my youngest to come out from school, I noticed several with signed shirts who were obviuosly leaving today. What ever happened to egg and flour bombs? H&S I suppose, killjoys. :(

Don't forget you are paying a portion of the Teachers price of going. You don't expect them to cough up do you? Ot the school?

I'm not paying anything, the new york trip is over a grand, and they say they have to wear a uniform so everyone is equal, [Jim Royal] Equal my arse [/Jim Royal]

At over £1,000 I think the kids must have been paying for a teacher each.

I spent 3 days there when I was in Yr 6 (5 years ago) We were meant to stay for a week, But everyone got ill :bang:

You're also paying for their first class travel, nights out around town and as many mini bar trips as they can make :D:D:D:D

WOW i was lucky if I got a day to Brid

We were lucky, we got a day to Brid. And a weekend in Northumberland. But that was it.

****in New York?!

Kids don't know they're born! You've got to tell them.

It's hell for the parents, on top of the school trips you've got all the other clubs/teams/societies (for want of a better word) all pushing their annual "trip".

It's not a recent thing though, Fiften years ago I had the choice of the following over the course of my penultimate year at secondary school:
- School activity trip (Spain)
- School ski trip (France)
- School geography field trip (UK)
- Brass Band exchange visit (Germany)
- Venture unit summer expedition (France)

My mum used to roll her eyes every time I bought back details of another trip that I "had to go on".
I think I ended up in Weymouth on holiday with the parents in the end :(

It's not really a jolly though is it.
They've got responsibilty for a buch of other peoples kids, 24hrs a day for the duration of the trip
It may well be an enjoyable and rewarding trip, but it'll be hard work and stressful as well.

We had a trip to the Orkney Islands in the early-mid seventies. Stormy seas on the Pentland Firth, cycling around the island all week in the pouring rain and staying in a youth hostel iirc.

It was ****.

Yeah those jammy teachers 'ey, stuck with the responsibility for awkward teenagers who they are only normally stuck with for a short time at school. Good god, if I was a teacher they would need to pay me danger money before I would agree to take any children anywhere further than the school gate!

Great experience for the kids though, went to German with my school and it was great! The time and organisation it takes to get something like this to happen is immense, good on them I say.

All I got was a trip down the 'blue john' mines in Derbyshire. :D

Kev.

If that is what happens now then things really have changed.

when we went on the SS Uganda the teachers had their own part of the ship and we didn't see them until we got back on the coach to come home.

The only school trip I remember is a trip down a coal mine...........yes you read that right:D
