Sat down last night and went through my camera bag charging batteries and sorting cards out etc. and got the manuals out for a read (before I go for a play today) for the 40D and the 1D - there is a big difference between them!
The 1D manual has a physically bigger page size, font you can read and explains clearly each function and what it does
The 40D manual has smaller pages, font that needs a magnifying glass to read, and although it explains each function its not a clearly written.
Considering the fact that the 40D is aimed at non pros and the 1D is aimed at the pro market it seems they have either explained things better for the pro user who (theoretically) should know more and not need the explanation, or they have in the intervening years "progressed" to smaller less user friendly manuals that assume the user has more of an understanding (and better eyes) than I had when I started using a DSLR!!
Going by the manuals it would almost have been easier for me to use the 1D as a first camera than the 40D
