Sam Allardyce...

Did you watch it?

If that's your idea of not too bad you are obviously easily pleased, first shot came in the 59th minute, it was dire

And Southgate is so much better... 2-0 against Malta and a dire game, this one is no better.

Totally agree, apart from the keeper it was terrible, only got home for the second half, but don't think I missed much.

Just have to accept from a playing and managerial aspect we are in the second tier of international football. Bit like teams in the premier who won't go down, but can't win it either, madness to keep setting unrealistic expectations that adds undue pressure on all concerned.

But teams like Leicester have proved that you can do it, and look at Wales in the euros, even Portugal who you would never claim to be better than France or Germany for example.

Leicester was a once in a lifetime achievement, Wales were soundly beaten in a semi final of a widely accepted competition of poor quality. Portugal didn't beat Germany and were very fortunate against France in the final.
We have consistently failed at every single tournament beginning in 1970, I have had the misfortune to witness them all and since 1990 and 1996 it's been a steady decline to where we are now.

Germany went through a period when they were very poor, accepted it and completely rebuilt their game from youth to senior club level. Until we do something similar we will continue on our present mediocre path. We are similar to Arsenal at club level where success is qualifying from the group stage of a european tournament with seemingly no idea of how to progress further or win it.

I would suggest that England at international level are quite a few rungs below Arsenal playing in the Premier league. I am not even an Arsenal supporter, but they do share the record for FA cup wins - 12 - and they last won the FA cup in 2015.
I would currently put England at bottom half of the Championship.

That's why I mentioned "group stage and european tournament" although your championship comparison sounds reasonable

Glorious failure is exactly that, losing by any other name and something we have been rather good at apart from one success fifty years ago.

It isn't just the losing, it is the sheer mediocrity of the team performances.
The last time I can remember an England team playing really well, was ironically the qualifying matches for the last Euros, where Roy had managed to get a group of players working in harmony. Then in the actual competition, it was as though someone flicked a switch and they performed like park players. I cannot watch the side to side passing in their own half, where every player seems to need two touches to control the ball.
The most frustrating aspect of the situation, is that the players are very skillful for their own clubs.
