Daily Sarah's 365 31st December 2013 - The End! (CAN'T BELIEVE I'VE ACTUALLY FINISHED!!)

Those old buildings are fascinating (we have some along the canal in Nottingham I will most likely be revisiting this year!) and you have done yours justice. I HATE it when they have the audacity to build things like that right behind buildings which would look so much better without them - how blooming dare they! :D

Nice work Sarah , I love only buildings..............Would look lovely in monochrome !!

Thanks Vince, I do have a shot from a few years ago of this that I converted to mono, but it doesn't quite have the same impact of the colour shot, maybe due to the nice red of the old bricks and the tatty green paint.

+1 if it's in the shot - or actually for the monstrosity behind that lovely old mill building not to be there at all ;)

EDIT: - meant to ask what lens ? (not much info. in EXIF)

Jim, EXIF for you. Camera is 5D MkIII, lens is the 24-105mm f4L IS USM, 9 stop filter on it to slow things down.
ISO 100
Apeture f11
Exposure 25 seconds.

As for the monstrosity, not just behind, but all around it unfortunately.

Will be very interesting to see the results. Most of the 365's seem to be just a bunch of unimaginative images that the photographer has forced themselves to take! :bang: Will be very interesting if anyone can break free from this trap!

I considered doing a Photo52, but I struggle to stick to a schedule of any kind!

Good Luck! I look forward to seeing the completed project.

Thank you, I hope I can put forward a different, hopefully interesting shot each day. Most of the landscapes will be around my locality as eventually I would like to produce a book of local views and places of interest. So in part the project is to make me get out and take the images.

Thanks Sam, good luck with the buildings on the canal in Nottingham, hubby & I were planning on coming up there for a day in the summer, so will have to bring my camera.

Thanks Sarah - would never have guessed about the ND use :) - did you need to correct perspective at all in PP or were you far enough away to minimise it ?

Yes, I did correct the perspective, it was level as I was using the tripod, but the verticals were converging. It's also been run through Nik photo effex to add a bit of polish.
I have to admit to really enjoying post processing work.

The old building is nice Sarah, good use of a long exposure. I would probably have liked to see the whole of the building behind but understand why you left it out.

morning sarah... those pesky dinos TOO RIGHT!! great humour...

as for the mill, great effort for the river...not sure if its been mentioned as its early for me... but the branch on the RHS and the whitworth? factory... shame these couldn't be cloned away so there was a clearer area around the mill because you've got such a great shot.. nature and economic factors encrouch yet again..

Nice work, I'd have liked to see it wider, but if it's just modern industrial building either side, then no thanks.

Glad you enjoyed Roary :) As for cloning, unfortunately, everything is built onto this, there is nothing clear to work from, so it would just look unatural :)

Nice work, I'd have liked to see it wider, but if it's just modern industrial building either side, then no thanks.

Yep, wider view is all modern industrial :(

Oh excellent idea, would have liked to see the front prow of the boat in focus too though. Really like your sea

Had to do a bit of a double take on this one...you know when you glance at something and then realise there is a lot more there than you thought? Really well executed!

Veyr nicely done indeed Sarah, like that a lot. You have put a lot of effort into that.

Same here Sam  but love the take on it - great idea

Oooh I like fire - you weren't willing to sacrifice the lego man to burn the whole boat then? No dedication to the cause

Really good idea and well executed - like it

That is great Sarah.. love the creativity here!

Thanks Sarah, had a few goes, but it just wasn't quite working yesterday. Taking a humorous shot whilst feeling anything but doesn't make it easy.

Thanks Sam

Very creative indeed - well done

Thanks Jim

Veyr nicely done indeed Sarah, like that a lot. You have put a lot of effort into that.

Thanks Matt.

Same here Sam  but love the take on it - great idea

Well, one of the vikings I was using got a melted horn on one side.

Clever idea - I like it!

Thanks Lynn

"Return to Sanity"

Very simple shot today and one I've taken before (so feel a bit of a cheat), but I had to pop over and see hubby at lunch time, so thought I'd try to photograph something on the journey home & as I had to drive past this and I love the story of this little monument it's today's shot.

So here is the history, written on a post next to the monument, which will explain the return to sanity, as for the cone in the shot, I rather liked it:-

John English Dolben Esq, who on the death of his father became Sir John English Dolben, the fourth and last baronet and lord of the Monor of Finedon, erected this monument in 1789. An entry in his diary reads:

"This day I laid the first stone of the Finedon Obelisk at the Cross of Turnpikes East Town End. Sumpter of Irthlingborough, Mason , as a direction pillar & to record the many blessings of 1789"

The blessings of 1789 probably included George III's recovery from a period of insanity. The 23rd of April 1789 was officially appointed as a day of thanksgiving for this event, which Finedon celebrated with the ringing of bells, fireworks and the firing of a cannon.

Hence the title of the shot being "Return to Sanity". I just don't think we celebrate things as well now as they did in the 1700's.

I just like that they are a similar shape & maybe it's own return to sanity was it removing the cone from the top :cuckoo:

Right, must really do that ironing today and the housework. Then later will try to catch up with everyone's photo's.

I like the photo a lot...maybe if the cone was standing up, mimicking the obelisk?

I like this!..... I'm undecided on the cone... I think i like it

To be honest I'd agree about the cone. But I still quite like it. The one before it is excellent though, very imaginative!

Sam, I would have liked to have done that, but couldn't reach as it's in a fenced and locked area :(

Thank you, glad you like it.

It's been a bit of a busy week this week, both at work and home, we've been looking at moving (so very stressed!), but hoping to have time this evening to go through everyone's photo's. Also off to the toy shop sometime over the weekend to get some more toys :)

nice shot Sarah - love any monument like this and no we dont seem to celebrate as they did in times gone by
