Sarah's 52 - FINAL WEEK - "Texture"

Liking the re-shoot very much. If I was doing the PP, I think I'd have added some saturation though, just to bring the paint out a bit more within the shot. But that's just me...!

Thank you KG, John and Kdot. I'm glad that I re-did that one.
In fact I've had a really fun day with the camera today and I've even got Week 39 in a day early

Passion was an interesting theme and trying to keep it within the "safe for work" parameters added a bit of a challenge too.
Unusually though, it was a theme where I came up with some ideas straight away. Passion Fruit / Passion Flower were the first 2 things that came to mind, but I couldn't find either to photograph.

Other symbols of passion . . . red roses and flames  hmmmmm but how to combine the two????

I didn't fancy torching a bouquet in the back garden so this is what I came up with.
Hopefully better than last week's awful effort.

Week 39 - "Passion (edited version)"

Lessons Learnt

A big lesson for me today.
The last few weeks I either haven't had much time or haven't had a clear idea of what to do and relied on luck.
This week I had both inspiration and time and it's reminded me that photography is fun and that's as much a part of this challenge as improving my skills.

Edit : Grrrrrr Just noticed that the highlights on the coals are really irritating at this resolution. On the larger version, they just sort of merged into the oof b/ground so you hardly noticed them. I'll try to fix it or put one of my alternative versions up shortly. . . Fixed!!! :)

Oh lovely image Sarah. It fits the theme nicely, although I have a really vivid picture of you hanging a bouquet of roses in the garden and applying a blow torch to them :D...

As for the shots. I think the second works better, making the rose more prominent an reducing the white under the glass. The only thing is you've cut the edge of the reflection off, but that's a minor niggle. The first one has too much white texture in the foreground for me.

I did see all three shots last night and agree that the highlights on the first were a problem and I like how you've fixed that with the PP. I am torn between the two edited versions though...

I do think the last has stronger composition, just a shame you've had to crop the reflection to get it.

Reshoot of Fresh Start - Excellent simple idea that I can't believe none of us thought of last week! A vast improvement on your first shot - I might have been tempted to loose some of the forgroung of the pallette but it does work as it is

Ooh, I like your reshoot for Fresh Start - I agree, more Sat might help it. But brilliant Compositon etc. You take some amazing photographs!

Passion - 1st shot for me, and it is fab!

 That blow torch could have really made for an interesting shot, but I was afraid that the neighbours might have me carted away.

I'm with you on the choice of shots. I definitely preferred the second composition but I just couldn't quite get all of the reflection in at that angle. I was using an artists' canvas (see the link to the other shot) with the cellophane still on it to make it reflective and whatever I did it just slightly fell off the edge. That was why I ended up with the first image.

I wondered if anyone had sneaked a look last night. I decided that it was all a bit too messy with the before & after plus the alternative in the thread, so I had a tidy up this morning ;)

I can't decide between the two either. As I said above, I picked the first shot because the reflection was better but the second definitely has more impact IMO. I just needed 1 more inch of canvas to fit the reflection on :bang:

Glad you think that the second fresh start is an improvement. I'm not too sure about cropping it though. I see what you mean about it taking up too much foreground, but I quite like the curves at the front of the palette.

Thank you Shorty!
I wouldn't go so far as to say that my photos are amazing, but you're very kind to say so.

I love both. Really do prefer the impact of the second, and the issue with the reflection is such a non issue I wouldn't worry about it. Great stuff from you yet again

Wow, Sarah - you've been busy, and it sounds as though you've loved every minute of it. :)

Fresh Start - Reshoot: Great idea, my only slight niggle is a sneaking feeling that you could have changed the angle of the pallette to make better use of its lovely curves, eg tilting one side up a little, so it made more of a connection with the canvas. The composition's just a little bit disjointed for me. Sorry if that sounds really picky and mean when you've gone and done a whole new photo to replace your filler shot of the web.

Passion: I love the colour of the rose and the subtle reflection. It's a clever take on the theme, and I can quite see why you didn't torch a whole bouquet in the garden. :D

The composition is very similar to the reshoot for Fresh Start, and I'm finding this one a bit disjointed as well. I'm really sorry, because again it's a great idea but doesn't do justice to the skills you've been showing us week in, week out. I still give you full marks, though, for the idea and having the tenacity to recrop and adjust highlights.

Jean, you know that I'd far prefer honesty to you telling me they're great when you think they're not. I've already said it, but thank you again for saying what you think :)

I actually think that you're onto something with "fresh start". I did try a couple where the two were slightly more connected, but then decided to go all arty with a bit more dof . . . a canvas isn't all that interesting on its own, but perhaps I should have gone with the first shot.

