weekly *Sarah* 2012 52 week challenge. Yippee I made it!!

I prefer no. 1 - London Pride - also a drink

Soft - The triptych works well but agree sign in too in your face. I would have preferred to see footprints reversed in the middle.
Pride - I prefer the drink but these are well shot with the back lighting really doing its job. Think the second shot could be improved with the background black as #1

I like number 1 best. The backlit hairs and the diagonal composition work extremely well. Great shot :)

Thanks for the comments summer, Mark and John!

Looking on my phone I hadn't noticed that number two's background wasn't as black, but still looks great to me:thumbs: Although I do prefer number one for the detail and lighting.

I know you said you used natural lighting but how did you get this shot? I cannot get a black background without losing detail in whatever it is I'm shooting! I end up needing to pp the background a bit. Can I ask what settings you have used here?

Love the back lighting too - I would also like to hear about your setup :)

Hi Marsha and Amanda,

The pics were taken on a table in the lounge. The lighting was from the sun coming through the window behind the plant. I used a torch to light up the centre of #2. I put some black material over the back of a chair and positioned a short way from the plant. I found when looking on the screen that there was a lot of flare coming from the window, I stopped this by holding my hand above the lens. I think it was about a 16 sec exosure on f22 but will try and check later. I think the black background stayed black as there was no light on it from the window from the angle it was positioned.

Hope this helps a bit, but I think there was a bit of luck involved as well!:)

Hi Sarah

great pair of images for Pride....like your take on the theme....#1 for me...fab totally black BG & lighting....

Looks like more skill than luck! Maybe you should go and buy a lottery ticket with that kind of luck :)

Thanks Lynne and Marsha, I look forward to seeing your shots with black backgrounds soon!

A bit of a rush job this week! I came up with the idea on Saturday but again spent Sunday in bed ill and then my tooth abscess that I got rid of 2 weeks ago came back again with a vengeance:(! I got in from work tonight and got these two shots tonight. Not my best by far but the best that I will get done this week! When I'm back to normal (whatever that is) I'll get round to catching up on all your threads but please bear with me it might be the weekend before I get chance.

Thanks for looking in!:)

Ah, good use of the theme Sarah and well taken

Nice. This take didn't even cross my mind

It's #2 for me...just a tad on the top.

Can I ask how you lit this one? I struggle in the area :help:

Cheers.

Thanks gramps and Andy.

It was lit using one bowens studio light with a softbox on. The light was positioned facing the subject and slighly to the right. To help with the shadows I placed some white material underneath the subject to help reflect some light back up. My lighting is very much a hit and miss afair but I'm hoping to learn lots when I go on the TP convention in a couple of weeks!

Hi Sarah...

Short...nicely done, thought I was the only short straw on here!!!!
then Andy said someone else had done short straw...
almost went for exactly the same take as you, but changed my mind last min:)

Nice bit of thinking again. I prefer the lighting of #1 which gives more saturated colours to the straws

Hi Sarah

good thinking for the theme & well lit...#2 for me , possibly boost the straw color a smidge ? Great shots though...well done on the lighting

Thanks all for your comments! I'll try and boost the colours on #2 over the weekend!:)

Some nice creative thinking there Sarah
My vote goes to #1, it looks like it has slightly more even light on it, particularly in the palm of the hand holding the straws.
I do prefer the hands position in #2 though

Posting more than one photograph gives us choices choices

Good work though, looking forward to tomorrows theme, is it Saturday yet?
Iain

Another one for #1 with the better hand position

Hi Sarah, such a simple idea for the:thumbs: I can't decide between the two, I like the lighting and straw colours in number one but the hand positions in number two:thinking:

I really hope you're better soon. Roll on the new theme and a healthy start to May!

Another one for #1 with the better hand position

Thank you all for your comments!:)

I think this is a first for me - putting some on on the first day!!:)

I normally think about what I want to take for a couple of days before taking but had this idea today so I've gone for it. I had hoped to get a shot outside but our lovely British weather put a stop to that today so back to the tabletop again!:)

Just had another look at these and theres a few things I'm not happy with so I will try and reshoot again later in the week.

Will have to go out dandelion picking again!!:suspect:

Hi Sarah, a first for me, getting in early. Great idea and my vote is #1. Very sharp and great composition. Also intrigued how you managed this shot.

sorry Sarah, i seem to have missed a few weeks.

Pride - very different idea, i had thought of the drink, but didn't know about the plant, the lighting and focus is really good on both, but i prefer the composition of 1.

Short - 1 for me as well the colours are really vibrant and i think this makes the shot.

Flight - again clever idea, i am also intriqued to know how you did this

excellent flight - one of my first thoughts, my dandelions are determined to be yellow tho - I love your shot, bg and lighting are spot on  I prefer the 1st one as the seeds on the head look as though they're precious gems :)

just off to do mine, trying something new lol

Brilliant and simple Sarah. Love them ;)

Liking the visual impact of number 1. Great idea and great pics.

Thank you Alby, Michael and Summer!:)

Ooo not what I was expecting at all, but brilliant idea for the theme:clap: The dandelion is beautiful and sharp, as are the seeds in flight:thumbs:

Yet again I have to ask how did you shoot this!

Thank you Marsha and John!:)

I think I need to take a pic of my set up! It was a similar set up to last time.
The dandelion was in a glass held still by a peg, I used one flash to the right and slightly above the subject but this time I used a softbox as well! I took a few shots of the dandelion to get the exposure right - I had to move the background further away as it wasn't coming out as black as I wanted. Then Peter "Delta Skies" kindly sat a blew the dandelions so I could try and get one in flight. It took a lot of shots to get these ones!:)

Next time I'll take a pic of the set up for you! (must remember to dust first first!)

Hi Sarah

a pair of great images for the Theme....well done for not only being quick off the mark but also for them being so darn good

Great focus & sharpness , prefer the crop of #1 for being closer

I did think about doing this for my shot but all the dandelioons round here have been flattened by the monsoon that is todays weather :bang:

Thanks Lynne, I rescued 3 dandelion clocks before the rain came, they're now sat in a glass on the fireplace!

excellent pics:clap: and funny enough I thought of dandilions too but now i have to go back to the drawing board.
No 1 for me by the way.

Ah, very clever! I was more after how you got them in flight, I would probably need to shoot 100 shots and then merge in PP! You've done very well here:thumbs:

I think merging in pp would have been easier!

I took over 70 to get these and I either missed the seeds or I couldnt get them sharp!

Sshhh - I had lots of luck on this one as one of the seeds was hanging from the clock so I thought I'd take advantage of the situation. Instead of blowing I used some card to waft the air which caused the other seeds to fall off more gently. I think they might have got caught by the other hanging seed which slowed them down a bit!!:)
