Decided I would bring my old Scalextric down from the attic for my boys. It's been boxed away since about 1985.

Had to pick up a couple of new cars as the old Mexico Escorts need fixing up.

I've just worked out that there's over 100 feet of track

Could be busy this afternoon :)

Karen would have a hairy fit if she came home to the whole lot set up lol. This is about half of it.

My house isn't as big as the one I grew up in so I think I'll just do a small circuit for now.

Brings back happy memories Phil, enjoy pal.

My father ran a model shop in the 70s, and as they were continually offered used track & stuff, we ended up with 'quite a bit' of track, chicanes, power packs, cars & controllers. All gone a long time ago, and likewise our sons stuff has been moved on. Great fun while it works - PITA when there's problems with contacts & connections.

Hope you have a great afternoon with it.

Looks like a couple of bits could do with a wire wool rub on the contacts but given how much there is I'll just bin any duff bits. I need to find a plug first as my dad must have nicked the plug off the power pack before it got boxed up.

Ive got some that I had set up in the loft at our old place, but it got damp so rusted. I managed to get some of it cleaned up. Fist i tried oil on wire wool which just makes a mess. Then on a hot day i sprayed it in wheel cleaner which is basicaly hydrochloric acid, and then rinsed it off. That seemed to help but I'd rather not had to.

We've bought a second hand sport set since which is sooooo much easier to put together. But have you checked out the prices of cars etc? Loads of money for what is a basically a motor and plastic, although the new rc ones sound a bit cool.

Your escorts are worthy a wee bit even in their used condition, mk1's by scalextric are highly desireable!
P.S - your in trouble if you ever start to look at the offerings from FLY models

blast from the past phil lol i used to sit and play racing my bro for hours on end yea fire some photos up setup

TP meet at Phil's house - Norfolk Mafia style (no cameras required!)

Got given a set to play yesterday but effectively for me and my eldest son to play with :) Just a basic track but been playing a fair bit this afternoon with my near 4 year old - he loves and so do I - my wife is going to regret being so nice! :)

Enjoy, your set-up sounds potentially excellent - I'm sure they will all love it!

We're racing :)

Found a couple of motors in the box that work so I can get the Escorts going with some new brushes and tyres. One has headlights but I've not tested whether those work.

Found some F1 cars too. The black and gold John Player Special Lotus and the blue 6 wheeled March Ford. These are from 1977.

Had both the March and JPS Lotus in my set back in the day, loved the lotus with its back end stepping out going around the fast bends, brings back great memories

Probably the same set. It was the 400 set. Elongated figure of 8 with bridge and banked curves ?

I never had Scalextric as a kid but I do remember a small battery powered figure of 8 track with a couple of minis. When my eldest was born in 91 I bought my 1st set, with Sierra Cosworths, then bought several Sierra Cosowrths in various liveries , most of which never got used. I've since bought various other cars to add to my collection again unused. I've also subsequently bought a few other sets, still unused and added to my collection. (I think I have 6 sets, 5 of which are unused and over 30 cars, also mostly unused) I bought some track and cars off a workmate when his kids had grown up and didn't use it anymore, so gained a few more cars to use, plus I used to buy 2nd hand track from a local toy store.
It's all stored away and sadly no room to set up a decent track anymore.
My sons were eventually bought their own sets and they haven't seen the light of day in quite a few years, I think the cat would have fun with them though.

You can teach the youngsters some reality and demonstrate the lack of a pause button mid race........:D

Funny you mention that.

I bought the kids a PS4 for Christmas and it's not really been used yet :)

Loved Scalextric as a kid. Had a mate who had a massive amount of track and we'd combine all that we could to make a ridiculous course that spanned two large rooms at his house (wouldn't even fit in my entire house!). Had loads of cars from a Mini through tourinc cars, F1 cars, an old escort and even a racing truck (that was unstable as hell!)

Ahhhh - that's the one we had too :D
(OK technically it was my brother's but I enjoyed racing it too)

BTW Still waiting to see a photo of it up and running Phil . . . taps fingers ;)

I only did a small oval to check it all worked and I had to put it away earlier today :(

I'll set up a bigger one in the lounge in the next day or so and get some pics :)

That's what we did.

The house I grew up in had 3 floors and the top level was just one massive room.

My mates had to pack their scalextric up after playing with it so they brought it round to our house to make one massive track. Over the years it just got boxed up and put away and I just ended up with the lot.

It was great room. Once we outgrew the scalextric - in came the snooker table / stereo / fridge etc. (y)

My first scalextric set was "mighty metros" although what i really wanted was "night stages"

As i got older i transitioned from scalextric cars into scx, ninco and fly as the technology was fa superior. I believe the newer stuff to come out of hornby is alot better though!

The best cars i owned were my Fly venturi LM & Marcos
My most treasured car and worth a bit of money now is a Ninco Mclaren F1 LM road version

When I was a youth,I had the attic room in a big three storey terraced house, my Dad built a track that went all around the room and deep under the roof, he rigged lights up and we landscaped it all. We had a high speed bank curve spiral going around a small mountain. It was great fun then and probably would be now.

Not had the best day today after losing the last of my dogs, my ever Faithfull 15 year old collie ,but this thread as cheered me up and got me thinking back in to the past, I remember my father also building me and my brother a big set up ,we eventually got a TCR set and I remember spending hours with them,i know at one point you realised you could only go so fast with them before they flew of the track but you kept trying.

I cant look at any of his photos at the moment, I will be honest this loss as devastated me,i miss my others but this one is bad, he came everywhere with me,he was fine on xmas day but in the evening his breathing was bad ,he was on meds for heart failure but we didn't expect him to go so early,i was up all night with him until our vets opened at 9.00am longest night I have had for a long time and very upsetting, some say its only a dog but he was more than that to me and I am not afraid to admit it ,good thread on the scalextric it certainly brought back some memories for me ,just spent a good 15 mins on the phone to my brother about ours

Whip the magnets out Phil. Far more fun without than with!

Sympathies to you Den and Phil, they are a part of the family and a huge loss. Lost our much loved Yorkie 1 1/2 years ago and said we would never ever have another one, we couldn't go through the loss again. Anyway, Daisy, is now 2 and a big part of our lives, she helped us get over the loss and she worked her way into our hearts very quickly. You cant replace a dog but you can get attached to a new one. Hope you settle soon mate.

The cars I got for the kids the other day were the first with magnets. All mine were too old to have them.

Sounds very similar to my Skye. It was his heart / breathing (hacking). Took him to the vet in the evening and they said the sooner the better so they suggested we took him home and spoiled him for one last night which we did and then had him pts in the morning. A horrible night.