It's a shame "passion" didn't do it for you. I rather liked both versions of that one, but I do see what you're getting at with it.

 Let's just hope that I get a bit of that magic back for you next week.

Smashing pic...you are back on form!!!:clap: If I had to choose it would be no2

Fresh Start reshoot, much better.

Passion I like the colours in the first one and the composition in the second, so I'm not at all awkward am I.

First off . . . thank you, thank you, thank you to Jill for pulling a brilliant week’s themes out of the hat!
I absolutely loved the water theme and I’ve been itching for a reshoot week for ages!

. . . and secondly, before I build expectations up too much, I should point out that brilliant themes don’t necessarily equal brilliant photos. Some of my best weeks photographically have been with themes that I hated, but that doesn’t take away from the amount of fun that I had with these. :D

Two totally different images from me this week.

Reshoot

For reshoot, I really wanted to do something to show how much I’ve learnt since I started this 52.
For those of you who remember the Rubik’s cube from the “colour” week, this is my new take on that theme. It’s been a week that I’ve wanted to redo for a while.

It’s not a stunning image by any means, but it really sums up a lot of learning points.

Since starting this, I’ve learnt that food photography is something that really inspires me and is an area I’d like to explore further. I’ve also discovered the joys of utilising DoF since getting my SLR (although this doesn’t quite come through in the finished image)

The biggest learning point for me though, has been in starting to get to grips with Photoshop. I know that I still have a long way to go, but it sat in a cupboard from Christmas until about 3 months ago and at least I’m using it now.
This is something that I wouldn’t have had a clue how to do when “colour” first came out of the hat.

Water

As I said already, I absolutely loved this theme! My only problem has been in deciding what to do . . . I must have had a million different ideas for this and it was really hard picking just one.

In the end I decided to go for the simplest interpretation. I feel that there have been some weeks when I’ve over-thought and over-complicated things. Sometimes the simplest composition has the most impact, so this week there are only two elements in the composition.
I also wanted to go for something that would give me a challenge . . . white background, clear glass, clear water . . . yep that was a challenge alright!

Far from perfect, but good fun and it really got me thinking about lighting and composition.

Week 40 Part I - Reshoot of "Colour"

Week 40 Part II - "Water"

:D No lessons learnt . . . I think I already covered them off above.

Colour - interesting! I'll have to come back to this one  :D

Water - excellent idea. Love the interpretation on this and how you managed to capture it.

It's more of a personal milestone for me, rather than a great image so don't worry - you're not obliged to like it.

Glad that water was more to your taste - although it looks a bit dull now compared to some of the great shots I've seen for this week :(

I love the PHOTO for the reshoot, but sorry the text just ruins it for me :( Really sorry - can we see the pic without the wording/green background? I know what you were aiming for with this, but doesn't work for me.

Water - I do like :) maybe to possible have shot it from a lower angle, cos it's hard to see the water in the 'middle' bit of the spilled bits - although MORE than likely my laptop screen/angle of the screen!

Otherwise, nice shots :D

Here you go. Here's one of the shots making up the background . . .

I suspect you're right with the water. Clear water on white - not very easy to see :)

Reshoot2.jpg

Well I like your reshoot because I totally get where you are coming from - I'm not great with the PP either so it's good to remind yourself how far you've come ;)

Water - I'm sorry but it just lacks interest for me - probably because it's all so white. I think this could have worked better with a different BG... I'm not sure what though

Major catch up :D

Fresh Start reshoot: Love the concept and the execution! Very nice idea!!

Passion: #2 for me - the closer version works better imho - more intimate, more passionate! Very good

Colour reshoot: Clever - and way beyond my processing skills . Great idea and shot! I'm impressed :)

Water: yep a simple and elegant shot! Well lit and very theme fitting :)

An enjoyable set of images there Sarah :)

Hi Sarah!

Sorry i've not found your 52 before, and what a Gem it is!
some absolutely fantastic shots! I like the way you have created your own style with the dark backgrounds and high-contrast foregrounds like "mono" & "easy" . how do you go about making shots like that? do you have a little studio-type setup with a dark backdrop?
Food, exposed and grunge are also some of my favourites! well done. :)

looking at your recent ones; I love the passion shot, with the fire in the background it really gives a nice warm feel to the photo. fantastically done!

water: I love the composition and the white surface, but I can't help but be distracted slightly by the edges of the green border. maybe that's just me  what do you think?

