Quick quick....

I'm off to Amsterdam(age) this weekend, so yesterday, I took a trip to my local Natwest to order some currency (I am a Natwest account holder at another branch). I asked for £150 worth, to which she said 'it'll be £145.57, for 160 Euros, is that OK. I said yes and she said OK, that'll come out of your account immediately, you can collect them tomorrow, ie today.

I've since spotted that Natwest's rate is 1.09 which is way below the going rate for Euro's - the post office are 0.03 Euro's better at 1.12 or 4 Euros for the transaction in question. Now I know it ain't a big difference, but where do I stand with regards to asking for a refund, as I feel I'm being ripped off, even if just a little??:D

I don't think you have any chance really - you were free to shop around, she told you the price, you could have checked the rate etc

L

also, what is the difference between that and buying, say, a toaster, and then seeing it for a fiver less in Argos?

L

If I'd bought it from Argos, I could probably take it back within 30 days??

She told you the exchange rate, you accepted it... done deal I think.
I can understand your feelings of course, I'd be the same, but I doubt that you've any grounds under consumer legislation to back out of it. On the positive side at least you'll know to do a bit more research *beforehand* next time. So maybe for 4 euro difference it's quite a cheap lesson really!

as lois said...
that's not the sale of goods act.

you're looking for a price promise, or price guarantee offered by the retailer.

the sale of goods act is law not whim

after you have taken the money back, got it from somewhere else and wasted your shoeleather why is that worth more than £3.60!?
look down the back of your sofa to recoup the loss and research things better next time would be my advice...

and have a good time in Amsterdam!

£3.60 is better in my pocket than Nat West's!! :D It's more a principle thing though (and Natwest have been messing me about for years!)

OK then Currys or whatever. Do the bank say that they offer a price match policy? If they do, you have a case, if they don't then I fail to see the problem

L

so why use them in the first place then?

Some years ago in my student days, after being treated like a 2nd class citizen for some time, they bribed me with £250 worth of HMV vouchers and a free rail card, after I threatened to take my business elsewhere!! :D

With respect, perhaps you should have done some research first in that case to establish as to who had the better rate.

You can't blame the bank for having a different rate to someone else after you've decided to use them simply because you didn't check beforehand. Besides, banks are notoriously bad when it comes to fx rates.

Strictly speaking, she told me what I would get for £145.47, not the actual exchange rate.

Banks are the same as politicians... It's not *what* they tell you, it's what they *don't* tell you that matters. So although I believe your version of events I'm sure that they would argue that you had the information necessary to work out the actual exchange rate should you wish to do so.

Bottom line... never trust either banks or politicians

cheers

As a 'valued customer', perhaps I was expecting too much to be not to be treated like the mug I obviously am!! :D

I think I'll have a whinge anyway when I head over to collect my cash- you never know what might happen eh??? :D

No one treated you like a mug, they offered you currency at their going rate. I really don't see what the problem is (other than you didn't do any research)

Those are the terms of the contract which you agreed to.

Steve.

When I bought euros earlier in the year I found NatWest cheaper than the Post Office. If I recall correctly, the PO stuff on an extra commission charge or whatever. You may not be making a fair comparison.

You asked what the legal position is, not the moral one! ;)

The law won't intervene to save from what is, with the benefit of hindsight, a bad bargain. Can't see Natwest being too accommodating on a goodwill basis either, but it never hurts to chance your arm and ask....

They wont give you a refund (well highly doubt i know in my local branch they wont) as you are free to shop around, and there is no obligation to buy from them.
They dont offer price match either.

If you'd as put as much effort into shopping around as you have in this thread, couldn't this have been avoided?

when I went to the US in 2007 M&S were giving a better rate than all the banks

if you have an adgold account you shoulda phoned up n got preferential rates and delivery to home :p

Smart arses the lot of you!!! :D I have taken down all of your names, and will endeavour to make you look as daft as me on future threads!! :D :D
