Yes
why should the wedding photographers have all the fun/arguments great big long pointless threads

what hacks me of is when you are told yes there is a photo pass,no there is no need keep asking me they know you are coming.
then you arrive at the venue and they just think you are a blagger and theres no pass.

but my biggest hate is people calling themselves photographers putting massive water marks over complete dross.
you know out of focus, mike stand in the face, complete garbage then they put them on face book and people say wow great shots :bang:

so whats your gripe

Folk who go to venues where photography is fine... only to be an ass by standing in front of everyone through the entire show, get in the artists faces and use flash lots.

Way to make sure a venue restricts photography :bang:

Teenage girls with thier d40 and pop up flash getting completely in the way in the pit, standing starstruck staring the performance when I'm trying to get the shots..
Be a photographer or get in the crowd and watch.. Don't do both.

mike stands , forgetting my earplugs and having to stand in front of huge speakers on full blast, bands who loooove your shots but wouldn't think of paying for any for themselves , some little **** ant irish outfit that accidently tried to knock a drink over me once due to their frustration of hardly anybody turning up for their gig one night, the constantly changing lighting, that bloody irish band again, arguments with my bird because i spend nearly every weekend out in clubs shooting bands when i should be in the house with her, snobs in the pit who look down their noses at me because ive got a ***** camera, having to get up for work at 6.30 when i roll in at 4am, editing a weekends worth of pics in lightroom due to the afor mentioned constantly changing lights, gangs of drunk girls in the crowd asking for me to take their pic....nah forget it i love it all....

well except that irish band

Rights grabs- mainly by frigging idiotic PRs or (tour) managers.

PS....I'm 14 and don't use flash ;)

All of the above...

Good work and access Tiegan, you're clearly not one of the stereotype :) keep shooting! Lostprophets are on my bucket list to shoot, so fun live, and you got a great shot. Jealous!

why isnt this degenerating like a wedding thread are we that much better behaved?

Ultrasound last night and they where very good.

its quite nice photographing bands when your photos are on display all around the room and people at the end of the gig are discussing them.

Because the worlds not full of cocky arses that think you're doing something 'anybody' could do and making fortunes doing it.
It's not the wedding photographers that pull down wedding threads.

Like I said, watch from the crowd or be a photographer.. You are clearly the latter, which is fine.

That's all fine and dandy, but what about those of us who have an interest in photography, and would like a memento of our night out at some gig?

You're saying I shouldn't have taken this!?

Were you stood in the pit in someone elses way who is trying to earn a living?

Only having the first 3 with no flash and getting no light. Then song 4 it's like they found the light switch.

Any release is usually a joke.

Getting 3 and as you leave seeing someone in the front row shooting the whole show with flash.

Getting pulled out after 2 songs by security who can't count.

Pits full of people who should;t be there. The worst example of this was a (big) festival show where because of the number of shooters they restricted it to one song each group. There were people from the first group passing their pass back to their friends so they could go in with their P&S and get a "Cool" shot of the headliner.

PR people treating you like crap.

I could go on. Still love it though

This!

Ok, here goes.
Passes, they're just emty promises.
Payment, whats that????
Flashes, thanks, one in 3 photos ruined by hoards of people who somehow have the need to use strobing pre-flash.
Mic stands, essential i know, but a PITA anyhow.
Music stands, if you need them-go home.
Red lights, lighting guys hate photographers.
First 3, cool, the bands come to life on the 4th song.
Hair pulling, not much left now.
Jeeze, i could go on, but thinkng about it makes me want to go and hit the JD.

No I wasn't. There wasn't a pit, and the only 'professional' photographer I saw was in the aisles about 15 rows back from the stage with what looked like a 70-200 attached to his camera.

i could be cruel and say i can see you are a wedding photographer :)

Say what you like. I have shot "bands" I have shot weddings, I have shot bands at weddings... the thing with weddings is that pretty much we start the day with the same kit that we end the day with, and have to cope with anything thrown at us, so we need to be reasonably good all rounders. So for those little specialisims - bands, landscapes, light painting, fireworks.. we need to be able to get the shots in the bag and do a fairly good job at captiuting the atmosphere. we however may not excel at them

What do you think of the first picture you uploaded, how would you rate it,critique it?

Ie.mic stands,exposure,composition etc.

I get my gripe from those that don,t understand the event they are photographying...
I photograph many Rock 'n' Roll events, when I say R n R, it's true 50s R n R, not this modern pop stuff people seem to confuse with true R n R...

I think it's the NOT making fortunes part that keeps it fairly civil :D at least outside of the pit.

Neither are we?
My comment was about what people think we do:suspect:

My gripes are many.

The need to watermark images, I've tried not to but it very quickly became a problem and I've had to start doing it again. Though only a small thing in the corner. I don't mind helping small unsigned bands get ahead/look better with my images, but signed acts should know better.

Rights grabs send me into a blind red rage, the nerve of the management! if only the bands knew this was going on.

