weekly *Sarah* 2012 52 week challenge. Yippee I made it!!

Hi Sarah

absolutely love your #2 shot of the agate...beautiful colors , great sharpness & stunning detail...LOVE IT

The Mineral water & glass's was inspired thinking & really well shot..no crit at all...REALLY TOP WORK girlie :clap:

Dark - This little visitor flew into our lounge on Saturday night so I had to get a photo of it before it left!

Its a Swallow-tailed moth who you normally only see at night when its dark but they're attracted to lights as I found out when trying to get it to pose. I thought snails were awkward models!!:lol:

Hi Sarah

now that is lovely  Great focus & detail in the furry(?) bits , very well exposed , lovely image

If I were to be extrememly picky there's something a bit odd on the nearest winf , almost softness going up toward the top most part....may just be my eye's or monitor & it is being really really picky

...care to share your lighting technique ?

Thanks Lynne, the top of both the wings are slightly out of focus, I think that might be because it had its wings open a little bit, I used f22 but maybe should have gone further. DOF on macro is interesting to deal with!!:lol:

I used a speedlight with diffuser on held near the camera, I think it was on 1/4 or 1/8th power as well. I really wanted to get a shot of it with its wings open but as usual my models don't do what I ask very often!!:lol:

what a great shot! I'd be over the moon with a shot like that  well done :)

Like it. Nice detail and nice and sharp. Especially liking the detail in the 'fur'. Good catch.

Lynne mentioned the DOF issue, macro dof, indeed :bonk: Top of head looks a tad hot on my laptop. As I said in the TP52 thread, minor points but need mentioning.

Cheers.

really good capture you must of been out there a while but well worth it can't fault it

Cracking shot Sarah, spot on for me.

Thank you Michael, Andy and Allan. :)

Andy - I'll have a look again at the raw file and see if I can pull back the hot spot on its head - I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it.:)

Allan - I was lucky to be able to take the shots inside, it was fluttering around the lounge window so I brought a bit of an old rustic bird house in for it to perch on!:)

Hi Sarah.

Contrast is a wonderful shot; love it, nothing more to say!

For mineral, it's a toss up between the pebble, which I think you underrate, and the mineral water, which is very clever and very nicely taken. I'm going to vote foe the pebble though, if only because I think the bottles water industry should be banned as one of the all time greatest cons going!

I'll come back to dark when I've done mine.

The pebble gets my vote for mineral Sarah, but then I would say that wouldn't I?
Its a nice simple take on the theme but i particularly like the soft lighting you've used. It presents a lovely clean image to which your backstory and the sentimental value attached to the pebble only add to it. Lovely :)

Dark, its all been said above but a nice bit of macro work there on a very photogenic subject. Iain

So let me get this straight, you see this moth and quickly set everything up. Yes it's attracted to light but how did you persuade it to sit exactly where you wanted and how long did it pose for you? How long was your exposure?

I was going to ask did you happen to have a spare log knocking around for it to sit on?

It's another cracker Sarah:clap: I'd be happy to just catch it on camera let alone in focus!!!

Thank you Mark and Iain, I decided to go with the pebble shot for Mineral it's simplicity grew on me!!

Hi Marsha, I was very lucky with the moth, it was quite happy to sit there for a while eating from the bark. i'll have a look at my exif but I used flash so it would have been somewhere between 150 and 250th!

I've just read my previous post, god I asked a lot of questions:bonk:

Thats ok I'm used to lots of questions working in school!!:lol:

Hi Sarah

crikey...I struggle to keep hold of 1 watch  Like th pp & the idea & the frame , great focus as well on the watches throught the glass jar:clap:
The only little very wee niggle from me...I'd be tempted to crop 1/2 the space from the bottom....just to make it slightly less even top n bottom...which is odd for me cos it's the opposite of what my OCD would be saying normally

Hi Sarah

Contrast - Great colours, like the angles/lines created with the wires, real nice background too - Nice One

Mineral -
1) Not too bad, but agree bottom left a tad confusing/fuzzy
2) Ahhhh Bless, a good find that - Don't let Iain see it what ever you do :suspect:
3) Now your talking, excellent colours and textures, nice even focus too - Great Shot
4) Clever... very clever, I really like that a lot, well set up and great lighting again

Dark - Well, again well captured, can't see the exif but great dof acheived, and the detail is superb !!!!

Time - Nice One... liking the pp, great imagination and delivered in style

ooo I love that, most excellent  have to disagree with Lynne tho because I like the shadow from the jar at the bottom :p

really nice pic can't fault anything about it yet again love the grainy look. Thats a lot of watches you have

Bit late on comment for Dark, love the shot and lucky it posed long enough.
Time - great idea, cant fault it. By the way which one is right as I need to set my watch?

Hi, Sarah, Time, very nice. How do you have so many watches. I have an annoying habit of chucking anything that doesn't work or I replace out :bonk:

Great processing and the second submission, along with Iain, where central positioning works really well. Liking the processing.

If I could make on tiny crit, and I always try to with everyone, the long, thin strap, maybe blend it in a tad more?

Cheers.

Sorry it's brief - I'm lagging behind again! :(

Mineral - The water has it for me. Fabulous shot.
Dark - Really nicely executed. As others have said, love the "fur".
Time - Genius. Excellent execution, too. Love it!

These weeks are flying by at the moment. We've been away for the week so I havent had as much time to get this weeks shot. Peter and I went to the Yorkshire Sculpture park yesterday and while we had a rest sitting by the river I took a few macro shots. I'm not sure what this is but I think it's some sort of Hoverfly.
It was taken using a Nikon 105mm macro and SB600 flash off camera. I'm enjoying having a go at macro but it's very testing and frustrating!!:)

Now I know an insect doesn't have a body as such, (it's a thorax) for me and for this week its a body!!

Fantastic shot. Thanks for letting me borrow your kit but mine didn't turn out anywhere near as good as this. I love how you've captured the fly with the pollen attached.
