Sat down last night and went through my camera bag charging batteries and sorting cards out etc. and got the manuals out for a read (before I go for a play today) for the 40D and the 1D - there is a big difference between them!
The 1D manual has a physically bigger page size, font you can read and explains clearly each function and what it does

The 40D manual has smaller pages, font that needs a magnifying glass to read, and although it explains each function its not a clearly written.

Considering the fact that the 40D is aimed at non pros and the 1D is aimed at the pro market it seems they have either explained things better for the pro user who (theoretically) should know more and not need the explanation, or they have in the intervening years "progressed" to smaller less user friendly manuals that assume the user has more of an understanding (and better eyes) than I had when I started using a DSLR!!
Going by the manuals it would almost have been easier for me to use the 1D as a first camera than the 40D

One tip I picked up somewhere was to down load the PDF manuals and print them A4 as this makes them so much eaiser to read for us poor old folk with bad eyes ;)

Interesting to see an appraisal from the fairer sex. I suffer a problem, no doubt shared by many here, that testosterone positively prevents recourse to "manual reading"
.....I'm a man, I can figure these things out myself.

It's only when the frustration level (:bang:) climbs above the testosterone level that I'll even begin to search for the manual, let alone actually read it. :shake:

But if I read the manual the coffee table will become unsteady.

Just do what everyone else does, forget about the manual and post every question you have about the camera here on TP- so we can tell you.........

to RTFM  :exit:

What is this manual you speak of?

:D:D:D

Someone always has to take all the fun out of it and produce a bl**dy manual!!

PMSL, you lot are nutters!!

Its all down to people on here saying you should use the manual setting so I looked at the manual to find out what setting it wanted me to use :rules:

At least I knew where they were though (not propping the table up) and (being female) I am happy to read them (sometimes ;)), it has not improved my photography but at least I understand a bit more about the cameras and what they can do, plus what I read on here from you all makes more sense so I think long term its worth it :lol:

Yeah Slapo but us blokes will never be able to find the PDF again!

I'll take a paper copy over a pdf every time - am i going to take the damm computer to the loo every time i want to find some info - yep i read the manual when having a poo

Does that mean you have to 'use' 2 pages whereas one was absorbent enough before?