Static bands that never move, or singers that never move from the mic stands. Sure we can gripe about shots with the mic stand in the face, but sometimes that's all you're going to get. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

My biggest gripe is having to take 3-4 years out of it due to the recession. I started at the same time as, and look where he is now! ah well :D

Lack of courtesy, I always walk round behind other photographers, or the new scurge, the videographers with their iPhones and DSLR's but for some reason they are so dim they cant offer me the same courtesy.

Why you morons... ??? I dont walk in front of you.. dont walk in front of my shots.

Thought for others... been to two gigs recently when a pro photographer has stuck reflector dishes up either side of the stage which means every other photographer in the venue has his dishes in the background of their shots, so that greatly limits angles and stuff for everyone else, or means they've got a load of post processing to remove them afterwards.

DSC_2964.jpg

Wedding photographers who think they are gig photographers.... been to a couple of gigs recently where there have been 'professional' photographers there and they approach a gig like they would a wedding or a studio shoot.

It annoyed me so much I spoke to one guy afterwards and asked him if he'd ever been to a garage and watched someone mig welding and when he replied 'No' I said well try it for a couple of hours and then you'll get some idea how my nights been.

Everyones eyes are on F1.8 because of the low light, to then flash a high power pro flash unit in peoples faces is just offensive.

So get your fast primes out, wind up your iso and leave your flashes at home.

I saw one guy had turned his flash round to try and use a poster behind him as some sort of reflector dish to soften the flash.... but had given no thought to the couple stood behind him who were getting his flash full in their face. Shame people were too polite to say anything.

In gig photography, like street photography you have NO control over subject, lighting and often where you can stand. All you have is your eye, to be able to capture a moment and thats what makes it a skill and so rewarding when you catch 'the shot' of the night. You have to work with what you've got, poor lighting, layout of equipment on the stage, lively crowds thats all part of it. Every night is different if you cant deal with that lack of control then gig photography is not for you, stick to weddings and studio work

Gig photography has no perceived value. That really winds me up, you make some unsigned weeners look like rock gods and they wouldnt even give you a fiver for a print. Parents of said weeners who's little darlings have just fumbled their way through their first gigs, you've made them look epic and they wont even spend a fiver to own a moment in their childs life.

3 song rule... thats rubbish... so I only ever shoot small independant venues.

Hang on.... why am I doing this stuff again ?????? Oh yeah I love music, love photography and I get into gigs for free.....

I feel your pain..... :D

I photographed a tribute band the other day, gots lots of shots with my 70-200 and most on my 17-55 from being immediately in front of the stage, in the crowd a few yards back or ON the stage - I couldn't believe how easy it was to shoot a gig, and on my 'vast' experience I have no idea what the OP is whinging about :D

And yes - I am a Wedding Photographer, so bring on the argument

I've lost count of the number of inconsiderate (or plain stupid) photographers I've had to have quick words with at gigs over the years and this is a prime example of stupidity!

Mmm,I've seen Nick Cave a couple of times and he used a music stand:thinking:
You can tell him to go home if you like:boxer::lol:

I was actually going to comment on the music stands thing. "Look, I don't care if you are the London Philharmonic, GO HOME!"

Lets see the fibre of your fabric....... and we'll be the judge of how easy it was..... ;);)

Guys who turn up to a venue with tripod, large camera bag or rucksack and then spend half the night trying to watch all this gear they've brought with them in case any one has it away. or in the case of rucksacks bumping it in to everyone as they push through the crowd.

You dont need to take every piece of equipment you own everywhere with you !!!!!

damn !I did this with a wall once, just to add some light into the venue and thought that I was being clever!!! bah!
I was on a stairwell up the side to the balcony area and no-one was behind me so I did't hit anyone in the face with it

years ago now tbh

It wasnt the technique I had a problem with.. it was just his total lack of consideration for others. ie the poor people behind him trying to enjoy a gig, that they'd paid to see being ruined by selfish idiot.

Chimpers... I believe thats the phrase... people who check every shot after taking it then frantically delete stuff and fiddle with their cameras.

Just check your settings in the first few numbers, the just shoot away, gigs, by enlarge are fast moving affairs you never know what you'll miss fiddling with kit

At a recent gig there were three photographers there, me and two others, the two other guys got to fiddling with kit and totally missed a young lady on someones shoulders flip her top up and flash her boobs to the guitarist.....

And if you are deleting to make more space.. buy a bigger card !

Ha ha. Re: music stands, we all think it, I'm just sayin it.

Had a band come up to me the other night whilst I was photographing in what was really just a pub with no lighting, and ask if I could make it look like they were playing a huge venue.
My photoshop skills are ok, but I'm no good a cgi. Lol.

Dean.

Fair to say bands can be pretty stupid as well!

I once had a bass player ask me if I could give him "the John Patitucci sound", I simply replied "only if you play and sound like John Patitucci on stage". Needless to say he didn't sound anything like John Patitucci. :cuckoo:
