Daily Sarah's 365 31st December 2013 - The End! (CAN'T BELIEVE I'VE ACTUALLY FINISHED!!)

Finally finished looking through the x91 pages from start to finish - superb work Sarah and an excellent variety of subject matters.. :)

I'm hoping to start my 365 challenge next week although as a learnie DSLR user I think I'm going to have to brace myself for all the critique.. lol

Good luck with yours Marcus, hope you are putting it on here & I will try to keep up with it. If you make it into a learning experience, it will improve your photography & it really makes you see images where you might not have done before. I did mine to get out of the rut I'd got into being a cycling photographer & rarely shooting anything else due to time constraints & I've really enjoyed it.
One bit of advice would be to make a list of things to shoot so that on days when you lack inspiration or ideas, you've got a few things listed.
On the critique front, if you want it, just ask, people will be more than happy to help.

Thanks Sarah - yes im aiming to start mine next week (for the start of the new month).. I've started on my list already - a lot of them are weather dependant so I need to have a think on backup plans for indoor images... thankfully between yours and a few other 365 threads i've been looking at you've all given me plenty of ideas for things to try :)

Keep up the great work and I look forward to continue following your 365 journey

Food is always a good indoor shot - fruits, veg, cakes and dinners

Really like the spiders web - has that avenue of trees featured before?

Take the conkers indoors - they should keep the spiders out :)

Every shot a winner in this thread! Really consistent standard.

Conkers remind me of my youth too (although I still haven't grown up and have no intention of doing so). We used to drill and insert glue etc to harden up the conker - Cheating but what do you expect from public schoolboys!

Do you know that playing conkers is no longer allowed for health and safety reasons - How utterly ridiculous is that!!

Robin, know exactly what you mean about the conkers, my son was exactly the same & my Dad actually blew up the conker trees at his school to get the conkers off, this was with the aid of the science master! You are right, must be the public school as they went to our local one as well :)
Thanks again for your kind comments. Have to say the 365 is I think improving my work, or at the least it's really making me think outside my normal box.

^^^^
What compact do you use, Sarah?

That baby's skin is so perfect that it doesn't look real!

Thanks, Jim

That Panasonic LX5 looks quite big as a compact.

Mainly because it has a sensor that's quite a bit bigger than most compacts ;)

....But then consequently has the advantage of a big sensor which Geoff describes.

However, for my purposes a large compact would defeat the point of having a compact. and of course it begs the question whether my trousers would stay up with a heavy compact on my belt and as Mick Jagger says: "You wouldn't want my trousers to fall down now would ya?"

This is one of my better shots on my compact and, even if I say it myself, it ain't at all bad....

Ooops! I probably shouldn't post any photos in Sarah's 365 thread.

it's always a trade off between size and IQ - most compacts are fine in good light for shots printed up to a certain size - in low light you need a bigger sensor - everyone is waiting for that RAW capable small sensor compact with a 50x zoom and great low light noise characteristics - but until they change the laws of physics we're pretty much stuck with that compromise I guess :)

It's not a huge camera & fits in my handbag quite nicely. Dimensions are 4 1/4 by 2 1/4" and depth including lens is 2". It's not brilliant in low light, but yesterday, on a sunny/overcast day in a restaurant in a conservatory, the light was lovely. Plus, Izzy, at the moment does have the most beautiful skin, she's got over the milk rash she had a while ago.

It's fine to post that on here & for a compact it's a pretty decent shot. I am however waiting for that compact Jim has just said about :)

I don't carry a handbag! My compact lives in its leather case on the belt of my trousers. It's about 1/4 inch smaller and considerably less re your compact's 2 inch lens protrusion. Also weight will be affected by size. But different cameras suit different lifestyles etc.

Thanks for bothering to post your compact's size - Useful for me to know

Am looking forward to your next shot.... :)

That's the trouble with men, no handbags :) they make it so much easier to carry camera gear, I've even got a couple I can get my Dslr in with a spare lens :) Having said that men can be useful for carrying stuff if I take out more gear, my hubby & son make great sherpas :)

Excellent quality for a compact pic Sarah - I don't think the little-un was to impressed with what she was being fed by the look of her expression.. lol

Only x3 more days till I start my 365 challenge - eek!

....LOL

Actually I do sometimes but not often wear a shoulder bag and I also keep my money etc in a red leather 'man-purse' and not a wallet. So I think I am in touch with my female side (happily divorced, single, and toxic bachelor nowadays).

The reason I originally got a compact was because I got fed up with lugging around two EOS-1 bodies (pre-digital) and four lenses plus filters etc etc. For planned sorties I'm now planning to return to one EOS body (70D) plus two L lenses which will be much more manageable with the right harness or bag.

I'll always keep a compact at the ready - The finer technical points of perfect photography isn't everything - I take pictures rather than photographs.

The 365 seems very challenging but very expanding - I might have a go when I have some DSLR gear and/or a new compact.

Marcus, sh'e not at all impressed by anything that isn't Mum at the moment, she's a right little devil :) So what have you planned for your starting shot?

Robin, nice to see you are in touch with your feminine side :)
I know what you mean about hauling kit, when I was running my cycle photography business, hauling the kit about was a bit of a pain but I could usually park where I was taking the shots most of the time, so not too bad, but trips to the velodrome made me feel like a pack mule :)
I tend to travel a bit lighter nowadays, if I've planned a shoot I just take what I need, but holidays & weekends away I tend to take more photography kit than clothing & stuff for myself. We are off to the Cotswolds for a few days soon & there will be more photography gear & cycling kit for hubby in the car than anything else :)

Not to sure which shot im going to do yet - got a list of a dozen or so different ideas so see what the weathers like on Tuesday and what takes my fancy

I think it works quite well - like the reflection of the sunset against the water and the sun doesn't over-power the image to much either :)

Thank you both. I'm ok with the composition, but the highlights in the sky have blown & s I'm shadows are a bit flat. It needs some work.
Luckily I know a couple of really good landscape photographers on facebook who have promised to help me online so I don't have to go on a course.

Must admit when I looked at the EXIF I was a little surprised to see no -ve EV compensation at all to give that little leeway on the highlight recovery.

Or perhaps some bracketed shots and blend them ?

Jim
