Lack of courtesy, I always walk round behind other photographers, or the new scurge, the videographers with their iPhones and DSLR's but for some reason they are so dim they cant offer me the same courtesy.
Why you morons... ??? I dont walk in front of you.. dont walk in front of my shots.
Thought for others... been to two gigs recently when a pro photographer has stuck reflector dishes up either side of the stage which means every other photographer in the venue has his dishes in the background of their shots, so that greatly limits angles and stuff for everyone else, or means they've got a load of post processing to remove them afterwards.
Wedding photographers who think they are gig photographers.... been to a couple of gigs recently where there have been 'professional' photographers there and they approach a gig like they would a wedding or a studio shoot.
It annoyed me so much I spoke to one guy afterwards and asked him if he'd ever been to a garage and watched someone mig welding and when he replied 'No' I said well try it for a couple of hours and then you'll get some idea how my nights been.
Everyones eyes are on F1.8 because of the low light, to then flash a high power pro flash unit in peoples faces is just offensive.
So get your fast primes out, wind up your iso and leave your flashes at home.
I saw one guy had turned his flash round to try and use a poster behind him as some sort of reflector dish to soften the flash.... but had given no thought to the couple stood behind him who were getting his flash full in their face. Shame people were too polite to say anything.
In gig photography, like street photography you have NO control over subject, lighting and often where you can stand. All you have is your eye, to be able to capture a moment and thats what makes it a skill and so rewarding when you catch 'the shot' of the night. You have to work with what you've got, poor lighting, layout of equipment on the stage, lively crowds thats all part of it. Every night is different if you cant deal with that lack of control then gig photography is not for you, stick to weddings and studio work
Gig photography has no perceived value. That really winds me up, you make some unsigned weeners look like rock gods and they wouldnt even give you a fiver for a print. Parents of said weeners who's little darlings have just fumbled their way through their first gigs, you've made them look epic and they wont even spend a fiver to own a moment in their childs life.
3 song rule... thats rubbish... so I only ever shoot small independant venues.
Hang on.... why am I doing this stuff again ?????? Oh yeah I love music, love photography and I get into gigs for free.....
