weekly *Sarah* 2012 52 week challenge. Yippee I made it!!

I couldn't get what I wanted this week but decided to try and get one of my sons to look moody! (shouldn't be difficult for a teenager!:lol:) I wanted a picture of him sat looking through a rainy window.

1 For once there was no rain so I resorted to the hosepipe
2 teenage son (George) found it funny to pull faces
3 George broke in to laughter encouraged by Peter
4 Tried bribery
5 Tried to threaten him by telling him I'd put pics up on facebook
6 Bingo!!!
7 The moody look at Peter before disappearing upstairs!!

So here is this weeks entry for Moody, I'm hoping to do a re shoot tomorrow!!:)

Brilliant. Perfectly moody, and I LOVE the PP!
 
PP is cracking here. Real moody and gritty feel to it. I did wonder what something off the right would result in.

Moody teenager...:D or is it :shake:

Thanks Andy, I've tried several different edits on this one and couldn't decide on the right hand side as well - I was worried about his hair merging into the background too much. I might have another look at tomorrow.

I meant to say on the original that it was taken at 3200 to help with the gritty feel.

I would like to add that no teenagers were harmed during this!!:lol::lol::lol:

Def moody but luckily eldest moody teenager (Thomas) has gone away for a few days so life will be a bit easier here!:)
 
Just for you Andy I've had a quick edit to try and improve the right side. I tried darkening the whole right side but it looked too much so I cloned some of the detail from the left side!

excellent I like a bit of grain can't understand people who worry about it, different take on the theme than most and alll the better for it :clap:

I've decided to go with the second pic. I havent used grain for a long time but back in the day when I used to use film I loved getting grainy shots!!:)
 
I've decided to do a re shoot as well this week. I havent been happy with my industry shot so have been waiting to re shoot it. I was lucky today to be able to assist in taking our school choir to Leeds College of Music to record a cd. My eldest son attends this college and was helping to record it! We went on a quick tour of the facilities and I was able to get a couple of grab shots. I had to use natural light which was poor so had to up the iso to 1000 so again this weeks shot is a little grainy!

Moody - like the idea a lot and you have captured it well. Probably #2 for me although the loss of that little bit of light to the right of the head has made it very dark. But the theme is captured completely by the pose, hair and very good PP:thumbs:

Industry reshoot - good shot but I would like to have seen a little more of the deck to the rear in focus. Good composition.

moody - thats what I was worried about - making too dark!:)

Industry - there wasn't much I could do about the dof on this one, I didnt have time to play as I was only in there for a very short time and was there to look after and photograph the children in my care. Even at iso 1000 I was struggling to get 1/50th at 3.5. I wasn't able to use flash on this occasion!:(

Understand entirely. At those extremes (iso 1000 1/50th at 3.5) I would have made a right hash of of it :D

Thanks Alex, it would be great to be able to go back with tripod etc and have a better go at it. It's their latest recording suite which cost a mini fortune, I believe the desk alone cost about 1/4 to 1/5 a million:eek::eek:.
i will have to work on Thomas's teachers to see if I can go back in!!

He may have gone away for a couple of days but we got a phonecall from him tonight on his way to A&E!:eek: He was put on penicillin and thought he was having a reaction to it - at least he phoned NHS direct and then got himself off to A&E. Panic is over and he's alright but I have a few more grey hairs!!:lol::lol: kids!!!!
 
I love symmetry, great shot :clap: moody is just the job too :) I like your industry shot because industry also says 'busy' to me and this is a 'busy' shot with all those knobs :) :)
 
Nice one for the industry shot from a very different era than the original all those weeks ago at a snowy mining museum. I like the angle plus the drop off of focus from front to back.

Thank you Peter, it seems such a long time ago that we went to the mining museum and took the other industry shot!:)
 
Here are my entries for Joy! As usual I'm not all that happy with them. The first one I took and when I started to process it I noticed the blue tone and couldn't work out where it had come from and then remembered that we forgot to turn the tv off!!:cuckoo: Had another go at some stupid time tonight, this time the colour is better but I don't like the angle as much and I can't bring back the brightness inside the candle holder without making it grey. If I get chance tomorrow I might try and reshoot but probably won't as this weeks theme hasn't really grabbed me and I'm running out of time! I look forward to hearing what you think!:)

Hi Sarah :)

I think subject-wise you've done wonderfully. A candle burning could hint to so many types of joy - romance and religion both jump to mind, as does the idea of a "light of hope" in the darkness - and it even has it spelt out, so that's fabulous.

Composition is strong too; simple but very effective. I prefer the angle in your first shot; I think it gives more interest to the candle holder, and also the light spill is more defined. The colour is better on the second though, as you say.

Photographing something that produces light is always hard to expose correctly. I think you need a little fill light on the holder itself - not much, mind - just so that you capture the texture. If you're careful and direct it at the holder rather than around it, it shouldn't affect your dark background too much. It looks like your TV is set up to do a pretty good job of it, have you got anything to put in that would make the screen white to get a clean colour?

Right... onto the shot

JOY - Liking both of them for different reasons, as Vicky has said I prefer the angle/composition of the first, and the colours of the light radiating off :thumbs:

BUT the brightness of the inside of the pot in shot 2 is very nice - Oooo what a tough choice !!!
 
I like the blue on no.1 but no.2 is so much better, put the TV back on :lol:
 
Two good shots and clever of you to have a pot with the theme on it.:thumbs:

I like the angle on #1 as it shows the cut out at the rear of the pot and i don't mind the colour - but for some reason the word is harder to read than on #2 - the two cut outs at the side seem to interfere with the word.

#2 is well lit - good dark background and nicely lit inside the pot. A squarish crop might suit also
 
Number 2, really well lit i like the ring of light around it :thumbs:
 
I also prefer the second one although my eye is drawn to the 'glare' at the front. Impossible to eliminate completely I imagine.