"colour" shot is good. I also prefer it without the text, but see that it is slightly blurry.
I hope you don't mind, but the EXIF says it was shot at 1/10" with ISO200. Maybe it would have been better moving it somewhere a bit lighter and using a higher shutter speed, with maybe a ISO400? it would have far more impact. again, tell me what you think...

I think that you original colour shot with the Rubix cube is far better IMHO. Infact, it is probably my favourite (i'm an 80's child :) )

I look forward to following your 52. some great shots! nice work! :)

water : simple yet effective...

only comment to make is that I feel like the glass reflection at the bottom of the frame is too tight to the border, especially with the blank space at the top...just a minor niggle though...

:)

Colour, love the strawbs... not sure about the text... maybe a bit much for me... and covers too much of the image underneath..

Water, I like it, and you've caught the water well. Nice and simple.

I like your colour shot - different!!

Water, sometimes the best shots are the simplest ones, and this is spot on for me

Hey Sarah - you've been a busy girl. :)

I think anybody doing reshoots is brave. I haven't managed a single one yet. :(

Reshoot of Colour: I love this. Yes, it's bright, in-your-face and, imo, great fun. Lovely and a million miles away from your Rubik's cube (which was ok, btw :)) Well done on the Photoshop work involved in it, too. You must be really chuffed with how that's going. :)

Reshoot of Water: What a contrast between these two. :) This is so simple (visually - not to set up!) understated and elegant. You rose to the challenge - and conquered. Well done.:clap::clap:

Thank you. . . I know colour reshoot won't be to everyone's taste, but it really was to mark what I'd learnt so far.

Water : I have a feeling that opinions on this will vary depending on people's monitors.
At home on my lappy it looks quite good. On my work monitor it really is washed out and far too white to make out any details . . . so I think I can guess which monitor is most like yours :D

Thank you Jammy . . . especially for taking the time to look through all of them.
The black backgrounds are a mix. The early ones just have black card for the background and in later ones I've invested in some black fabric as a backdrop. The set-up varies from my kitchen work top to the spare bedroom depending on where the lighting works best.

Green borders? I don't know what happened there. I'm sure they were black when I loaded it up to Photobucket  . It wasn't deliberate anyway.

Colour. Absolutely agree with your comments on the background image. TBH I'd always intended on adding the text on top so I was very lazy when I shot these :$
(I wasn't intending on showing them as they were originally)

Thank you.
It was quite a busy weekend and I deliberately wanted to do 2 totally different things.
I think you're being too kind with colour, but yes it was good fun.

Hi Sarah...I'm not sure about the colour shot, I'm in to minds the idea is a good one but it just don't work with the green and such bold letters... it could still work with a different colour and a slightly transparent lettering...

Water it's a good idea again but blends in to the background a little to much for me...still good though...

The reshoot for fresh start is an excellent and original take on the theme :)

Passion i prefer part 2, using the open fire for the b/g was a fantastic idea :D

Love the use of the writing in the colours reshoot and water is a fantastic idea

Colour reshoot: Clever - and way beyond my processing skills . Great idea and shot! I'm impressed :) and mine too

Water: yep a simple and elegant shot! Well lit and very theme fitting :) Not my favourite but well done nonetheless.

An enjoyable set of images there Sarah :)

Lovely set of pictures, and you are learning so quickly too. Well done Sarah

So sorry for not responding sooner. Been stuck in bed with flu for most of the week . . . but I'm feeling better and it's time to catch up.

Not to worry. As I said I think that colour reshoot is going to be a bit Marmite.
Looking back at water, it does seem to blend a bit too much. Probably would have worked better with a coloured liquid, but I'm not sure that it would say "water" then :|
Maybe something to try if we get another reshoot though.

The reshoot for fresh start is an excellent and original take on the theme :)

Glad that you enjoyed. I don't seem to have too many problems getting ideas, but I'm looking forward to a week when I can spend just a little more time executing them though

Lovely set of pictures, and you are learning so quickly too. Well done Sarah

Jill thank you.
Very kind of you to say so.
Learning was always my main aim with this 52 and when I look back I think I can definitely see progress . . . that's not to say that I don't have a long way still to go though!

Anyway, thank you again.
I suppose I'd better get on with loading this week's shot up now :D

 Strangely I rather liked this theme. . . seems like I'm on my own with this but yes, I actually found it quite interesting and inspiring.

I've been stuck in bed with flu for most of the last week (what I first thought was just a cold took a turn for the worst) and unless you wanted to see photos of snotty tissues :gag: or my bedroom ceiling I haven't had much to offer. Although it has given me plenty of time to think about the theme.

I'm keeping my original couple of ideas quiet in the hope that I might get a chance to reshoot or use them for another theme.
(And I'm even having the crazy thought of doing this all over again next year :cuckoo:)

However, I did have one simpler thought that didn't require as much effort as what I'd originally planned. I managed to get out yesterday and pick up some of the props I needed - namely a packet of fruit and nuts from the supermarket and some nuts of the other kind from the DIY store.

So here's my take on "out of context" . . . "mixed nuts".

Week 41 - Out of Context

MixedNuts1.jpg

Technically it's not great. I left it until this evening when the light was rubbish and the quality has really suffered as a result. I hope it gets the idea across though.

The high contrast and harsh light from the flash is the effect that I was going for. However, with a touch more light available I would have liked to use a smaller aperture to get the writing on the packet more in focus and a lower ISO for less noise.

I feel like I'm making excuses too often lately.
Over the last few weeks I've been standing still or even going backwards so I promise to try to get back on form for next week.
I don't seem to have any problems deciding what I want to shoot, but recently I've been starting to struggle with actually making the ideas a reality :(

Don't be so hard on yourself - this is the best Out of Context shot I've seen so far!

Great idea - ok maybe the lighting could use a bit of work but it's got everything else going for it. Great choice of background.

I know what you mean about making excuses and feeling like you're not moving forwards but we're in the home straight now. I think we all need a bit of a boost having done this for 41 weeks now. I have no idea how people make it to the end of a 365...

That's very good! And I'll have to agree, it's photographically the best of us so far! Nice one

Sarah - I hope you're feeling better. :)

Your idea for Out of Context is excellent, and I also think you've been a bit hard on yourself over it. But, then, that's the sort of attitude that's taken your photography up a good number of notches in the time you've been doing this Challenge. Look back over the whole thread, rather than just an odd week or two, because the trend is month-on-month improvement. If there are any blips, you've learned from them, and a seasoned pro would be proud of some of the stuff you've posted.:thumbs::thumbs:

There is absolutely NO WAY that I could commit to a 365. I don't know how they do it. :D

Thank you for your kind words. I'm amazed that you think this is the best shot so far . . . I like the concept, but I still keep seeing the flaws in it.

TBH I think the combination of feeling ill this week and ANOTHER shot that I'm not completely happy with has got me on a bit of a downer.
I haven't been at this for the whole 41 weeks, but even in the time that I've been at it it's disappointing when I feel like I'm still getting silly things wrong.

That's very good! And I'll have to agree, it's photographically the best of us so far! Nice one

KG Thank you!
That's another much needed boost this week. :)

Sarah - I hope you're feeling better. :)

Thank you Jean.
I know that I'm my own worst critic, but it would be so nice to look at a shot one week and think "wow! I'm really happy with that."

I know that I've come on leaps and bounds since starting this. When I first started I would have been over the moon with any of the shots that I've taken in the past few weeks. Ironically the more I learn, the more I can see to find fault with. Especially when I see some of the fantastic photos that other people have put on their 52s.

Your encouragement means a lot though. Let's see if I can get that "wow shot" next week.

EDIT : And yes I'm starting to feel a lot better thanks. I've had this for just over a week now, so I'll be glad to see the back of it.

The doctor has been as helpful as ever. I have some flu symptoms but not all, so it could either be Swine Flu; seasonal Flu or a very heavy cold. No way to tell without testing which they're not doing at the moment

Makes me wonder why I bothered ringing the surgery. :bang:
I wouldn't normally for a cold / flu, but there are a couple of pregnant ladies at work so if there was a chance of it being Swine Flu I thought it best to get advice.

Chin up Sarah... I think it's very good, and the look suits it very well indeed and bang on theme too... Glad you're feeling better... I know what you mean, god knows how the 365'ers keep up...

I missed your water shot Sarah, talk about setting yourself a challenge. You've succeeded in getting a very good shot where all the elements are distinguishable. It just doesn't do much for me though... I struggled like hell with this theme and I suspect my lack of inspiration has coloured my view so apologies.

Now Out of Context.... brilliant, such a clever idea (which I should have thought of) and really well taken again. Love it.

:plusone:

Tut, tut, Sarah. You know what happens around here when people put themselves down ....... me and JG send the boys round :bat::bat::bat:

I also think it's the best interpretation of the theme this week and a shot you'd have been VERY proud of a couple of months ago.

:clap::clap: :love: :hug:
