Guys most of you know I have been floating about the forums for a new camera and I thought I bought one until I realised I have been scammed on eBay buying a second hand 'high end' camera and lens.

I cannot go into details as this is being dealt with by the Police, PP, CC company, and bank.

Lets just say that total amount is in the region of thousands.


I thought I was very internet savvy however I am obviously very impressionable. This person/s was very convincing and very knowledgeable about the products they were fronting with a very good story.

I just want to ensure that everyone on here to be very careful [I am sure you are].

So at the moment I am without thousands of hard earned money and camera. :shake:
 
Are they the ones that say there cheap like £400 but worth like £2000
But ask you to contact them before bidding

Might be the same
Though it was to good to be true
And was close to doing it but didn't
 
Reads like you used Paypal, to be honest mad not to with so many shysters about these days and does offer some protection

Very harsh, but the old adage "if it looks too good to be true it probably is" should always be uppermost in one's mind

Hope it all gets sorted in your favour and you finally get a new camera

No it was an auction and I only saved around £300 off rrp new in the UK.

It was very lightly used, with very convincing photos, layout, and description. So was conversations.
 
But eBay requires you to pay via PayPal, so you should get a full instant refund?

I had similar a while back, although not quite thousands, was close to 900. Had my money back within a day.

Can you tell us a little more? Did she send you a camera? but not the right one? Or you got nothing back? And as suggested, if you used paypal you should be covered. Have you been on to them?

Is this the new 5DMkIII 24-105 you were looking at buying?

Your post doesn't really help in letting people know what to look out for though.

Hope you get it sorted. Shouldn't be a problem, since it's ebay, as long as you followed the rules.
 
I have reported a couple of obvious scams on ebay to do with the 5d mk3 the adds disappeared quite fast

There are various ways to pay, but PayPal was mentioned so there should not be a problem unless the seller managed to fob off with vaguely plausible excuses for not sending until the disputes time limit had passed.

I have had one worrying incident but only £50 where the seller was 'on holiday' (so why end a sale then?) but guaranteed to despatch the first Monday on return - but nothing happened all that week.
In truth I think they were hiding the fact the item was actually being sent from China to order while pretending it was in the UK so as not to put people off.
This did end OK though - just in time.
 
The time limit is 45 days. I dont think anyone is silly enough to wait that long for someone to dispatch goods. If they are, well.....

Hmmm, cant help thinking if you only saved £300 on a used item on Ebay which is worth into the thousands brand new from a "normal" UK retailler you've been a bit of a divvy in the first place and got auction fever.
 
The dispute process is quite easy with paypal - did one recently for an "item never received" claim and got the money refunded in full in about 10 days. The important thing is to be aware of any time limits and be sure to diary them.
 
Did you not paid with PayPal?

I bought a lens but its not arrive after a month, took about a week for PayPal to review and refund me the money.
 
If I was spending "thousands", I would rather buy from a retailer, not ebay, especially if the savings are only £300.
Sorry to hear of your predicament though, and hope you get it sorted.
For this post to be helpful to anyone else to avoid scams we need to know the basics of the scam. No need to mention names etc though.
 
Indeed, I'm reluctant to use ebay at all in the main. I limit my use to very small sums, like the £40 for a guitar pickup. Legit stores only otherwise on there for me, like Regatta for walking boots, etc.

Been a few auctions on eBay selling a photograph of the product. Makes it a little more complicated with Paypal as you do receive the item.

Sure someone on MSE got caught/reported a scam like that recently.

Would love to hear the full details. I do fell for you, I know I would be devastated. It will make it hard for you to buy on there in future, on top of the loss of cash. Hope you get it back.

I really would love to know more though, the description that was posted up, whether or not they sent you anything, like an empty box or another less expensive model, or you just got completely blanked.

You can't warn us about anybody or pass on any information. I sort of fail to see the point as you are just making yourself look like a bit of a soft touch. :)

I actually have a lot of sympathy for the fact that he's lost money, but none at all for posting about it when there are legal implications.

It's about time that people realised that the internet really isn't the best place to spill your woes if you are suing someone or the police are trying to investigate a crime committed against you.
 
He didn't give any details, he hasn't done anything to hurt his case. His first post says it all, he merely warns to be careful when buying on the likes of ebay. I see nothing wrong with that, and he has also said he will give more details once it is sorted. Won't you be that little bit extra careful when you hit ebay next after reading this? Especially when reading descriptions and checking seller feedback scores? Of course we've heard horror stories before, but this serves as a reminder.

How come that seller still has 100% feedback and there's no indication on that sale that the winning bidder paid up, or left negative feedback? Or did they really want pictures of a watch for stupid money??
 
Be careful with the model numbers as well. There was an ebay auction for a Canon D60 that was doing very well. Prices were up to the level expected for the much newer 60D.
 
Upsetting as it is but spending "thousands" on e-bay :shrug:

I have sold something costing that amount of money but it was locally and face-to-face and amounts changed hands there and then.

Ive spent tens of thousands on ebay and had very few problems.
Ive bought 5 cars, lots of cameras and lenses plus various other things.

Use common sense, research your seller, use the appropiate payment methods and you wont have a problem.

Infact Ive had more problems buying a camera on here than I have had on ebay.

Exactly. Just as likely to get scammed on a forum and no where near as protected if you do. It is not eBay at fault, it is the seller and that seller can use any means necessary to sell stuff.
The difficulty is knowing if the seller is good but again eBay feedback can help there more than most selling sites.

That is disgusting! Surely the buyer would win the ebay case though as the seller has listed it in the watch category. Makes you realise how sick some people are.

BTW, I've had very few issues buying and selling on ebay over the years, as others have pointed out...you need to have your wits about you. Always use Paypal and pay using a credit card if possible.
